  • Printed wiring boards(PWBs) of the obsolete computers are composed of various organic and inorganic compounds as well as metals and alloys. As convinced that the valuable metals obtained from the PWBs are effectively utilized as secondary resources when recovered by economical methods, in this study, an investigation for characterizing the physical separation techniques is conducted. For the recovery of them, the sockets and chips dismantled from PWBs by scraping and residual resin boards are subjected to the appropriate separation processes according to the physical properties of each part. In the case of crushed socket scraps size ranged from -2.36 mm to +1.18 mm, approximately 97 wt% of the product obtained by magnetic separation consists of metallic compounds. In the case of chip scraps, 97% of Fe-Ni alloy and 95% of Cu metal are recovered by the combined process of air classification and dry magnetic separation in the size range from -2.36 mm to +0.15 mm. Ball milling is adopted in order to improve the removal efficiency of the thin-printed metallic materials on the residual resin boards and approximately 77% of Cu metal is recovered by zigzag separation after ball milling.

  • Recently, granular soils having a large particle size are frequently used as a filling material in the construction of foundation, harbor, dam, and so on. The shear behavior of this granular soil plays a key role in the stability of structures. For example, soil particle crushing occurring at the interface between structure and soil and/or within soil mass can cause the disturbance of ground characteristics and consequently induce an issues in respect of stability of structures. In order to investigate the shear behavior according to an existence and nonexistence of particle crushing, numerical analyses were conducted by using the DEM(Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC(Particle Flow Code). Using the crushing model and non-crushing model which were created in this study, numerical analyses of ring shear test were conducted and their results were analyzed and compared. In general, landslide and slope stability are accompanied by a large displacement and consequently not only a peak strength but also a residual strength are very important in the analysis of landslide and slope stability. However the direct shear test which has been commonly used in the determination of shear strength parameters has a limitation on displacement therefore the residual strength parameters can not be obtained. The characteristics of residual shear behavior were investigated through the numerical analyses in this study.

  • In this study, undrained shear test was performed$K_o$ consolidation in order to study the shear strength characteristics of oysters-marine clay mixtures for three mixed ratios(0%, 25% and 50%). And, in order to study shear strength characteristics of oysters-marine clay mixtures, three different effective vertical stresses(200, 300 and 400kPa) were applied for the $K_o$ consolidation tests. In addition three different axial strain rates(0.005%/min, 0.05%/min, 0.5%/min) were applied for the case of effective vertical stress, 300kPa. According to experimental results, the more mixed ratios were increased, the more deviator stress was increased by crushing effect of oysters particles. especially, when effective vertical stress is 300kPa and mixed ratio increase from 25% to 50%, Test shows the increase of shear strength. But axial strain rate was not effect on the undrained shear strength. In the comparison and analysis that are based on the values of tests on the oysters-marine clay mixtures and the Mayne & Bishop's empiric formula, the undrained shear strength ratio shows a similar pattern of the tests. But for the prediction of the coefficient of the pore water pressure, the value of empiric formula shows more overestimated than the values of the tests at 0%, mixture ratio.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of several substrates; used rockwool, several spent mushroom composts, and common used media, such as rockwool and vermiculite, on growth and fruit quality of cucumber. Cucumber grew dramatically in the rockwool+peatmoss (1:2 v/v) (RP) and fine granular rockwool in hydroponic system using Yamaztiki's solution for cucumbers. The yield of cucumber fruit was highest in recycled winter mushroom compost (RW), and followed by 100% perlite (Par), recycled oyster mushroom compost (RO), and RR but there was no significant difference among these three media. Soluble solid and firmness were higher in Per and vermiculite (Ver), and any difference was not found among the others. Vitamin C was not influenced by kind of substrate. The results confirm that several reused or recycled substrates have high possibilities for use as medium for hydroponic culture in cucumber.

  • Since decomposed granite soil shows various characteristics of shear behavior dependent on initial conditions such as weathering degree and grain breakage, it is nacessary to invert ligate stress -strain relationship and changes of shear characteristics for different initial conditions. Associated with abovefnentioned view, direct shear tests, and triaxial compression tutsts(Ef, CD) were carried out in this study for undisturbed and disturbed compacted weathered granite samples obtained from 4 construction work sites with the various weathering degree and components of parent rocks. The deformation behavior of undisturbed samples under small confining stress shows hardening to softening, which is similar to that of over nsolidated clay whereas disturbed weathered granite soils do hardeningfonstant regardless of weathering degree, which is also similar to sedimentary clay. Conventional direct shear-tests for undisturbed samples show a tendency to overestimate cohesion. It is possidle to approximate stress ratio(q/p') and volumetric increment ratio(dv/ds) in the triaxital compression tests by an equation, ($dv/d\varepsilon,=\alpha(M-\eta))$ irrespective of moisture content, weathering degree and disturbance.

  • Recently, as industrialization is rapidly growing and the standard of life is rising, the quantities of waste glasses have been hastily increased and most of them are not recycled but abandoned. It cause some problems such as the waste of natural resources and environmental pollution. Therefore, this study was conducted basic experimental research to analyze the possibilities of recycling of waste glasses(crushed waste glasses outbreaking from our country such as amber, emerald-green, flint and mixed) as fine aggregates for concrete. Test results of fresh concrete, slump and compacting factors decrease because grain shape is angular and air content increase due to involving small size particles so much in waste glasses. Also compressive, tensile and flexural strengths decrease with increase of the content of waste glasses. In conclusion, the content of waste glasses below 30% is reasonable and usage of pertinent admixture is necessary to obtain workability and air content.

  • Worldwide magnesium market has been considerably growing recently due to adoption as light materials for automobile engines and electronic devices such as mobile phones. In this study, it is to prepare magnesium oxide, which is the first-step product in smelting of magnesium from the ore, using magnesite of Yongyanag mines in North Korea as raw ores. MgO grade of the magnesite was about 45 wt%, and SiO$_2$, CaO, Al$_2O_3$ and Fe$_2O_3$ were contained as impurities. The sample ore was crushed, classified and thermally analyzed to determine its calcination temperature. The sample of 45-75 ${\mu}m$ size was calcined at 600-900$^{\circ}C$, and effect of temperature on calcination and change of the particle shape was investigated. Optimum temperature of the calcination was about 750$^{\circ}C$, and 30 minutes was sufficient to obtain over 99% conversion. The purity of the calcined MgO was about 95 wt%.

  • In this study, we secured a technology for manufacturing expanded glass of uniform quality by using general tempered glass, that is, window glass, among automotive glass that is scrapped, and verified whether the manufactured expanded glass can be used for lithium battery fire suppression. The process of manufacturing expanded glass using waste glass is generally divided into Crushing → Milling → Granulation → Expansion → Cooling. With several trials a nd errors. It is obtained a yield of 0.5 ø mm to 2 ø mm spherical particles of 80 % or more. By comparing the surface analysis and physical properties, a more suitable sample was selected as a fire extinguishing agent for lithium batteries, and it was confirmed that the result of the adaptability test for lithium battery fire was satisfactory.

  • Landslides are known as gravitational mass movements that can carry the flow materials ranging in size from clay to boulders. The various types of landslides are differentiated by rate and depositional features. Indeed, flow characteristics are observed from very slow-moving landslides (e.g., mud slide and mud flow) to very fast-moving landslides (e.g., debris avalanches and debris flows). From a geomechanical point of view, shear-rate-dependent shear strength should be examined in landslides. This paper presents the design of advanced ring-shear apparatus to measure the undrained shear strength of debris flow materials in Korea. As updated from conventional ring-shear apparatus, this apparatus can evaluate the shear strength under different conditions of saturation, drainage and consolidation. We also briefly discussed on the ring shear apparatus for enforcing sealing and rotation control. For the materials with sands and gravels, an undrained ring-shear test was carried out simulating the undrained loading process that takes place in the pre-existing slip surface. We have observed typical evolution of shear strength that found in the literature. This paper presents the research background and expected results from the ring-shear apparatus. At high shear speed, a temporary liquefaction and grain-crushing occurred in the sliding zone may take an important role in the long-runout landslide motion. Strength in rheology can be also determined in post-failure dynamics using ring-shear apparatus and be utilized in debris flow mobility.
