Consideration on design procedure of room-and-pillar underground structure part I: parametric study (주방식 지하구조물의 설계 방법 고찰 Part I: 매개변수 연구)

  • In this study, in order to suggest the design method for supports in the room-and-pillar underground structure, the case study was carried out. In the case study, shape of rock pillar and room was mainly considered. From the analysis, a displacement at the roof, the maximum principle stress and plastic state were examined. To optimize variables in the case study, cases from the Seoul metro station were analyzed, then a target depth of the underground structure and ground conditions were determined. And the height of rock pillar and room were chosen from the assumed purpose of underground space, i.e. living/office and warehouse. Total cases of analysis was 180 cases including 3 types of ground condition, 5 types of rock pillar and 6 types of roof span. It is expected that results from analysis can be used to determine the installation of support in room-and-pillar underground structure with stability, utilization efficiency of underground space and applicability of vehicles.

A Study on the Applicability of Acrylic Water Leak Repair Materials used to Repair Cracks in Conduits and Underground Structures (관거 및 지하구조물 균열 보수에 사용되는 아크릴 누수 보수재의 적용성에 대한 연구)

  • Various injection materials, such as asphalt-based injection materials, urethane-based injection materials, cement- based injection materials, and acrylic-based injection materials, are used for the repair of aged conduits and underground structures with cracks. In this study, research was conducted on an environmentally friendly acrylic- based leak repair material that exhibits good curing properties even in humid conditions and stability in temperature fluctuations. To compare the performance of the improved acrylic leak repair material with the existing acrylate injection material, experiments were conducted using KS standard methods, including underwater length change rate tests, underwater leakage resistance tests, and chemical performance tests. The comparative experiments revealed that the improved acrylic leak repair material showed no changes in shrinkage due to humidity, temperature variations, or chemical reactions compared to the existing acrylate injection material. In the underwater resistance test, the improved acrylic leak repair material did not show any leakage. Additionally, to assess the environmental impact of the improved acrylic leak repair material, acute fish toxicity tests and acute oral toxicity tests were conducted, and the results showed no mortality and no specific concerns with the test specimens. The experimental results led to the conclusion that the improved acrylic leak repair material is considered to be superior in performance, environmentally safe, and harmless to the human body. Based on various experimental results, it is inferred that the improved acrylic leak repair material is suitable for use as a repair material for cracks in manholes and underground structures compared to the existing acrylate repair material. This study aims to propose valuable data for future technological development by evaluating the applicability of acrylic leak repair materials.

Strengthening of shear resistance of masonry walls (조적벽체의 전단강도 향상 방안에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents an experimental study to investigate enhanced performance of the masonry walls strengthened in shear and ductility using honeycomb steel mesh. The performance of masonry walls strengthened with steel mesh will compare with unreinforced masonry walls to show the performance of reinforced masonry walls. According to the experiment, it is expected that this system is effective to enhance the shear strength and ductility of the masonry walls.

  • In Korea, under the influence of the jurisdiction, usage of radioisotopes are limited. The limitation is $100[{\mu}Ci]$ or less. Therefore, in this study, basic data were designed, and the following data are needed in order to improve content measuring instrument which is suitable for radioisotopes limitation. Owing to the source and detector's properties, measuring instrument was designed geometrically, neutron and photon's particle transportation was analysed by using the MCNP code which is in Monte Carlo Method, also the location of source and detectors, geometrical structure of neutron absorber and moderator was designed.

  • Development of structures such as slope and tunnel, waste disposal, oil and LPG storages, and underground power house and so on, is increasing with the year. The method for appropriate estimation of rock state such as fresh or damaged rocks is also requested with increasing structural development. On these purposes, seismic logging system, which is a simple and easy way for handling as well as small and light, has been developed. Seismic logging method is one of logging tests, which is able to evaluate the state of rock mass with various shapes and is possible to obtain the relatively accuracy data at situ state. In addition, seismic logging method is at to apply to estimate structural behavior, before and after support installed. According to the results obtained from this study, firstly, it is clear that the extent of damage in rock slope due to blasting is able to be evaluated with quantity using seismic logging method, moreover to decide the damage zone in rock slope reasonably. Secondly, it is expected that installing depth of support is able to be decided more effectively and economically, using the results of seismic logging data. Finally, seismic logging method is also able to be applied safety supervision of structures, before and after support installed.

The Preconsideration of Kiln for Firing Soft Stoneware in the Yeongnam Province in the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period (영남지방 원삼국시대의 토기가마구조에 대한 예찰)

  • Since three has never been any incidence of having investigated kilns for firing soft stoneware in the proto-three kingdoms period so far, how they structured by reviewing historic literature and material was preconsidered in this study. It is presumed that after both Gimhae Daeseongdong-type and Sacheon Bonggyeri-type kilns for firing earthenware coexist early, through an internal alteration process which is mutually complex and momentous, the floor of plastic room has been flattened or slanted and expanded little by little into the closed-kiln structure. It seems that the structure of kilns for firing soft stoneware was a horizontal combustion type(水平燃燒式) and its plane shape was close to being rectangular in shape unlike that of kilns for firing stoneware found in Honam and Hoseo province in the period of (proto-) three kingdoms. On the other hand, it is likely that the horizontal combustion type structure of kilns for firing stoneware excavated in Samyong-ri, Jincheon preceded the vertical combustion type(垂直燃燒式)that of kilns for firing stonewere found in Sansu-ri. In addition, the term, monumeut for firing earthenware must be changed to kiln for firing earthenware and the terms of Pyeungyo(平窯) and Dyengyo(登窯) can be applied to kilns for firing tiles. Thus, it does not seem likely that the absolute equality that Wajil earthenware(soft stoneware) pottery is Pyeungyo and stoneware pottery is Dyeungyo is applied in all cases.

Identification of Quaternary Faults and shallow gas pockets through high-resolution reprocessing in the East Sea, Korea (탄성파 자료 고해상도 재처리를 통한 동해해역의 제4기 단층 및 천부 가스 인지)

  • High-resolution images are drawn from existing seismic data which were originally obtained by Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI) during 1994-1997 for deep seismic studies on the East Sea of Korea. These images are analyzed for mapping Quaternary faults and near-bottom gas pockets. First 12 channels are selected from shot gathers for reprocessing. The processing sequence adopted for high-resolution seismic images comprises data copy, trace editing, true amplitude recovery, common-midpoint sorting, initial muting, prestack deconvolution, bandpass filtering, stacking, highpass filtering, poststack deconvolution, f-x migration, and automatic gain control (AGC). Among these processing steps, predictive deconvolution, highpass filtering, and short window AGC are the most significant in enhancement of resolution. More than 200 Quaternanry faults are interpreted on the migrated sections in the shallow depths beneath the seafloor. Although numerous faults are found mostly at the western continental slope and boundaries of the Ulleung Basin, significant amount of the faults are also indicated within the basin. Many of these faults are believed to be formed with reactivation of basement, from geotectonic activities including volcanism, and often originated in Tertiary, indicating that the tectonic regime of the East Sea might be unstable. Existence of shallow gas pockets casts real hazardous warnings to deep-sea drillings and/or to underwater constructions such as inter-island cables and gas pipelines. On the other hand, discovery of these gas pockets heightens the interests in developing natural resources in the East Sea. Reprocessed seismic sections, however, show no typical seismic characteristics for gas hydrates such as bottom-simulating reflectors in the western continental slope and ocean floor.

  • The objective of sensitivity analyses is to identify critical variables of structural models and how their variability impacts mechanical response results. The sensitivity analyses have been used as significant basis data for practical applications of measuring and reinforcing fragile building structures. This study presents several sensitivity analysis methods for topological optimum designs of linear elastostatic structural systems. Numerical examples for structural analyses and topological optimum modeling demonstrate the reliability of sensitivities formulated in the present study.

A Scientific Analysis of Pigments for A Scroll Painting in Daeungjeon Hall of Bulguk Temple (불국사 대웅전 석가모니후불탱화 안료의 과학적 분석)

  • Pigments used paintings, ornaments, weapons and various objects have been recognised as important elements to ascertain the history, manufacturing technique and cultural migration. Since the understanding of composition of pigments by analysis began in 1963, its technique and methodology has much advanced in recent years; recent study used the portable X-ray Fluorescence as non-destructive analysis has been practiced in particular. However the study on pigments necessitates overall and systematic research because it is difficult to understand periodical and regional use of pigments. by fractional studies. Therefore this research investigates the coloring materials and painting techniques of the scroll painting depicting preaching scene of Sakyamuni Buddha in Daeungjeon Hall, a main hall of Bulguk temple, through scientific analysis and comparison of various pigments which had been applied to the buddhist paintings of Joseon Dynasty. Consequently, it is confirmed that the scroll painting used pigments of white lead[$2PbCO_3{\cdot}Pb(OH)_2$] for ground layer and used mixture of different pigments such as cinnabar (HgS) minium($Pb_3O_4$) malachite($2CuO{\cdot}CO_2{\cdot}H_2O$) hematite($Fe_2O_3$) gold(Ag) for presenting various colors on the painting layer. It has been also believed that mineral pigments were applied to the scroll painting, yet it is difficult to confirm whether it is natural or synthetic pigments because the crystal structures of pigments were not analyzed. The results of this study, however, provide useful reference data for the understanding of the components of pigments and manufacturing techniques of buddhist scroll paintings, in particular, of Joseon Dynasty.

Prediction Model of Remaining Service Life of Concrete for Irrigation Structures by Measuring Carbonation (중성화 측정을 통한 콘크리트의 잔존수명 예측 모델)

  • Recently, the researches on the durability design of concrete structures have been studied. As the examples, models to evaluate the service life prediction of the structure have been developed. The purpose of this article is to develop the model for predicting remaining service life. The final aim is to provide the user time for repairing the concrete structures. In addition, it makes possible to maintain the concrete structure economically. 70 reservoirs out of the inland concrete structures were selected and concrete structures of their components were surveyed. Two methods were used for measuring carbonation; TG/DTA method and Phenolphtalein indicator and, the value of pH was measured by the pH meter, After deriving correlations of calcium carbonate and used year, duration from completion year to 2002, pH value, and concrete cover depth the model was developed for predicting remaining service life by measuring data as small as possible. The conventional models had been developed on the basis of experiment data obtained from the restricted lab environment like as carbon gas exposure. On the other hand this model was developed on the basis of measuring data obtained from the real field that the complex deterioration actions are occurred such as freezing and thawing, carbonation, steel corrosion, and so on. The reliability of the developed model will be evaluated high in this point and this model can help to maintain concrete structures economically by providing the manager time to repair the deteriorated concrete structures in site of facility management.
