This paper describes the re-design and the calibration results of the MAG digital circuit onboard the KSR-3. We enhanced the sampling rate of magnetometer data. Also, we reduced noise and increased authoritativeness of data. We could confirm that AIM resolution was decreased less than InT of analog calibration by a digital calibration of magnetometer. Therefore, we used numerical-program to correct this problem. As a result, we could calculate correction and error of data. These corrections will be applied to magnetometer data after the launch of KSR-3.
Magnetic method is rapid, cheap and simple geophysical exploration technique, and has wide range of applications such as resources prospecting, geological structure investigation and even geotechnical and environmental problems. Especially, aeromagnetics gives fundamental and useful geoscientific data fnr not only assessment of potential resources, but also national land planning. Magnetic method, perhaps the oldest geophysical technique, was relatively early introduced into Korea. Documents during Japanese occupation says that magnetic method was used for exploring metallic ore deposits and hot spring, and that a geomagnetic observatory was operated. From mid 1950's, after Korean War, magnetic explorations for natural resources such as metallic ore, uranium, coal, and groundwater were intensively executed for industrialization. Apache aeromagnetic survey project during $1958{\sim}1959$ and its ground follow-up surveys are typical and important cases in those days. Magnetic survey techniques were rapidly advanced during 1970's and 1980's with improvements of instruments, growth of geophysical manpower, and availability of computers. The national aeromagnetic mapping project by KIGAM in 1981 showed the improved technical capability of those days. Decline of mining industry since mid 1980's moved the exploration objects from traditional resources to new ones such as groundwater and geothermal resources, and applications to investigation of geological structure were revived. Recently appeared applications such as natural hazard assessment, and engineering and environmental studies increased the magnetic method's utility in the realm of exploration.
Using airborne magnetic data, magnetic characteristics were studied at the Samryangjin caldera area developed in the volcanics of the Yuchon sub-basin, the south eastern part of the Gyeongsang basin. Residual magnetics, reduction to the pole, horizontal derivative, and vertical derivative maps are prepared. Using these maps, the magnetic lithofaces are zoned and the geological structures such as caldera and faults were qualitatively interpreted. In addition, the two quantitative interpretations were performed. Firstly, the forward modelling were done to the 14.5 line km crossing the caldera area to the northeast-southwest direction. Applying the 3-D Euler deconvolution method to the whole study area, the depth extent and the characteristics of the magnetic anomalous bodies were studied. According to the results, the magnetic lithofaces of the area are zoned by 4 units. In general, these are well matched with the geological distributions. But the biotite granites intruded in the northern boundary of the Samryangjin caldera show the high magnetic intensity, while the biotite granites of the other areas show the low magnetic intensity and the different magnetic lithofaces. Thus, we interpreted that the biotite granites are closely related with the volcanic activity of the Samryngjin caldera, and are intruded in the fracture zones developed along the caldera rim. The Samryangjin caldera and fault structures of the area can be easily recognized by the distinct magnetic structures from the various magnetic anomaly maps. Also the topographic characteristics well reflect these structures. The results of the forward modelling show that the magnetic basement depth of the Gyeongsang sedimentary basin is on the average about 6 km and in maximum 10 km. And the depth becomes shallower toward the caldera boundary due to the shallow intrusion of the volcanics. The results of the 3-D Euler method also show the caldera and fault structures. And the relatively shallow magnetic anomalous bodies which are related with the volcanics are generally developed to the east-west and northeast directions, while the deep magnetic anomalous bodies to the northwest direction.
We conducted magnetic survey using IBRV (Ice Breaker Research Vessel) ARAON of KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute), ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) of Oceaneering Co. and three components vector magnetometer, at Apr., 2011 in the western slope of the caldera of TA25 seamount, the Lau Basin, the southwestern Pacific. The depth ranges of the survey area are from about 900 m to 1200 m, below sea level. For the deep sea magnetic survey, we made the nation's first small deep sea three components magnetometer of Korea. The magnetometer sensor and the data logger was attached with the upper part and lower part of ROV, respectively. ROV followed the planning tracks at 25 ~ 30 m above seafloor using the altimeter and USBL (Ultra Short Base Line) of ROV. The three components magnetometer measured the X (North), Y (East) and Z (Vertical) vector components of the magnetic field of the survey area. A motion sensor provided us the data of pitch, roll, yaw of ROV for the motion correction of the magnetic data. The data of the magnetometer sensor and the motion sensor were recorded on a notebook through the optical cable of ROV and the network of ARON. The precision positions of magnetic data were merged by the post-processing of USBL data of ROV. The obtained three components magnetic data are entirely utilized by finding possible hydrothermal vents of the survey area.
The magnetometer is one of the most important payloads for scientific satellite to monitor the near-earth space environment. The electromagnetic variations of the space environment can be observed with the electric and magnetic field measurements. In practice, it is well known that the measurement of magnetic fields needs less technical complexities than that of electric fields in space. Therefore the magnetometer has long been recognized as one of the basic payloads for the scientific satellites. In this paper, we discuss the scientific fluxgate magnetometer which will be on board the KITSAT-3. The main circuit design of the present magnetometer is based on that of KITSAT-1 and -2 but its facilities have been re-designed to improve the resolution to about 5nT for scientific purpose. The calibration and noise level test of this circuit have been performed at the laboratory of the Tierra Tecnica company in Japan.
The local coercivity distribution of CoCrPt alloy films prepared by dc magnetron sputtering has been investigated by means of a magneto-optical microscope magnetometer (MOMM) capable of simultaneously measuring the local properties on 400 nm spatial resolutions. Serial samples of CoCrPt alloy films were prepared with the Pt composition of a range from 6 to 28 at. %. We find that the local coercivity distribution crosses over from Gaussian to non-Gaussian distribution in CoCrPt alloy films with increasing Pt composition, with increasing trends in the width of the distribution as well as the average local coercivity. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies reveal that our findings are closely correlated with the dependences of the grain size distribution and its average size on Pt concentration.
A magnetic survey on the lake war carried out to explore the possible UXO (unexploded ordnance) under the water. A magnetic gradiometer with 2 magnetometer sensors was used, which measures total magnetic intensity. For the positioning of the measurement points on the water, RTK (real time kinematic) survey system was used. The theoretical responses were calculated assumming the dimension and the material of the UXO so that the detectability could be investigated. Since the areal size of the survey vessel was rather small, the influence from the magnetic material of the vessel and the other equipments such as a laptop computer was not negligible, and the influence did not remain constant during the survey due to the change of survey direction. These effects were reduced remarkably using moving average technique. The result reveals the lineament of a pipe line laid on the bottom of the lake, which can be regarded as an indirect proof of detectability of the method.
Magnetic survey flights by helicopters are usually parallel to the topographic surface, with a nominal clearance, but especially in high-resolution surveys the altitudes at which observations are made may be too variable to be regarded as a smooth surface. We have developed a reduction procedure for such data using the method of equivalent sources, where surrounding sources are included to control edge effects, and data from points distributed randomly in three dimensions are directly modelled. Although the problem is generally underdetermined, the method of conjugate gradients can be used to find a minimum-norm solution. There is freedom to select the harmonic function that relates the magnetic anomaly with the source. When the upward continuation function operator is selected, the equivalent source is the magnetic anomaly itself. If we select as source a distribution of magnetic dipoles in the direction of the ambient magnetic field, we can easily derive reduction-to-pole anomalies by rotating the direction of the magnetic dipoles to vertical.
Sputtering conditions and various underlayer such as Al, Cu, Ni, Cr, Ag, Mg, Fe, Co, Pd, Au, Pt, Mo and Hf were investigated for coercivity enhancement of 20 nm Ti/CoCrPt thin films in order to increase the coercivity of the films thinner than 20 nm. Among them, Ag and Mg were effective to increase the coercivity. Particularly 2 nm Ag was very effective to increase the coercivity and nucleation field as well as to reduce ${\alpha}$ value in CoCrPt thin film such that the coercivity of 2 nm Ag/18 nm Ti/10 nm CoCrPt film was 2200 Oe. However, it seemed that other coercivity enhancement mechanism operated in CoCrPt films because Ti (002) preferred texture was not developed with Ag underlayer contrary to a general expectation. And the coercivity and nucleation field were decreased when glass substrate with rougher surface was used.
Magnetic separators has been used in the mining and the recycling fields in general, and is still applied in wide variety of fields. It is classified into the equipments for separating coarse ferrous scrap from non-ferrous materials and the equipments for concentrating fine ferromagnetic particles below 3mm. Magnetic separation equipments for concentrating fine materials also falls into two categories of low intensity and high intensity magnetic separators. The former is used for ferromagnetic materials but also paramagnetic materials of high magnetic susceptibility, and the latter for paramagnetic materials of lower magnetic susceptibility. Both low and high intensity magnetic separators could be utilized either dry and wet. Recently, the High gradient magnetic separators(HGMS) used in the range of less than 0.7 tesla has been gradually replaced by the magnetic separator made of rare earth permanent magnets commercialized in the 1980s. In addition, the expansion of nanotechnology in terms of synthetic magnetic materials in the environmental and biological fields is expected to contribute positively to the development of magnetic separation technology.
