This paper is concerned with the engineering characteristics weathered mudstone soil in Pohang area. The crushability of weathered Boil can be described in terms of the ratio of surface area(Sw'/Sw). In this study, the characteristics of weathered mudstone soil was investigated by performing teat such as compaction. CBR, permeability, and grain size according to compaction energy. The results are found as follows : (1) In generally, the specific gravity of weathered mudstone soil is very small and optimum moisture content (OMC) is large and maximum dry density is small (2) The CBR value increases as the compaction energy increases, but this value decreses from D -2 compaction(26kg.cm/cm3). the swelling ratio increases the npaction energy to 20.6kg.cm/cm" and decreases in all compaction energy from 20.6kg.cm/cm3 (3) As the compaction energy is small, the change of permeability due to water content is large and the difference between minimum coefficient of permeability and coefficient of permeability at OMC is large, but the difference is small as the compaction energy increases (4) The decrease of permeability due to the decrease of void ratio and the increase of ratio of surface area is caused by the crush of particle due to the increase in compaction energy. Especially, the compaction energy is smaller, the change of the ratio of surface area to the coefficient of permeability is larger.rger.

The hammer-milled characteristics of waste wood materials such as lumber, plywood, particleboard(PB), MDF and railroad tic were investigated in this study. The physical and mechanical properties of recycled boards according to types of recycled particle and the mixing ratios were also studied. The hammer-milled, waste wood materials had the dimensional distributions suitable for the core layer panicle. Bending strengths of recycled boards (one layer) were shown in order of plywood, PB(laboratory-fabricated with particles used in the PB factory), lumber, tego film-overlaid plywood, MDF, waste railroad tie, PB(factory-made) and LPL-overlaid PB. Cured resin and creosote containing waste wood contributed to dimensional stability of reconstituted boards. Considering the mixing effects between lumber and plywood with recycled PB particle, lumber particle was contributive to bending strength, MOE and internal bond(IB) strength, whereas plywood particle was contributive to dimensional stability. The bending and IB strength of 3 layer boards composing only recycled waste wood particles in core layer of board were in order of lumber, plywood, PB and MDF. On the other hand, the thickness swelling was in order of PB, lumber, plywood and MDF. Bending strength of the 3 layer boards mixed with recycled PB-particle in the core layer had a decreasing tendency, as the mixing ratios of recycled PB-particles increased. The dimensional stability of 3 layer recycled board was improved as the mixing ratio of recycled PB-particle increased same as in one layer. Formaldehyde emission of boards fabricated with recycled PB-particles in the core layer of the PB was in the range of E2 grade (below 5.0mg/l).
In this study, a rockfill-dam material was investigated on its shear strength and compressibility by performing large-scaled triaxial and oedometer tests. The rockfill material was compacted at two different compaction levels and sheared in triaxial compression at three different confining stresses. Also, rockfill samples were prepared to have three different grain size distributions but the same dry density. Each sample with a given grain size distribution was then compressed one-dimensionally in a large-scaled oedometer cell with and without soaking. The rockfill samples exhibited slightly different shear behaviors with the varying compaction and confining stress levels. The increase in the compaction level changed the behavior from contractive to dilative. Dilation decreased gradually with increasing confining stress, resulting in reduction in the peak shear strength. The large-scaled oedometer test results showed that particle breakages increased with increasing average particle sizes of the samples. Comparing the samples with different gradations, a relatively well-graded sample exhibited lower compressibility. For saturated samples, slightly higher deformations were observed, compared to dry samples. The values of tangent constrained modulis for the dry samples were larger by about 10 to 20$\%$, on the average, than those for the saturated samples.
The purpose of 1,his study is to analyze the compression and strength charactefistics of the decomposed -weathered soil originating from biotite gneiss or fine grained gneiss sampled from Poidong, Seoul : to figure out the behavioural characteristics of the decomposed -weathered soil in accordance with mineral composition and origin by comparing experimental results of residual soils. originating from granites and sampled from Bulam, Andong and Kimchun area. A series of CIU, CID CKoV, CKoD tests were car lied out. Although weathered soils have different origin and mineral composition, the slope of the NCL A was similar. It was also shown that plastic strain ratio was about 85% mainly due to the particle crushing effect during compression. The Poidong soil showed strain softening phenomenon unlike the Kimchun and Andong soils. this implies that the behavioural characteristics are affected by the origin and the mineral composition of the soil particles. Moreover, it was found that the angle of the shear resistance$(\phi')$ was dependent on the mineral composition. On the oher hand, measured Af values of decomposed weathered soils were more than one regardless of the origin and the mineral composition.
Shale is considered as a source rock for conventional oil and gas exploration and development because shale is fine-grained detrital sedimentary rock which can preserve the organic matter better. Shale has a good sealing capacity for the petroleum trap due to its low permeability. Commercial recoveries of gas from shale in the North America based on the development of technologies of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing reveal that shale also function as a effective reservoir rock. Geochemical techniques to evaluate generation potential of the hydrocarbons from organic matter in the source rocks can be applied for the exploration of the shale gas resources. To evaluate shale gas resources, it is important to understand various geochemical processes and shale characteristics controlling generation, storage and estimation of shale gas reserves. In this paper, the generation mechanism of the oil and gas from organic matter is reviewed, and geochemical techniques which can be applied for the evaluation and characterization of shale gas are introduced.

The fine aggregates of below 2 mm size was fabricated using by the vertical furnace in which the aggregates could be sintered at floating state and its physical properties were analyzed. The liquid formed at the surface of specimens sintered at $1200{\sim}l300^{\circ}C$ induced a gas in core to expand so the denser shell and porous core could be produced. The C series specimen fabricated by crushing an extruded body had an irregular shape and sharp edges but those became spheroidized by bloating due to gas expansion inside. The fine aggregates fabricated in this study was as light as floating in the water and had an apparent density of $0.68{\sim}1.08$. The absorption rate was proportioned to a porosity showing that the pores in core was not closed completely. The properties of fine aggregates fabricated in vertical furnace were similar with those of in an electric muffle furnace but the sticking-together phenomenon by surface fusion was not occurred in the vertical furnace. The aggregates fabricated in this study had a little lower impact resistance than that of natural aggregate but satisfied the unit volume weight standard specified in KS.

The civil engineering properties for the coal fly ash produced from a power plant mixed with sintered powders made from the fly ash-clay slip system were measured and its applicability for the foundation soils was investigated. The F-slip whose dispersion state is 'not good' and C-slip which is re-flocculated by adding a flocculant to a well-dispersed slip were fabricated and then sintered. The sintered body made from C-slip had more uniform microstructure than that of F-slip, therefore, the bulk density and compressive strength were improved. The civil engineering properties such as compression index, compressive strength, permeability coefficient of fly ash were improved by mixing $0.84{\sim}2\;mm$ powders obtained by crushing a sintered body made from C-slip. Therefore, the applicability of mixed powders composing of fly ash and sintered body made from C-slip was confirmed to foundation soils due to its improved civil engineering properties.
The demand for LIBs with higher energy densities has increased continuously because the emergence of wider and more challenging applications including HEV and EV has became imperative. However, in the case of anode material, graphite is insufficient to meet this need. To meet such demand, several type of negative electrode materials like silicon, tin, SiO, and transition metal oxide have been investigated for the advanced lithium secondary batteries. Recently, lithium vanadium oxide, which has a layered structure, is assumed as one of the promising anode material as alternative of graphite. This material shows a high volumetric capacity, which is 1.5 times higher than that of graphite. However, relative low electrical conductivity and particle fracture, which results in the electrolyte decomposition and loss of electric contact between electrode, induce rapid capacity decay. In this report, we investigated the effect of electrolyte additive on the electrochemical characteristics of lithium vanadium oxide.
In this study, consolidation test and numerical analysis were performed with the aim of investigating the characteristics of consolidation behavior of mixed soil with the amount and particle shape of inserted materials. Mixed soil was made up of matrix (dredged clay) and inserted material (crashed oyster shell and/or sand). The concept of stress share ratio was introduced to evaluate the consolidation characteristics of mixed soils. And the finite differential numerical analysis was carried out by applying the Mikasa's consolidation theory. From the results of experiments and numerical analysis, it was verified that mixed soil consolidation behavior is affected by changes in inserted material. When a similar amount of granular material was inserted, the compressibility of the clay matrix of oyster shell mixed soil was smaller than that of sand mixed soil.

A large amount of radioactively-contaminated gravel can be produced on the demolition/restoration of facilities related the back end of fuel cycle. However, because of the lacking in basic knowledge for decontamination of radioactive-contami-nated gravel, this study has performed the basic tests using for soil-washing. To find effective decontamination condition, several experiments were carried out for the selection of optimal decontamination agents. Washing by 0.1 M nitric acid was proved to be more effective than that by distilled water or surfactant for decontamination of uranium-contaminated gravel. In addition, crushing/grinding of uranium-contaminated gravel prior to washing was contributed to increase in of removal efficiency of uranium and reduction of decontamination time. The smaller the sizes of crushed gravel was, the more the removal efficiency increased. Also, small the sized particles improved chances for meeting the clearance requirement of the treated gravel.
