During the past several years, the major interests of car manufacturers in development of automatic transmission were in durability and shift quality. However, a large number of researches for improving shift quality that are based on dynamic characteristics of shifting mechanism have been rarely adopted in the developing process because it is quite difficult to predict the shifting performance from the dynamics simulation. One of the important reasons for the difference between simulation results and experiments arises from the automatic transmission hydraulic system that consists of many valves with high order model and shows a lot different dynamics to temperature variation. In this work, hardware-in-the-loop simulation system for automatic transmission was developed f3r improving the accuracy of simulated result by combining the real-time simulation model with the real hydraulic system. The real-time simulation for automatic transmission model excluding hydraulic system is executed with TI's TMS320C31 DSP and the interfacing board which includes 12bit A/D, PWM signal generator and driver, serial driver ,etc is designed for acquiring the simulation data and signal interface with hydraulic system. We verified the proper operation and correctness of shifting result by comparing the off-line simulation result with that of HILS and experimental result which was performed on transmission dynamometer driven by electric motor.
An automotive automatic transmission is a popular power-transmitting device in passenger vehicles, as it provides various speed ratios for diverse driving conditions with easy manipulation and smooth gear shifting. The transmission is mainly composed of input and output shafts, planetary gear sets, brakes/clutches, and housing, and it yields multiple forward gears and one reverse gear by actuating the shifting devices of the brakes and clutches. In developing a new transmission, kinematic configurations of a transmission, which presents a brief structure and actuation schemes for speed ratios, need to be checked to determine if the structure can be assembled in a layout. It is impossible for a transmission concept having any interference in connecting main components to be developed further in the design process, since connection interference leads to failure of a layout design in the 2-D plane. In this research, an analysis of the assemblability of a front-wheel drive automatic transmission is carried out on an example concept design by applying the vertex addition algorithm based on graph theory.
Nowadays automatic transmission equipped vehicles prevail in construction and agricultural equipment due to their convenience in driving and operation. Though domestic vehicle manufacturers install imported electronic controlled transmissions at present, overseas products will be replaced by domestic ones in the near future owing to development efforts over the past 10 years. For passenger cars, there are many kinds of shift control algorithms that enhance the shift quality such as feedback and learning control. However, since shift control technologies for heavy duty vehicles are not highly developed, it is possible to improve the shift quality with an organized control method. A feedback control algorithm for neutral-into-gear shift, which is enabled during the inertia phase for the master clutch slip speed to track the slip speed reference, is proposed based on the power transmission structure of TH100. The performance of the feedback shift control is verified by a vehicle test which is implemented with firmware embedded TCU. As the master clutch engages along the predetermined speed trajectory, it can be concluded that the shift quality can be managed by a shift time control parameter. By extending the proposed feedback algorithm for neutral-into-gear shift to gear change and shuttle shift, it is expected that the quality of the shift can be improved.
This paper suggests new hydraulic circuit to control the pressure of clutches and brakes which has several advantages than conventional hydraulic circuit in automatic transmissions. In conventional hydraulic circuit, the pressures of all friction elements are controlled by only one pressure control valve and accumlators. So, controllable range is limited and it is unable to control the friction elements independently. Therefore, we can not do the fine control of timing between apply clutch and release clutch which is needed in clutch-to clutch shifting automatic transmissions. To overcome these faults, we designed the direct-acting hydraulic circuit where one pressure control valve and pressure control solenoid valve are allocated to each friction element and control that independently. Through this structural improvement of hydraulic circuit, we can achieve elaborate aontrol to clutch pressure. Specially, We can control the timing between apply clutch and release clutch delicately which is needed in clutch-to-clutch shifting.
This paper suggests direct-acting hydraulic circuit to control clutches and brakes in automatic transmission. As only one pressure control valve controls the pressure of several friction elements with accumulators in conventional hydraulic circuit, the controllable range is limited. In addition, it is difficult to control the fine timing between apply clutch and release clutch. So, we designed new method to control the pressure of clutch which uses ressure control valve and pressure control solenoid valve independently in each friction element. through this structure improvement of hydraulic circuit, we can control the pressure of clutches and brakes finely and fine timing of between apply clutch and release clutch.
Dynamic simulation techniques are developed to analyze the shift characteristics of vehicle powertraisn with automatic transmission. In this study, the mathematical modeling of powertrain components such as engine , clutch system, planetary gear system and road load , is presented for the simulation. The clutch engagement condition, which determines the degree of freedom for the system, is also proposed .By using a detailed nonlinear model of torque converter, it is possibile to accurately analyze the extremely transient state such as the shift. Dynamo-based experiments are carried out to prove the validity of the proposed simulation techniques. Using the developed simulation program, the effects of the dynamic design variables and the control conditions , focused on the shift, are evaluated to improve the driving comforability.
In this study, a mathematical model fur analyzing the shift characteristics is proposed. The proposed model comprises power transmission system and vehicle system, which are coupled. And On-road car test is carried out in order to extract model parameters. Tile model is composed of a detailed powertrain, an engine/AT housing, a simplified suspension system. tires and a vehicle body model. On the test, the vehicle accelerations and pitch ratio are measured by using accelerometers and gyro sensor. The other data, for example speeds, a throttle position and a brake signal, are taken from sensors which already exist in the vehicle. Using natural frequency and characteristic equation, vehicle model parameters are extracted from experimental data.
The dynamic characteristics during gear ratio change including the disturbance of output torque has been one of the most important issues in the study of automatic transmissions of passenger cars. In this paper, to investigate the dynamic characteristics of a passenger car automatic transmission during gear ratio change, a dynamic model of the driveline of a passenger car focused on the automatic transmission is proposed and the dynamic simulation program is developed. The results of the simulation show good agreements with the experimental data, which process the use fullness of the dynamic model and the simulation of the driveline.
As the digital control technologies in automotive industry have advanced, electronic control units(ECUs) play a key-role to improve system performance. Transmission control unit(TCU) is a shifting controller for automatic transmission of which major functions are to determine the shift and manage the shifting process considering the various sensor signal on transmission and driver's commands. As with any ECU in vehicle, TCU performs complex algorithms such as shift control, diagnostic and failsafe functions. However, firmware design analysis is hardly possible by the reverse engineering due to code protection. Transmission simulator is a hardware-in-the-loop simulator which enables TCU to work in normal mode by simulating the electrical signal of TCU interface. In this research, diagnosis and failsafe algorithm implemented on commercialized TCU is analyzed by using the transmission simulator that is developed for wheel loader construction vehicle. This paper gives various experimental results on the proportional solenoid current trajectories for different operating modes, error detection criterion and limphome mode gears for all the possible cases of clutch malfunction. The derived results for conventional TCU can be applied to the development of inherent TCU algorithms and the transmission simulator can also be utilized for the test of TCU to be developed.
