Grain size analysis have been made for the carbonate-detrital mixed sediments on the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of Korea. The detrital components are well-sorted with mean grain size between 2-3 phi. The detrital components are thought to be deposited in the beach environment during the glacial times when the sea level was low, representing typical 'relict' sediments. Most of the carbonate components consist of shell fragments, and are deeply weathered. They are also interpreted as the relict components that were deposited in the shallow marine environment. The carbonate fraction are coarser-grained and poorly sorted compared to the detrital component. The carbonate components are thought to have experienced the continuous environmental control of fragmentation and selective size sorting after the deposition.

Fine particle classification was performed using products obtained from primary classification process after flotation for efficient application of tailing. The cut size increased with decreasing input pressure from 0.1 MPa to 0.3 MPa and increasing pulp density from 5% to 15% using 2-inch hydrocyclone. The median sizes of overflow and underflow were $6.56{\mu}m$ and $55.45{\mu}m$, respectively at 0.3 MPa with 5% pulp density. The imperfection became closed to ideal separation with increasing the pulp density and decreasing the input pressure. The water content decreased with increasing the pulp density, but the effect of input pressure could be ignored. The water content of underflow was 27.9% at 0.3 MPa with 15% pulp density.
Fly ash powders were refined and separated into fine and coarse size by multi-air classification, and each particle was used for synthesizing mullite and zeolite. Mullite was prepared by sintering the mixture of fine fly ash with mean size of 6.5 $\mu$m and $A1_2$$O_3$powder at above $1450^{\circ}C$. Zeolite was synthesized through hydrothermal reaction with coarse fly ash mean size of $56.3\mu$m in 3.5 M NaOH solution at $120^{\circ}C$. The whole range of particle size can be recycled through size classification into fine and coarse fractions, which are used for syntheses of inorganic materials.

Grain size analysis was conducted for a total of 402 surface sediments collected from 67 sites along three (upper, middle, and lower) transects corresponding to the high-, mid-, and low-intertidal zone of beach on the Sinjado, Nakdong River estuary in Nov. 2005 and May 2006. Sinja-do beach sediments showed uni-modal grain size distributions, in which the mode of $3.0{\phi}$ was dominant in 2005 whereas the mode of $2.5{\phi}$ in 2006. This coarsening trend was more remarkable in the western side of beach as well as in the mid- and low-intertidal zone. In this study, we focused on investigating characteristics of sediment size changes on the basis of transect data that differ in tidal elevation. For this purpose, a statistical test was applied for transect by transect comparison of grain size parameters such as mean, sorting, and skewness. Mean values between middle and lower transect, sorting values between upper and lower transect, and skewness values over the beach reflected statistically significant temporal changes. Also, mean and skewness parameters showed an inverse relationship which was more stronger in 2006 than in 2005. Temporal changes in Sinja-do beach sediments resulted in decrease of mean and sorting values but increase of skewness values, intensifying the inverse relationship between mean and skewness parameters.

The bedform stability diagram indicates the shape and size of bedforms that will occur to a given grain size and flow velocity. The diagram has been constructed from experimental data which have been mostly acquired by flume experiments. Generally, the flume experiments have been performed on well sorted sediments with unimodal grain size distribution, in order to understand relationship between grain size and flow velocity. According to the diagram, a ripple structure initiates to be formed from lower flow regime flat bed, as the flow velocity increases on the surface of fine-sand or medium-sand sediments. This study aims to verify that the experimental result of bedform stability diagram will be reproduced in our flume experimental systems, and also to confirm that the result is consistent not only on well-sorted sand sediments but also on poorly-sorted sand sediments with bimodal grain size distribution. The experimental results in this study show that initiation of 2D or 3D ripple structure on poorly-sorted sand sediments requires higher flow velocity and shear stress than those for initiation of the structure on well-sorted sand sediments. In general, carbonate sediments are characterized by poor sorting due to inactive hydraulic sorting and bimodal grain size distribution with allochems and matrices. The results suggest that the carbonate depositional system possibly need a higher flow velocity for initial formation of 2D or 3D bedform structures. The reason might be the fact that pulling off and lifting of a grain in poorly sorted sediments require more energy due to sorting, friction, stabilization, armour effects, and their complex interaction. This preliminary study warrants additional experiments under various conditions and more accurate analysis on the relationship between formation of bedforms and grain size distribution.

The circularity and particle size distribution of products obtained from dry classification after circularity tests using a high-intensity mixer were investigated to evaluate the use of domestic graphite concentrate as a lithium-ion battery material. At a rotor speed of 3,000 rpm, the particle size and circularity of the concentrated sample and product were unchanged. The circularity increased and particle size decreased when the rotor speeds were increased to 6,000 rpm, 10,000 rpm, and 12,000 rpm and the operating time was increased. For instance, the circularity increased from 0.870 to 0.936 when the rotor speed was increased from 3,000 rpm to 12,000 rpm for an operating time of 10 min. After the circularity test, dry classification was performed, wherein the circularity of the coarse particles was found to have increased to 0.947. Round particles were observed in the SEM images, indicating that high circularity was successfully achieved.
The use of lithium-ion batteries increases significantly with the rapid spread of electronic devices and electric vehicle and thereby an increase in the amount of waste batteries is expected in the near future. Therefore, studies are continuously being conducted to recover various resources of cathode active material (Ni, Co, Mn, Li) from waste battery. In order to recover the cathode active material, black mass is generally recovered from waste battery. The general process of recovering black mass is a waste battery collection - discharge - dismantling - crushing - classification process. This study focus on the crushing/classification process among the processes. Specifically, the particle size distribution of various samples at each crushing/classification step were evaluated, and the particle shape of each particle fraction was analyzed with a microscope and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)-EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectrometer). As a result, among the black mass particle, fine particle less than 74 ㎛ was the mixture of cathode and anode active material which are properly liberated from the current metals. However, coarse particle larger than 100 ㎛ was present in a form in which the current metal and active material were combined. In addition, this study developed a PBM(Population Balance Model) system that can simulate two-species mixture sample with two different crushing properties. Using developed model, the breakage parameters of two species was derived and predictive performance of breakage distribution was verified.
In this study, the particle size of Si polycrystals was controlled through wet-sedimentation method, and changes in the capacity and cyclic characteristics of the Si anode material according to the particle size were observed. After wet-sedimentation of Si particles pulverized by a vibration mill, the non-uniform particle distribution of Si was uniformly controlled. The d50 of a sample in which Si was sedimented for 24 hours decreased to 0.50 ㎛. As a result of the electrochemical characteristic analysis, the Rct value representing the resistance in the electrode was significantly reduced due to the decrease in particle size. The unclassified Si sample exhibited a discharge capacity of 2,869 mAh/g in the first cycle, and decreased to 85.7 mAh/g after 100 cycles. The sample in which Si was classified for 24 hours showed a capacity of 3,394 mAh/g initially, and maintained a capacity of 1,726 mAh/g after 100 cycles. As the size of the Si particles decreased, the discharge capacity increased and the cycle life was also increased.
