  • A tapered impedance-matching line is designed by an inverse scattering method for the one-dimensional medium. The phase compensation factor(PCF) is introduced in order to reduce the error in the inverse scattering process to reconstruct the permittivity profile. By estimating the permittivity profile of the virtual one-dimensional dielectric medium whose reflection characteristic is the same as that of the specified matching line, the matching line is synthesized. The method can be used to design impedance-matching lines with arbitrary passband characteristics without any equivalent circuit analysis. The inevitable errors in the method using the time-domain reflection coefficient can be avoided by using the frequency-domain reflection coefficient.

  • The piezoelectric composites had many advantages in comparison with conventional piezoelectric ceramics and piezopolymers for ultrasonic transducers used in NDT and in medical ultrasionic imaging. The electromechanical coupling coefficient should be high and the acoustic impedance should be low in these applications. However, the cross-coupling with spurious oscillations caused by laterally running plate waves exhibited complex motions in the surface of piezoelectric composites with coarse lateral spatial scale. The thickness mode electromechanical coupling coefficient of 1-3type of piezoelectric compoistes were 0.36 to 0.64, and the acoustic impedance of them were 9.8 to 22.7 MRayl. The lateral resonance frequency of 1-3 type piezoelectric composites shifted to high frequency region with decreasing lateral spatial scale.

  • In this paper, all the materials constants of the PMN-32%PT single crystals grown by the solid state crystal growth method were measured by the resonance method. PMN-PT crystals of tetragonal symmetry have six elastic constants, three piezoelectric constants and two dielectric constants for their independent material constants. These materials constants were extracted from six sets of crystal samples of each different geometry to have different vibration modes respectively. Measured results showed that the crystal has larger electromechanical coupling factor k/sub 33/ (∼86%) and piezoelectric constant d/sub 33/ (∼1200pC/N) than conventional piezoceramics. Validity of the measurement was confirmed through comparison of the results with the impedance spectrum from finite element analysis of the samples and the results measured with a commercial do meter.

  • The cavity resonator is one of the widely used components in the microwave applications. The unloaded Q, the resonant frequency, and the coupling factor are basic parameters of a cavity. A simple unloaded Q factor measurement procedure of a cavity is proposed in a lossy coupling. The equivalent circuit of a cavity with coupling loss at near the resonant frequency is presented. The coupling loss resistance was found by the measurement of a cavity impedance. The cavity impedance compensated coupling loss was redrawn on the Smith Chart. The loaded Q and coupling factor were obtained based on the compensated impedance locus and then the unloaded Q factor was calculated. To verify the proposed procedure, the cavity with lossless coupling was measured. The two measurement results in the lossy and lossless coupling agree well. The results confirm the proposed procedure is valid.

  • We have investigated on the development of 2-2 type piezocomposites that have better piezoelectric activity and lower acoustic impedance than those of conventional piezoceramics. In this study, we have investigated the piezoelectric and acoustic properties of 2-2 type piezocomposites sensor which was fabricated using dice-and-fill technique for the different volume fraction of PZT. The specific acoustic impedance of 2-2 type piezocomposites decreased linearly when PZT volume fraction was decreased. The resonance characteristics measured by an impedance analyzer(HP4194A) were similar to the analysis of finite element method (FEM). The resonance characteristics and the electromechanical coupling factor were the best when the volume fraction PZT was 0.6. It also showed the highest result from the standpoint of sensitivity, bandwidth and ring-down property and so on at the same condition. The specific characteristics show that the 2-2 type piezocomposites turned out to be superior to the ultrasonic sensor composed by single phase PZT.

  • In this paper, a novel impedance tuner using a directional coupler is proposed. The design topology is analyzed by signal flow graph(SFG) and shows advantages compared with conventional single and double stub methods from the view points of easy implementation and wide tuning range, respectively. This impedance tuner consists of ten switches and its $2^{10}$ tuning points are distributed uniformly on the whole Smith chart. The measured maximum magnitude of the reflection coefficient is 0.9. And the fabricated impedance tuner has a wide bandwidth from 1.8 to 2.2 GHz. Using this impedance tuner, we did a load-pull measurement of a power transistor.

  • This paper presents the effect of temperature on the impedance-based damage monitoring of steel-bolt connections using wireless impedance sensor nodes. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. First, a temperature-compensated damage monitoring scheme that includes a temperature compensation model and damage detection method is described. The temperature compensation model is designed by analyzing the linear regressions between the temperatures and impedance signatures. The correlation coefficient of the impedance signatures is selected as the damage index to monitor the damage occurrence in the target structures. Second, a wireless impedance sensor node is described for the design of the hardware components and embedded software. Finally, the performance of the temperature-compensated impedance-based damage monitoring scheme is evaluated for detecting a loose bolt in the steel-bolt connections on a lab-scale steel girder under various temperatures.

  • The paper discusses a data processing methodology that derives a three dimensional porosity volume information from the 3-D seismic dataset. The methodology consists of preprocessing and inversion procedures. The purpose of the preprocessing is balancing the amplitudes of seismic traces by using reflectivity series derived from sonic and density logs. There are eight sonic logs are available in the study area; therefore, we can compute only 8 balance functions. The balance function for every seismic trace was derived from these 8 balance functions by kriging. In order to derive a wide-band acoustic impedance --similar to the one can be derived from a sonic log- from a band-limited reflection seismogram, we need to recover missing low- and high-frequency information of the seismic trace. For that Purpose we use the autoregressive method.

  • In this paper, we analyzed a medium voltage power line characteristics considering the skin effect for high speed data transmission. Medium power-line characteristics impedance was obtained by the S-parameter method which is used in high frequency band. Power line channel characteristics was measured using it designed coupler, it is a wide band coupler between medium powe-line and measurement system. Attenuation characteristics along the frequency was decreased linearly when skin effect was considered but attenuation characteristics along the frequency was decreased linearly when skin effect was not considered. Impedance was showed lower and lower in proportional to frequency, and variation was decreased in proportional to frequency.

  • The development of a technique that can monitor the cracks, which is one of the typical types of damage, is necessary to secure the structural safety of elastically restrained cantilever-type beams with a tip mass that is used widely in infrastructure. Impedance techniques have been actively researched to detect cracks, and the cracks were estimated mainly by experimentally investigating the relationship between the crack and impedance signal. This study examined the correlation between the change in the impedance signals due to the crack, and the natural frequency obtained analytically. After updating the analysis model for the intact beam, the impedance signal was measured while gradually inflicting cracks in the cantilever-type beam, and the damage index was obtained. The results were compared with the natural frequencies calculated from the updated analysis model to investigate the correlation. A close correlation was observed between the experimentally obtained impedance damage index, and the analytically calculated natural frequency. Using this correlation, the structural characteristics could be evaluated more accurately from the damage estimation results, and the behavior of the structure could be predicted effectively using the analysis model.
