The higher level of smoking and alcohol intake, the more likely to perceive halitosis; all of those with a general disease perceived halitosis; and the more stress, the more likely to perceive halitosis. Second, The respondents who brushed their teeth three times a day, who spent 1~2 minutes in brushing their teeth, who failed to wash their tongue, and who had never received oral health education were most likely to perceive halitosis. And third. such factors as age, the amount of tongue coating, and dry mouth affected halitosis perception status. Firefighters' halitosis perception is related to several factors. For this reason, emphasis is placed on the need to develop a program for helping firefighters prevent halitosis and remove oral symptoms and to give education for good oral health management.

Methods : This research used PHP index and the structured questionnaire. The subjects were 203 men in their 20's who visited K university's dental hygiene department for oral prophylaxis from March to July of 2012. For data analysis SPSS WIN 12.0 was used. Results : 1. The average PHP index of all experimented subjects was 2.66, a very poor level. The PHP index according to general characteristics, smoking, drinking, and exercise showed statistical significance(p<0.05). 2. PHP index decreased with more frequencies and longer durations of toothbrushing(p<0.05). 3. The PHP index of smokers is higher than that of non-smokers. In the case of non-smokers, the frequency, method, and duration of tooth brushing had a statistical significance(p<0.05). 4. The PHP index of smokers who smoke less than or equal to ten cigarettes is 2.53 and smokers who smoked more than 10 cigarettes is 3.10. 5. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that smoking increased the PHP index, while the increase in tooth brushing frequency and the up and down tooth brushing method decreased the PHP index. All the coefficients were statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions : In order to increase Patient Hygiene Performance(PHP) index. there must be a decrease in smoking rate while people increase their tooth brushing frequency and use a proper tooth brushing method.

  • Periodontal disease as one of oral diseases is a chronic disease that continuously worsens once it occurs. It begins with gingivitis in the late school childhood. Its prevalence rate gradually increases in adolescence and continues to rise until young and middle ages. Therefore, the preventive care for the disease in one's whole life is of very importance. Since periodontal disease can be prevented and controlled by oral health behaviors, this study focuses on the relation between adults' oral health behaviors and the disease and emphasizes its importance. Based on the data of the 2015 6th (3rd Year) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the prevalence rate of periodontal disease was compared according to study subjects' oral health behaviors. As a result, gum disease treatment, the count of gum brushing, use of dental floss use of interdental brush, and subjective oral health condition were statistically meaningful. Given that oral health behaviors are related to periodontal disease, it is necessary to conduct a systematic study for developing and performing the oral health education program to make the right habit of oral health behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic oral health education on the improvement of knowledge levels and patient hygiene performance(PHP) for elementary school students. The randomly selected 1st and 5th grade students in a public elementary school of Taegu city were divided by education group(118 students) and non-education group(122 students). The oral health education lesson was systematically held on the education group once a month for 4 months. The questionnaire queried all the subjects about their knowledge and attitudes before and after oral health education, and PHP was also tested at the same time. Corresponding p-values were significantly considered at values less than 0.05. The obtained results were as follows: Due to the oral health education lesson, the education group of both 1st and 5th grade students came to have a higher knowledge level than the non-education group. There was high improvement of items such as toothbrushing time, toothbrushing method, cause of dental caries, treatment after tooth damage, and tongue-brushing. Therefore, these items should be educated to all the elementary school students. By increaseing the knowledge level of oral health after education, the PHP index in the education group was significantly decreased in comparison to the non-education group and hence the capability of oral health management improved. From the above results, a systematically and periodically oral health education system for elementary school students can improve the knowledge level and capability of oral health management. Further study will be required to develop an easy and acceptable systemic oral health education program for elementary schools.
