Accurate prediction of size, shape and velocity of a bubble rising through a liquid pool is very important for predicting the particulate removal efficiency in pool scrubbing, for designing engineering safety features to prepare for severe accidents in nuclear power plants, and for predicting the emission of fission products from MCCI (molten core-concrete interaction) process during severe accidents. In this review article, previous studies on the determination of the size, shape and rising velocity of a bubble in liquid are reviewed. Various theoretical and parameterization formulas calculating the bubble size, shape and velocity from physical properties of liquid and gas flowrate are compared. Recent studies tend to suggest simple parameterizations that can easily determine the bubble shape and rising velocity without iteration, whereas iteration has to be performed to determine the bubble shape and velocity in old theories. The recent parameterizations show good agreement with measured data obtained from experiments conducted using different liquid materials with very diverse physical properties, proving themselves to be very useful tools for researchers in related fields.
Reactive hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (reactive HPMCP) was synthesized by using a stepwise urethane reaction with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and 2-hydroxyethyl moth acrylate (HEMA). Molecular weight, acid number, and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized reactive HPMCP and pristine HPMCP were measured and used as a polymeric surfactant in the emulsion polymerizations of styrene. In the preparation of HPMCP-hybrid poly styrene nanoparticles, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 wt% of HPMCPs were introduced, and the maximum rate of polymerization ($R_{p,max}$), the average number of radicals per particle (n), particle size distribution were investigated. In addition, core - shell morphology of the nanoparticles were observed by using TEM and their thermal stabilities were measured by using TGA. Reactive HPMCP showed higher $R_{p,max}$, smaller particle size, larger values of n and gel contents as compared with pristine HPMCP, due to the vinyl groups from HEMA, which can be reacted with styrene oligomers, in the reactive HPMCP.
In this study, nano-sized indium oxide powder with the average particle size below 100 nm is prepared from the indium chloride solution by the spray pyrolysis process. The effects of the concentration of raw material solution, the nozzle tip size and the air pressure on the properties of powder were studied. As the indium concentration of the raw material solution increased from 40 g/l to 350 g/l, the average particle size of the powder gradually increased from 20 nm to 60 nm, yet the particle size distribution appeared more irregular, the intensity of a XRD peak increased and specific surface area decreased. As the nozzle tip size increased from 1 nm to 5 nm, the average particle size of the powder increased from 40 nm to 100 nm, the particle size distribution was much more irregular, the intensity of a XRD peak increased and specific surface area decreased. As the air pressure increased from 0.1 kg/cm$^2$ to 0.5 kg/cm$^2$, the average particle size of the powder varies slightly upto 90~100 nm. As the air pressure increased from 1 kg/cm$^2$ to 3 kg/cm$^2$, the average particle size decreased upto 50~60 nm, the intensity of a XRD peak decreased and the specific surface area increased.

In games and films, the most highlighted fields in entertainment industry, those special effects such as flame, explosion, smoke, liquid, snow, rain and dust are generated through the particle system. Special effects can be expressed realistically by the particle system API that is a graphic library of high level in game and virtual reality. When developers apply the particle system API in applications, they must exchange parameters repeatedly and compile source codes until special efforts that they want are expressed, and It takes much time until the minute control that have relations between each parameters. This paper develops a particle system API usable in on-line game and real-time virtual reality and presents particle system editor that can see and create special effect easily through attributes adjustment such as position, velocity, color, transparency, size, age, the secondary position, the second velocity etc.
In the synthesis of water-based polyurethane using self-emulsification process, after being neutralized, polyurethane pre-polymers containing ionic pendant groups are dispersed by simple convective mixing. Preparation of dispersion is followed by chain extension reaction, which is considered as important step for growth of the molecular weight of polyurethane. In this work, pH variations in the aqueous phase were monitored during the chain extension process in the presence of water-soluble diamines. The optimum degree of chain extension and the average particle size in the polyurethane dispersions were examined with varying ionic pendent group contents, type of chain extenders, and feed rate of chain extenders, The initial pH value in the aqueous phase linearly increased and the optimum chain extension point could be obtained from the intersection of two linear lines having different slopes, All average particle sizes before chain extension reaction were almost same, however, the final average particle size increased as feed rates of chain extenders increased, In addition, as the ionic pendant group contents increased, the particle size decreased since the hydrophilicity and hydrodynamic volume increased. As carbon numbers of the chain extenders increased, the final particle size increased significantly. From the results, it was concluded that the chain extension reaction took place among the particles not only in a particle.

In the spray drying with rotating wheel atomizer of cheese powder, the relationships among variables were analyzed with Response Surface Methodology in which several independent variables such as total solid content, wheel rotation speed, and outlet temperature influenced dependent variables such as particle diameter, moisture content, bulk density, and viscosity of suspended liquid. Significance and correlation were tested according to central composite design. As a results of analyzing the correlations between independent and dependent variables, particle diameter and moisture content of cheese powder were decreased with increasing wheel rotation speed, and bulk density was decreased with increasing outlet temperature. Viscosity of suspended liquid were increased with increasing wheel rotation speed and total moisture content. In correlation among dependent variables, moisture content was proportional to bulk density, and particle diameter was inversly proportional to moisture content and bulk density.
We prepared monodispersed spherical silica microgels by controlling various conditions of emulsification procedure using a lab-scale membrane emulsification system equipped with SPG (Shirasu porous glass) porous membrane having pore size of $1.5{\mu}m$. We determined the effects of process parameters of membrane emulsification (ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, sodium silicate concentration, emulsifier concentration, dispersed phase pressure, stirring speed) on the mean size and size distribution of silica microgels. The increase of the ratio of dispersed phase to continuous phase, dispersed phase pressure and sodium silicate concentration led to the increase in the mean size of microgels. On the contrary, the increase in emulsifier concentration and stirring speed of the continuous phase caused the reduction of the mean size of microgels. Through controlling these parameters, monodisperse spherical silica microgels with about $6{\mu}m$ of the mean size were finally prepared.

Experimental studies of particle (TiO$\_$2/) deposition from the laminar hot gas particle flow (about 1565K) onto the cold wall surface (about 1215K-1530K) were carried out by the 'real time' laser light reflectivity method (LLRM) and the photographs of scanning electron microscope(SEM). The LLRM was used for the measurement of thermophoretic deposition rates of small particles (d$\_$p/<3.mu.m), and the photographs of SEM were used for determining what factors control the collection of particles having diameters ranging from 0.2 to 30 microns. Two phenomena are primarily responsible for transport of the particles across the laminar boundary layers and deposition: (1) particle thermophoresis (i.e. particles migration down a temperature gradient), and (2) particle inertial impaction, the former effect being especially larger factor of the particle deposition in its size over the range of 0.2 to 1 microns. And also, this study indicates that thermophoresis can be important for particles as large as 15 microns. Beyond d$\_$p/=16.mu.m, this effect diminishes and the inertial impaction is taken into account as a dominant mechanism of particle deposition. The results of present experiments found to be in close agreement with existing theories.

The characteristics of kinetic energy transfer during a collision between a rigid target particle on a surface and a fragile bullet particle moving at a high velocity were analyzed using molecular dynamics simulation. Bullet particles made of $CO_2$ were considered and their size, temperature, and velocity were varied over a wide range. The fraction of kinetic energy transferred from the bullet particle to the target particle was almost independent of the former's size or velocity; however, it was sensitively dependent on its temperature, which can be attributed to the change in the bullet rigidity with temperature. This fraction was nearly twice as high for $CO_2$ bullets as for Ar bullets. This result explains the reason for the more superior cleaning performance of $CO_2$ bullets than Ar bullets with regard to contaminants in the 10 nm size range.
