  • In this paper, we proposed a Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) to search the optimal link lengths for legged walking robot. In order to apply the PSO algorithm for the proposed, its walking robot kinematic analysis is needed. A crab robot based on four-bar linkage mechanism and Jansen mechanism is implemented in H/W. For the performance index of PSO, the stride length of the legged walking robot is defined, based on the propose kinematic analysis. Comparative simulation results present to illustrate the viability and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • A Vegetative Propagation by Runner(VPR) Algorithm-based on MPPT Algorithm that can track MPP by adapting to external environmental changes is presented. VPR is an optimization algorithm that mimics the plant ecology of movement and reproduction based on vegetation organs. The VPR algorithm includes a procedure for aging and a procedure for searching the surroundings by rhizomes. Accordingly, it is possible to continuously search around the optimal point. Therefore, the VPR-based MPPT algorithm can continuously search for an optimal point by adapting the changes in the external environment in the process of executing the MPPT algorithm. In this paper, we analyzed the performance of the VPR-based MPPT algorithm by a number of simulations. In addition, the superiority of performance was compared by performance comparison in the same environment as MPPT algorithm based on PSO.

  • This study investigates a method of designing pixel-type frequency selective surfaces(FSS) with flexibility while considering factors, such as polarization and incident angle. Among the various methods used to solve the discrete space problem when designing a pixel-type FSS, the binary particle swarm optimization(BPSO) algorithm is one of the most applicable techniques to determine the periodic structure pattern of an FSS. Therefore, a method of efficiently designing FSS with roll-off band pass characteristics using an improved BPSO algorithm is proposed. To solve the convergence problem in the fitness function design to induce particles in the desired solution, FSS with desired roll-off wave characteristics can be easily obtained by applying a fitness function using "slope" as an input parameter.

  • This paper proposes the compensation method which decreases the radiation pattern distortion caused by the mutual coupling in an array antenna. If the element distance of an array antenna decreases, the radiation pattern could be distorted by the strong mutual coupling, which changes the magnitude and phase of input signals and causes an unwanted radiation pattern. To remove the pattern distortion, compensated input signals are inserted in an array antenna. The magnitude and phase of input signals are determined by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. A $4{\times}1$ dipole array antenna with omnidirectional elements is used to confirm the validity of the algorithm, where each element is placed in 0.2 wavelength to evoke the strong coupling. After input signals are optimized by PSO, it is found that the compensated radiation results in the same as the ideal case.

  • This paper deal with uncertainty problem by using Type-2 fuzzy logic set for nonlinear system modeling. We design Type-2 fuzzy logic system in which the antecedent and the consequent part of rules are given as Type-2 fuzzy set and also analyze the performance of the ensuing nonlinear model with uncertainty. Here, the apexes of the antecedent membership functions of rules are decided by C-means clustering algorithm and the apexes of the consequent membership functions of rules are learned by using back-propagation based on gradient decent method. Also, the parameters related to the fuzzy model are optimized by means of particle swarm optimization. The proposed model is demonstrated with the aid of two representative numerical examples, such as mathematical synthetic data set and Mackey-Glass time series data set and also we discuss the approximation as well as generalization abilities for the model.

  • Droplet impingement on solid surfaces is pivotal for a range of spray and heat transfer processes. This study aims to optimize the cooling performance of single droplet impingement on heated textured surfaces. We focused on maximizing the cooling effectiveness or the total contact area at the droplet maximum spread. For efficient estimation of the optimal values of the unknown variables, we introduced an enhanced Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). These novel algorithms incorporate its developed theoretical backgrounds to compare proper optimized results. The comparison, considering the peak values of objective functions, computation durations, and the count of penalty particles, confirmed that PSO method offers swifter and more efficient searches, compared to GA algorithm, contributing finding the effective way for the spray and droplet impingement process.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve the Firefly Algorithm(FA) introduced by Xin-She Yang, recently. We design and analyze the improved firefly algorithm based on the heuristic. We compare the FA with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) which the problem domain is similar with the FA in terms of accuracy, algorithm convergence time, the motion of each particle. The compare experiments show that the accuracy of FA is not worse than PSO's, but the convergence time of FA is slower than PSO's. In this paper, we consider intuitive reasons of slow convergence time problem of FA, and propose the improved version of FA using a partial mutation heuristic based on the consideration. The experiments using benchmark functions show the accuracy and convergence time of the improved FA are better than them of PSO and original FA.

  • Urban sewer systems has a limitation of capacity of rainwater storage and problem of occurrence of untreated sewage, so adopting a storage facility for sewer flooding prevention and urban non-point pollution reduction has a big attention. The Korea Ministry of Environment has recently introduced a new concept of "multi-functional storage facility", which is crucial not only in preventive stormwater management but also in dealing with combined sewer overflow and sanitary sewer discharge, and also has been promoting its adoption. However, reserving a space for a single large-scale storage facility might be difficult especially in urban areas. Thus, decentralized construction of small- and midium-sized storage facilities and its operation have been introduced as an alternative way. In this paper, we propose a model predictive control scheme for an optimized operation of distributed storage facilities and sewer networks. To this aim, we first describe the mathematical model of each component of networks system which enables us to analyze its detailed dynamic behavior. Second, overflow locations and volumes will be predicted based on the developed network model with data on the external inflow occurred at specific locations of the network. MPC scheme based on the introduced particle swarm optimization technique then produces the optimized the gate setting for sewer network flow control, which minimizes sewer flooding and maximizes the potential storage capacity. Finally, the operational efficacy of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated by simulation study with virtual rainstorm event.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic melody composition system that can generate a sophisticated melody by adding non-harmony tone in the given chord progression. An overall procedure consists of two steps, which are the rhythm generation and melody generation parts. In the rhythm generation part, we designed new fitness functions for rhythm that can be controlled by a user setting parameters. In the melody generation part, we designed new fitness functions for melody based on harmony theory. We also designed evolutionary operators that are conducted by considering a musical context to improve computational efficiency. In the experiments, we compared four metaheuristics to optimize the rhythm fitness functions: Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA), Elitism Genetic Algorithm (EGA), Differential Evolution (DE), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Furthermore, we compared proposed genetic algorithm for melody with the four algorithms for verifying performance. In addition, composition results are introduced and analyzed with respect to musical correctness.
