The present study examined the capacity of Korean adolescents' self-esteem to buffer against the negative impact of academic stress on self-control. Based on the prevention science perspective, the conceptual framework for this study was developed from the strength model of self-control. Data for the present study were taken from the fourth wave of Korean Youth Panel Study. A sample of 2,169 students in the eleventh grade was analyzed to identify relationships between the study variables. As expected, self-esteem moderated the association between academic stress and self-control. Implications for the study findings are discussed.
The purpose of this study was to examine effect of locus of control and self-efficacy on stress of selected dental hygiene students. This study provides basic data to develop a method to reduce stress. The students of A women's college in Kyungi province majoring in dental hygiene were asked to answer the locus of control scale, self-efficacy scale, and stress level. As a result, this study concluded the following findings: 1. Locus of control scale was 8.77 and it meant the students used internal control. Self-efficacy scale was beyond median. In stress level category, mean of stress was 2.32, stress with friends was 2.05, stress with money was 2.33, stress with course in life was 2.29, stress with family members was 2.24, stress with study was 2.95. 2. Stress had negative relations with locus of control and self-efficacy. There was a positive relation between locus of control and self-efficacy. 3. Effect of self-efficacy on stress was significantly negative but effect of locus of control on stress was insignificant. In subscale, effect of self-efficacy and locus of control on stress with study was insignificant. 4. Indirect effect of locus of control on stress was statistically significant. The students with internal locus of control showed high self-efficacy and the students with high self-efficacy showed low stress level. In conclusion, educators should make an effort to reduce stress of students and understand the factors related to stress.
This study aimed to analyse the effects of a self-regulation group counselling program on self-esteem and self-control in adolescents on probation. In respect to sub-areas of the effects the self-regulation group counselling program had on self-esteem in adolescents, there were statistically significant differences in general self-esteem, social self-esteem and family self-esteem. Also, there were statistically significant differences in all the areas including impulse control and emotional control as sub-areas of self-control. Such results experimentally showed that the self-regulation group counselling program had a significant effect on self-esteem and self-control in adolescents on probation. Therefore, it is expected that the probability of repeating their crimes will decrease greatly if the subjects have self-esteem and self-control enhanced through the group counselling program. It is suggested further studies on the self-regulation group counselling program and its practical use are needed to enhance self-esteem and self-control in adolescents on probation.
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the relationships among college students' life stress, self-efficacy, locus of control, and subjective well-being. A total of 279 college students participated in this study. It was administered a questionnaire consisting of questioned of concerning life stress, self-efficacy, locus of control, and subjective well-being. The correlation analysis and the analysis of mediating effect were conducted on the data. The main results of data analysis showed (1) correlations among life stress, self-efficacy, locus of control, and subjective well-being, (2) significant mediating effect of self-efficacy between life stress and subjective well-being. The direction of a further study was suggested.
As dating violence is recently rising as one of the most serious social issues, the study examined the effect of internalized shame on controlling behavior manifested in dating relationship. We explored the mediation effect of self-absorption, indicating maladaptive self-focused attention, between each of the four sub-factors of internalized shame(inadequacy, emptiness, self punishment, and fear of mistake) and controlling behavior. Based on the data obtained from 200 single people in their 20-30s, it was revealed that the internalized shame, the self-absorption, and the controlling behavior in dating relationships were all positively correlated. The mediation effect of self-absorption was significant between the sub-factors of internalized shame (inadequacy, emptiness, self punishment, and fear of mistake) and controlling behavior. In other words, the higher the inadequacy, emptiness, self punishment, and fear of mistake, the bigger the self-absorption, and the more frequent the controlling behavior in dating relationship.
This study, for the first time, examined predictive validity of stress mindset-the beliefs about the effects of stress-on perceived stress and self-control in college students. To do so, 159 college students completed self-reported questionnaires on stress mindset, perceived stress, and self-control. The results indicated that compared to students who believed stress can be utilized, those who believed stress is strictly harmful tended to experience higher level of stress, which, in turn, predicted lower self-control. These findings suggest that changing college students ' stress mindset may be a good way to help them to thrive mentally and behaviorally.
This study attempted to verify the structural model of the effects of stress, self-efficacy, and self-control on smartphone addiction in University students. The subjects of this study were 440 University students in G and P city. Results, First the most influential variables on smartphone addiction were self-control, followed by stress, and two variables explained explanation about smartphone addiction in 34%. Second, self-efficacy had a positive effect on self-control and stress had a negative effect. Both variables had an indirect effect on smartphone addiction through self-control. In groups less than 4 hours and above, there was a partial regulation effect because of differences between groups in the smartphone addiction pathway coefficients of stress and self-efficacy. Therefore, in order to reduce smartphone addiction, it is important to find ways to reduce stress and increase self-control and self-efficacy, and necessary to develop various programs and tailor educational interventions for each individual situation.

Second, peer support showed significant difference according to sex. Family strength showed partially significant difference according to standard of living and parents' education achievement. Self-controls showed significant difference according to sex and father's education achievement. Third, family strength and the self-control showed significant correlation. Forth, the high school students' self-control was influenced by role sharing and problem solving, communication and family bonding and fathers' education achievement. And the high school students' self-control was explained about 15% by these variables. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the self-control of dental hygiene students on their stress and stress-coping style. The subjects in this study were dental hygiene students who were selected by convenience sampling from three different colleges. After data were gathered, the answer sheets from 561 respondents were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Concerning the level of self-control, the dental hygiene students got a mean of 3.22. As to self-control by grade, the juniors got the highest scores of 3.27 (p<0.05), and those who were under heavier stress were poorer at self-control (p<0.05). 2. In regard to stress-coping style, they got a mean of 3.28 and 3.34 in active coping and passive coping respectively. Passive coping was more prevailing, and the students whose economic status was higher made more use of active coping styles (p<0.001). There were statistically significant differences in active coping styles according to stress level (p<0.01) and the effect of stress on health (p<0.05). 3. Better self-control led to more frequent use of active coping styles. The above-mentioned findings imply that self-control is one of factors to affect stress coping. Therefore the development of counseling programs is required to step up the improvement of self-control.
