  • Radiation exposures of an astronaut during the space travels to the International Space Station(ISS) of the Soyuz and the Moon of the Apollo, were calculated considering the altitude, boarding time, period of stay, kinds of spaceships and space suits. The calculated radiation exposures decrease dramatically according to the thickness of the shielding by the wall of the spaceships and by the space suits. For the space travel to the ISS of Soyuz at Low Earth orbit, the thickness of the spaceship required to optimally reduce the radiation exposure is 3 cm. For the Extravehicle Mobility Unit(EMU) the exposures are minimized at 4 cm of the aluminized Mylar and 5 cm of the Demron, respectively. The aluminized Mylar showed better radiation shielding than the Demron which contains the high Z materials. The radiation exposures of an astronaut were $4.2\times10^{-6}$ Sv for the ISS travel and $4.3\times10^{-5}$ Sv for the Moon explore. The high concentration of the high energy proton flux at the surface of the Moon results in high radiation exposure. The calculation scheme and results of this study can be used in the design of the shielding performance of a spaceship and space suits.

  • It is well known that volatile compounds including disinfection by-products as well as emissive dissolved gas in water can be removed effectively by air stripping. The micro-bubbles of flotation unit are so tiny as microns while the diameter of fine bubbles applied to air stripping is ranged from hundreds to thousands of micrometer. Therefore, the micro-bubbles in flotation can supply very wide specific surface area to transfer volatile matters through gas-liquid boundary. In addition, long emission time also can be gained to emit the volatile compound owing to the slow rise velocity of micro-bubbles in the flotation tank. There was a significant difference of the THMs species removal efficiency between air stripping and flotation experiments in this study. Moreover, the results of comparative experiments on the removal characteristics of THMs between air stripping and flotation revealed that the mass transfer coefficient, $K_La$ showed obvious differences. To overcome the limit of low removal efficiency of dissolved volatile compounds such as THMs in flotation process, the operation range of bubble volume concentration is required to higher than the operation condition of conventional particle separation.

  • Foam-type MFI zeolite catalyst was prepared by dispersing fine ($-0.2{\mu}m$) particles of MFI zeolite on silicalite foam. Catalytic cracking of n-octane was investigated over the foam-type catalyst and Delplot method was employed to interpret product compositions for deducing reaction mechanism. The Si/Al molar ratio of dispersed MFI zeolite was estimated 25 and its dispersed amount of silicalite foam was 25 wt%. Since the apparent density of the foam type catalyst was very low $0.11g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$, the catalyst loading amount could be varied from 0.02 g to 0.5 g without concerning pressure drop, providing a wide variance in the residence time of the reactants and products. The conversion and olefin yield in the catalytic cracking of n-octane increased with the catalyst loading. The product composition was very simple and could be explained by applying the protolytic cracking mechanism when the catalyst loading was small. Higher loading of the catalyst brought about further reactions of cracked products, accumulating lower olefin and paraffin with low reactivity in product stream and resulting in complex product composition.

  • Researches about NPS(Non-point Pollution Source) reduction have been widely carried out in recent years. A pilot channel-type constructed wetland (wet swale) was constructed in Rongyin area to treat stormwater generated from a green house agro-land of 22.7 ha. From 2006 to 2008, monitoring was conducted to evaluate its performance on the removal effect for organic pollutants as well as nutrients. Totally, sampling trips of 17 rainfall events were made and they covered most types of storm events in Korea. The channel-type constructed wetland have average removal efficiencies of 78.3~92.0%, 56.4~66.1%, 28.2~45.5% and 50.6~66.4% for SS, COD, TN and TP, respectively. According to four methods for estimating the removal efficiency, the average efficiencies of TSS, COD, TN and TP are 86.0%, 60.1%, 30.1% and 53.5%, respectively. From 2006 to 2008, annual efficiency improved due to infiltration potential increase. It was found that most of the pollutants removed in this channel type of wetland was particulate solids bound pollutants, which is assumed fact that it lacks of physico-chemical treatment conditions which are commonly observed in the retention type of constructed wetlands.

  • Nitrifier consortium entrapped in Ca and Ba-alginate beads were packed into two reactors and studied for removing ammonia-nitrogen in aquaculture system. The ammonia-nitrogen concentration of the influent was continually kept about 2 ppm. At the hydraulic residence time of 0.6 hours, ammonia-nitrogen removal amount of two reactors was about 52.6 and 51.0 g $NH_3-N/m^3/day$, respectively. The ability of adjusting to an impulsive leading which was happened according to variations of HRT was better at Ba-alginate reactor, but its discrepancy was not so large. At the respect of removing ammonium-nitrogen, two reactors showed the similar ability of treating recirculating water.

  • When polluted stream water was treated with biological aerated filter(BAF) in pilot plant, all operation with 90, 60, 45 and 30 min of EBCT at fixed $0.1m^3air/m^2min$ of aeration showed 80% or higher treatment efficiency of particle materials(SS, turbidity and Chl.-a) and 85% or higher efficiency of ammonia nitrogen removal. It was thought that, in case of BOD, biological stability may sufficiently be assured with BAF because grade III or IV inflow water was changed to grade I for outflow water. In case of $COD_{Mn}$, about 60% of removal efficiency was found. When the mechanism of the result was investigated, about 30% of COD materials was produced by algae clogged in the reactor. There was almost no biological decomposition because specific substrate utilization rate of algogenic organic materials were $0.0245mg{\cdot}COD_{Mn}/mg{\cdot}VSS{\cdot}day$, thus partial backwashing(washing the media in 1 m upper of the reactor once a day) was required. It is thought that elevation of removal rate about 10% of $COD_{Mn}$ and 5.5% of $BOD_5$ could be obtained with partial backwashing resulting in assurance of biologically more stable raw water and that saving backwashing water may be significant.

  • This study developed a simple model to investigate effects of important operating parameters on performance of a bubbling-bed adsorber and regenerator system collecting $CO_2$ from flue gas. The chemical reaction rate was used with mean particles residence time of a reactor to determine the extent of conversion in both adsorber and regenerator reactors. Effects of process parameters - temperature, gas velocity, solid circulation rate, moisture content of feed gas - on $CO_2$ capture efficiency were investigated in a laboratory scale process. The $CO_2$ capture efficiency decreased with increasing temperature or gas velocity of the adsorber. However, it increased with increasing the moisture content of the flue gas or the regenerator temperature. The calculated $CO_2$ capture efficiency agreed to the measured value reasonably well. However the present model did not agree well to the effect of the solid circulation rate on $CO_2$ capture efficiency. Better understanding on contact efficiency between gas and particles was needed to interpret the effect properly.

  • The vertical profiles of natural 210Pb, 210Po and 234Th activities were measured for the upper 100 m of water column at three stations in the middle region of the Korean East Sea during May 1992. And the distribution of these radionuclides was discussed associated with the formation of warm eddy or water mass. The main thermocline was maintained between the depth of 50 and 100 m at the southern station (Sta. A1), and between the depth of 10 to 50 m at the coastal station of Sockcho (Sta. B10). Contrastingly, a main thermocline at Sta. A10, which locates near the center of warm eddy, was observed below 230 m depth. Between 50 and 220 m depth of Sta. A10 is there a relatively homogeneous water mass of 10.1${\pm}$0.5$^{\circ}C$, which is significantly higher in temperature and lower in nutrient than the other two stations. It seems to be due to sinking of the warm surface water in which nutrients were completely consumed. Both 210Pb and 210Po show the highest concentration at Sta. A1 and the lowest at Sta. B10 among the three stations. Also, the 210Pb activity is generally higher in the upper layer than in the lower layer, while 210Po activity represents the reversed pattern at all three stations. At Sta. A1 and Sta. B10, the activities of 210Po relative to its parent 210Pb were deficient in the water column above the main thermocline, but were excess below the thermocline. However, the station near the center of warm eddy(Sta. A10), shows no excess of 210Po in the depths below 50 m, although its defficiency is found in the upper layer like the other stations. At Sta. A1 and b10. 234Th activities are slightly lower in the surface mixed layer than in the deeper region However, at Sta. A10, 234Th activity in the upper 30 m is higher than below 50 m or in the same depth of the other stations, probably because of the high concentration of particulate matter. The residence time of 210Po in the surface mixed layer at Sta. A10 is 0.4 year, much shorter than at the other two stations(about one year). Above 100 m depth, the residence times of 234Th range from 18 to 30 other two stations(about on year). Above 100 m depth, the residence times of 234Th range from 18 to 30 days at all stations, without significant regional variation. The percentages of recycled 210Po within the thermocline are 39% and 92% at Sta. A1 and Sta. B10, respectively. Much higher value at Sta. B10 may be due to a thin thickness of the mixed layer as well as the slower recycling rate of 210Po in the main thermocline.

  • BACKGROUND: Anaerobic digestion process is recently adapted technology for treatment of organic waste such as animal manure because the energy embedded in the waste can be recovered from the waste while the organic waste were digested. Ever increased demand for consumption of meat resulted in the excessive use of antimicrobials to the livestocks for more food production. Most antimicrobials administered to animals are excreted through urine and feces, which might highly affect the biological treatment processes of the animal manure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of antimicrobials on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion process and to clarify the interactions between antimicrobials and anaerobes. METHODS AND RESULTS: The experiment was consisted of two parts 1) batch test to investigate the effects of individual antibiotic compounds on production of methane and VFAs(volatile fatty acids), and removal efficiency of organic matter, and 2) the continuous reactor test to elucidate the effects of mixed antimicrobials on the whole anaerobic digestion process. The batch test showed no inhibitions in the rate of methane and VFAs production, and the rate of organic removal were observed with treatment at 1~10 mg/L of antimicrobials while temporary inhibition was observed at 50 mg/L treatment. In contrast, treatment of 100 mg/L antimicrobials resulted in continuous decreased in the rate of methane production and organic removal efficiency. The continuous reactor test conduced to see the influence of the mixed antimicrobials showed only small declines in the methane production and organic matter removal when 1~10 mg/L of combined antimicrobials were applied but this was not significant. In contrast, with the treatment of 50 mg/L of combined antimicrobials, the rate of organic removal efficiency in effluent decreased by 2~15% and the rate of biogas production decreased by 30%. CONCLUSION(s): The antimicrobials remained in the animal manure might not be removed during the anaerobic digestion process and hence, is likely to be released to the natural ecosystem. Therefore, the efforts to decline the usage of antimicrobials for animal farming would be highly recommended.
