  • The phenomenology of liquid breakdown has been an area of interest for many years but is still not fully understood. Moreover, it was known that the behavior of magnetic nanoparticles in transformer oil could affect the dielectric breakdown voltage positively or negatively. In this study, we have imaged the magnetic nanoparticles in a transformer oil in-situ using an optical microscopic set-up and a microchannel according to the electric and magnetic fields applied. And we have calculated numerically dielectrophoresis and magnetophoresis forces, which must be the driving mechanisms to move magnetic nanoparticles in the fluid. It was found that when the electric field is applied the magnetic nanoparticles in the fluid experience an electrical force directed toward the place of maximum electric field strength. And when the external magnetic field is applied, the magnetic nanoparticles form long chains oriented along the direction of the field.

  • Micro-magnetic detection system is used to detect small particles in an automatic transmission valve body, which signal noise and time-delay may occurs in process of signal transmitting and filtering. In this paper, we present the design and implement of a micro-magnetic detection system based on wireless sensor networks. Micro-magnetic detection system consists of five modules which are magnetic sensor detector, signal processing unit, wireless sensor networks, system control unit and system monitoring unit. The experimental results show that signal noise and time-delay decreased.

  • We investigated the changes of the magnetic properties in electroplated Permalloy thin films by a few organic additives added to the plating electrolytes. Under identical electroplating conditions, the crystalline orientations and the surface roughness of the plated thin films were different from those prepared with a pure electrolyte. These property changes reduced the coercivity and increased the magnetoimpedance ratio (MIR) up to 20%.

  • We developed a microfluidic platform able to control the trap and release of magnetic beads used for separation of a specific biomolecules. The magnetic beads can be trapped and released conditionally by controlling the difference between the Stokes force induced by the fluid flow and magnetic force resulting from a permanent magnet. The permanent magnet of CoNiP alloy is electroplated. It is characterized to have the 1369 Oe of coercivity, 1762 Gauss of remanence, and 0.603MGOe of (BH)max. Through the experimental and numerical investigation, the magnetic beads are trapped under the flow velocity of 17 ${\mu}m/s$ and are released perfectly above the velocity of 174 ${\mu}m/s$.

  • Under non-uniform electric field, a directional force along the electric field gradient is applied to matter having permanent or induced dipoles. The transport of particles by the directional force is called dielectrophoresis (DEP). Since the strength and direction of the DEP force depend on parameters, such as permittivity and conductivity of particles and surrounding media, and frequency of the applied AC electric field, particle can be precisely manipulated by controlling the parameters. Moreover, unlike electrophoresis, DEP can be applied to any particles where dipole is effectively induced by electric field. Such a DEP technique has been used in various fields, ranging from microfluidic engineering to biosensor and microchip research. This paper first describes the fundamentals of DEP, and discusses representative microelectrode designs used for DEP study. Then, exemplary applications of DEP, such as separation, capture and self-assembly of particles, are introduced.
