  • This paper presents a vision based object width measurement method and its application where the light sectioning method is employed. The target object for measurement is a tread, which is the most outside component of an automobile tire. The entire system applying the measurement method consists of two processes, i.e. a calibration process and a detection process. The calibration process is to identify the relationships between a camera plane and a laser plane, and to estimate a camera lens distortion parameters. As the process requires a test pattern, namely a jig, which is elaborately manufactured. In the detection process, first of all, the region that a laser light illuminates is extracted by applying an adaptive thresholding technique where the distribution of the pixel brightness is considered to decide the optimal threshold. Then, a thinning algorithm is applied to the region so that the ends and the shoulders of a tread are detected. Finally, the tread width and the shoulder width are computed using the homography and the distortion coefficients obtained by the calibration process.

  • This paper proposes an effective algorithm of Korean license plate recognition. By applying Haar-like feature and Canny edge detection on a captured vehicle image, it is possible to find a connected rectangular, which is a strong candidate for license plate. The color information of license plate separates plates into white and green. Then, OTSU binary image processing and foreground neighbor pixel propagation algorithm CLNF will be applied to each license plates to reduce noise except numbers and letters. Finally, through labeling, numbers and letters will be extracted from the license plate. Letter and number regions, separated from the plate, pass through mesh method and thinning process for extracting feature vectors by X-Y projection method. The extracted feature vectors are classified using neural networks trained by backpropagation algorithm to execute final recognition process. The experiment results show that the proposed license plate recognition algorithm works effectively.

  • 300,000 tons of waste tires are annually being produced with development of the automotive industry in Korea. Landfill and incineration treatment system are causing the economic problem through secondary environmental pollution and waste. Therefore, as one of the ways to take advantage of this, Thermo-Plastic Vulcanized (TPV) composite was prepared by the ground waste tire and plastic powders. The waste tire powder was gained by mechanical fracturing through crushers. The waste tire powder was ground by a shear crushing method and a 2-stage disk mill method instead of cutting crushing one. The waste tire powder of 50 mesh was mixed with Polypropylene(PP) in various proportions. TPVs were prepared by an extrusion, and tensile and impact tests were performed. In addition, the same experiments were repeated in 40, 80, 140 mesh conditions in order to observe size effect of waste tire powders.

  • Traumatic cardiac injury is an extremely serious medical condition. It is possible to overlook a cardiac injury where there is no chest wall trauma. We here report the 47-year-old woman who got a crach car accident and had a tear of the right atrium. The distortion force from a decelerating injury may cause cardiac rupture at a fixed point. The most common symptom that alerts the clinician to a potentially fatal cardiac injury is the change in vital signs. Therefore cardiac injury should be considered in any patient with unexplained hypotension who has experienced decelerating trauma, even without external injury to the chest wall.

  • High temperature and stress are encounted in power plants and vehicle engines. Therefore, determination of the creep-fatigue life of a material is necessary prior to fabricating equipments. In this study, life design was determined on the basis of the lethargy coefficient for different temperatures, stress and rupture times. SP-Creep test data was compared with computed data. The SP-Creep test was performed to obtain the rupture time for X20CrMoV121 steel. The integration life equation was considered for three cases with various load, temperature and load-temperature. First, the lethargy coefficient was calculated by using the obtained rupture stress and the rupture time that were determined by carrying out the SP-Creep test. Next, life was predicted on the basis of the temperature condition. Finally, it was observed that life decreases considerably due to the coupling effect that results when fatigue and creep occur simultaneously.

  • There are debates about whether peripherally induced movement disorders exist. We report a case of upper limb tremor induced by peripheral nerve injury. A 20-year-old male patient presented with pain and tremor of the left upper extremity, 2 days after a car accident. Magnetic resonance images of the brain and cervical spine were normal. His past medical history was unremarkable and there were no family members with symptoms of movement disorders. He suffered from an aggravating tremor for about 10 minutes, four to six times a day. We treated the patient with medication, epidural infusion, cervical nerve root block and trigger point injection of the trapezius muscle. The pain subsided 50% and the incidence of tremor attacks was reduced to once or twice a day. The role of peripheral trauma in the genesis of movement disorders has not been generally accepted. It is unclear whether peripheral trauma can induce dystonia and other movement disorders. It has been proposed that peripheral trauma can alter sensory input and induce cortical and subcortical reorganization that generates a movement disorder. Some studies provide evidence for central reorganization following peripheral injury.

  • Recently, the use of drone has been increasing rapidly in many ways. A drone can capture remote objects efficiently so it is suitable for surveillance and security systems. This paper discusses three methods for detecting moving vehicles using a drone. We compare three target detection methods using a background frame, preceding frames, or moving average frames. They are subtracted from a current frame. After the frame subtraction, morphological filters are applied to increase the detection rate and reduce the false alarm rate. In addition, the false alarm region is removed based on the true size of targets. In the experiments, three moving vehicles were captured by a drone, and the detection rate and the false alarm rate were obtained by three different methods and the results are compared.

  • This paper focuses on to improving object detection performance using the camera and LiDAR on autonomous vehicle platforms by fusing detected objects from individual sensors through a late fusion approach. In the case of object detection using camera sensor, YOLOv3 model was employed as a one-stage detection process. Furthermore, the distance estimation of the detected objects is based on the formulations of Perspective matrix. On the other hand, the object detection using LiDAR is based on K-means clustering method. The camera and LiDAR calibration was carried out by PnP-Ransac in order to calculate the rotation and translation matrix between two sensors. For Sensor fusion, intersection over union(IoU) on the image plane with respective to the distance and angle on world coordinate were estimated. Additionally, all the three attributes i.e; IoU, distance and angle were fused using logistic regression. The performance evaluation in the sensor fusion scenario has shown an effective 5% improvement in object detection performance compared to the usage of single sensor.

  • Development of low cost rechargeable batteries has been considered as a significant task for future large-scale energy storage units (i.e. electric vehicles, smart grids). Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been recognized as a promising alternative to replace conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their abundancy and economic benign. Nevertheless, Na ions have larger ionic radius than that of Li ions, resulting in sluggish transport of Na ions in electrodes for cell operation. There have been efforts to seek suitable anode materials for the past years operated based on three different kinds of reaction mechanism (intercalation, alloy reaction, and conversion reaction). In this review, we introduce a class of conversion reaction anode materials for Na-ion batteries, which have been reported.

  • Arduino, based on open source hardware, is used in many IoT devices, and IoT devices require multitasking for various inputs and outputs. Among the several methods used for multitasking based on Arduino, we compare three methods: Timing Call by using millis(), Simple Timer library method, and Timer library method. In order to measure the execution error caused by measurement and time delay of each method, two situations are created and analyzed. In the first case, 10 random tasks of a certain size are generated to measure the time delay of each method. In the second situation, 10 random tasks of a certain size are generated to compare execution errors caused by the time lag of the Timer library. In the first case, the millis() timing call method and the Simple Timer library method have a similar time delay and the Timer library method has more time delay. In the second situation, an execution error occurred in which small-size tasks were not called back at the correct timing due to the time delay.
