  • This study focuses on the mediated effect of value of children with a purpose of examining the influence of maternal family-of-origin. A group of 247 mothers having young children in the age of 3 to 5 years participated in a survey which is consisted of the scale of family-of-origin experiences, parenting attitude and value of children. The study results show four aspects: First, family-of-origin experiences have positive effect on value of children. Second, maternal value of children also appears to be positive on parenting attitude. Third, family-of-origin experiences have positive effect on parenting attitude. Lastly, value of children shows mediated effect between family-of-origin experience and parenting attitude. In other words, having high level of positive awareness in family-of-origin experiences brings positive value of children, and the value of children brings positive effect on parenting attitude. Therefore, multilateral measures and methodical supports are needed to develop positive value of children, and consideration on father is required as a joint partner of rearing children.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of father's value of children and cultural orientation on the father's parenting involvement. Data were collected from 286 fathers on FPI, VOC, and COR, which then were analyzed using correlation and multiple regression. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, emotional value of children was positively related to the father's parenting involvement, but instrumental value of children was negatively related to the father's parenting involvement. Second, collectivism had a stronger relationships with the father's parenting involvement than individualism. Third, father's education level was positively related to the father's parenting involvement. The above findings imply that father's value of children is an important variables of parenting involvement and cultural orientation is also a good predictor of parenting involvement.

To this end, this study investigated family-of-origin experience, value of children, parenting attitude, and degree of parenting participation on 247 fathers of 3~5 year old children. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and Sobel Test were conducted using SPSS 21 program on the collected data. According to the research result, there was a significantly positive relationship between emotional value of children, parenting attitude, and parenting participation among family-of-origin experience and value of children. This study conducted a regression analysis and Sobel Test by stage to identify mediating effects. As a result, it was identified that father's family-of-origin experience makes positive effect on parenting attitude and parenting participation, and emotional value of children among value of children mediates their relationship. Based on the findings, this study suggested that multilateral consideration and systematic system for formation of positive value of children are needed and suggested the direction of follow-up study on fathers as a coparent.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether parental beliefs, value of children, and filial obligation were related. The subjects were 748 students(male 323, female 425) who were currently enrolled at university located in Seoul. The instruments used for this study were Filial Obligation Scale(Cho, 2002), Parenting Beliefs Questionnaire, and Value of Children by Arnold et al.(1975, 2001). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlations by SPSS PC Program. The results showed that university students generally demonstrated a higher level of individual-oriented beliefs than relation-oriented beliefs on parental beliefs. With regard to parental beliefs, family relation-oriented beliefs was relatively low in comparison with independence/autonomy-oriented beliefs, happiness-oriented beliefs, and cognition/knowledge-oriented beliefs. In addition, emotional value of children was relatively high in comparison with instrumental value of children. Also, male university students possessed a higher level of filial obligation. the level of cohabitation experience with their parents played a significant role in affecting the level of filial obligation. Unsurprisingly, a higher relation-oriented parental beliefs and emotional value of children demonstrated a higher level of filial obligation. There were also positive relationships between emotional value, instrumental value, and filial obligation. Hence, this study suggests that a practical, functional training services and resources for future parents must be ensued.

A total of 442 respondents, consisting of 221 young mothers (average age of 35) and 221 maternal grandmothers (average age of 63) completed a questionnaire developed by Kim, Park and Kwon (2005). The reliability of the scales ranged from Cronbach α of .78 to .91. The results are as follows. First, as for the ideal number of children, young mothers reported that they would prefer two children, while grandmothers reported that they would prefer four children. As for the ideal number of male child, young mothers reported that they would prefer that they would prefer one son, while grandmothers reported two sons. Second, as for the gender of the child, young mothers did not show a gender preference, while grandmothers stated that at least one child should be a son, especially if it is the only child. Third, grandmothers had higher expectation of old age security in their male child than young mothers but two groups did not show any difference for the female child. Fourth, as for positive values of children, young mothers were more likely to emphasize personal aspects (i.e., psychological pleasure and happiness) and family cohesiveness, while grandmothers were more likely to emphasize social aspects (i.e., continuing the family line and old age security. As for negative values of children, young mothers were more likely to emphasize personal aspects (i.e., parental role and responsibility), while grandmothers were more likely to emphasize social aspects (i.e., family conflict and relationship). Fifth, as for factors that influenced the number of children that they decided to have, young mothers were more likely to report negative values of children (i.e., financial constraints), while grandmothers were more likely to emphasize positive values of children (i.e., continuing the family line).

  • This paper examines the changes in family values in Korea by examining values of children, socialization values, and social support of elderly parents with young and olders mothers. A total of 314 mothers of infants (young mothers) and 395 mothers of adolescents (older mothers) completed a questionnaire compiled by Schwarz, Chakkarath, Trommsdorff, Schwenk and Nauck(2001) comprising of values of children, cultural values, socialization values, interpersonal relationship, social support, stress, and life-satisfaction. In terms of values of children, the older mothers are more likely to emphasize social values, such as continuing the family line. Young mothers are more likely to emphasize psychological values, such as the pleasure of seeing a child grow. As for reasons for net wanting to have children, young mothers are more likely to point out personal constraints than older mothers, such as restriction of freedom. Second, older mothers are more likely than young mothers to express willingness to provide support for their children and even when their children become adults. Older mothers had a more lenient expectation of their children in terms developmental timetable and to expect support from their children when compared with young mothers. Young mothers are more likely to socialize their children with greater warmth and at the same time have higher child-rearing stress when compared to older mothers. Third, when compared with older mothers, young mothers are more likely to receive practical and emotional support from their parents. On the other hand, older mothers are more likely to provide greater practical and emotional support to their parents than the young mothers. Overall, compared to young mothers, older mothers are more likely to hold traditional and conservative values of children and socialization values. These contrasting values reflect the changes in family structure and social change that have been progressing rapidly in recent years.

Thus, the value of the child was higher in fathers than in mothers; however, parenting stress and parenting attitude were higher in mothers than in fathers. There were positive correlations among value of child, parenting stress, and parenting attitude. Moreover, the parents' value of the child shows an actor effect in parenting stress. Moreover, the value of the child and parenting stress show actor effect in parenting attitude. In this study, many variables were found to have only an actor effect; however, the parenting stress of the mother was found to have a partner effect of lowering the parenting attitude of the father. This study is significant as it confirms the relationship among the value of child, parenting stress, and parenting attitude based on the APIM analysis method that considers the characteristics of couple data.
