  • As the global warming has been influenced on various sectors including agriculture, fisheries and health, it is essential to project more accurate future climate for an assessment of climate change impact and adaptation strategy. The purpose of this study is to examine the boundary changes in the subtropical climate region in South Korea using observed 30-year(1971-2000) data and projected 100-year data based on the IPCC SRES A1B emission scenario. We have selected Trewartha's climate classification among various climate classification, defining the subtropical climate region as the region with monthly mean temperature $10^{\circ}C$ or higher during 8-12 months. By observed data, the subtropical climate region was only limited in Jeju-do and the farmost southern coastal area(Busan, Tongyeong, Geoje, Yeosu, Wando, Mokpo) of South Korea. The future projected climate region for the period of 2071-2100 included have shown that subtropical climate region extended to most of stations except for the ares of Taebaeksan and Sobaeksan Mountains.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changing pattern of forest insect communities in 2013 after harvesting of forest in 2012, and provide a basic data for the method of efficient management for preservation of forest biodiversity. Five types of cutting method in pine tree forest were selected to compare the coleopteran insect communities at Hajang-myeon, Gangwon-do, Korea, in 2013. In this study, we investigated the effects of timber harvest with green-tree retention on coleopteran insects. They were sampled with Lindgren funnel traps for five experimental sites during July to October, 2013. A total of 1,112 individuals in 156 species of 40 families by Lindgren funnel traps. Also, the analysis of coleopteran insects community was performed. Although the difference of density is not prominent among the survey areas in the early stages, it was appeared a tendency to increase in density and abundance of insects in the experimented sites excluding the control areas. Among them, strip clear-cutting area showed a increase of density and abundance in this study.

  • Seasonal changes in free arginine concentration in Pinus radiata buds were studied in four clones from May, 1974 to June, 1975. The buds were from the tips of first order branches which had flowered the previous year, and the significant findings were as follows: (1) In general, arginine concentration in the buds of the four clones showed the highest peaks from December to March, a period spanning the time of flower initiation, and the lowest levels in Angust and September. (2) The timing of individual arginine peaks during the period of flower initiation matched roughly the timing of initiation of several female cone clusters, as determined from Clone 7 which characteristically initiates three cycles of female cones on its leading shoot. (3) The heavy-flowering clones showed higher arginine concentration than ther poorer flowering ones, especially at the time of flower initiation.

  • The Working Unit of Forestry Management Cooperatives has been organized by the training and extention service center since 1984 so as to take charge of forestry work of Forestry Management Cooperatives, and this study has been carried out in order to find the problem of Working Unit of Forestry Management Cooperatives, and to show how to solve it in the future. We analyzed a material gained by the immediate questionnaires to 33 members of 4 Working Unit of Forestry Management Cooperatives in Ulsan-Kun, and 10 members of Working Unit of Forestry Management Cooperatives in Jinan-Kun between July and August in 1993. Later, we found that there was an almost inactive Working Unit caused by the insufficient work amount, which resulted in inefficient skill and forestry work due to leave of the skilled forestry worker. Though the government concentrates on bringing up the Working Unit centered by the specialized laborer, it is concluded that bringing up the Working Unit should consider local labor market, organization of agriculture and forestry, organization of labor, level of wage, and the amount of forestry work.

  • Aspen demand has increased recently in the Great Lakes region in the United States. Since aspen has moved into the region in late 1800's, its growing stock has increased so as to change forestry industry of the Lake States. Intensive timber harvesting and biomass removal may cause nutrient depletion, especially on nutrient-poor sites. Forest nutrients and nutrient cycling were investigated in aspen stands of 7-10, 27-33, and 41-42 year-old growing on sandy soils in Minnesota. Nutrients added to the aspen stands by atmospheric deposition and soil weathering were efficiently absorbed and stored in the tree biomass. Aboveground biomass increased from $24.4t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at young stands to $139.2t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at mature stands. Nutrients accumulated in the tree biomass showed same magnitude of difference. Nutrients added to the site through atmospheric deposition were in the order of Ca, N, K, Mg, and P. Annual litterfall was greater in older stands. However, the amount of nutrients returned by litterfall was not significantly different among stand ages due to the greater nutrient contents in the litterfall of young stands. Litter decomposition and nutrient release rates were greater at young stands than at older stands. Likewise, nutrient availability was higher in young aspen stands and became lower as the stands grew older. Nutrient leaching loss was minimal at all stand ages. Soil N mineralization was greater at young stands than at older stands. Nutrient cycling process was facilitated in young aspen stands with an increased level of available nutrients, Based on the estimations of nutrient balance and nutrient removal by harvesting, Ca was the most critical element which was likely to be depleted if aspen stands are intensively harvested with short rotations.

  • Structure and dynamics of Pinus densiflora community in Mt. Kaya were studied to provide the information needed for management of Pinus densiflora forest in the southern inland of Korea. Stratification structure of Pinus densiflora community in the lower and middle slope consisted of tree layer(10~15m), subtree layer(4~10m), shrub layer(1~4m), and herb layer(below 1m), while in the rock zone of ridge and top area consisted of tree layer(7~10m), subtree layer(2~7m), shrub layer(1~2m), and herb layer(below 1m). According to the diameter distribution of tree species in Pinus densiflora community, secondary Pinus densiflora forest will gradually decline. Its forest may be replaced by Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, C. cordata, and Fraxinus rhychophylla in the lower slope, and by Quercus mongolica in the middle slope. Pinus densiflora forest has its seedlings and saplings in ridge and top area, so it may be sustained. By taking cores from Pinus densiflora trees in research area, it could be obtained that in the lower and middle slope, age of Pinus densiflora forest was about 80~90 years old. When the age of its trees was about 72~80 years old, withering trees of standing dead occurred. Disturbance regime of Pinus densiflora community in Mt. Kaya consisted of standing dead, uprooting and limbfall, these were 70.6%, 17.6% and 11.8% respectively. It takes about 100~110 years for advance growth of Pinus densiflora in ridge and top area to reach tree layer. During the period, it has twice chances of disturbance in standing dead. Annual diameter growth of Pinus densiflora was 2.45~2.9mm in the lower and middle slope, while it was 1.75mm in ridge and top region, by measuring cores.

  • Systematic and efficient forestry management is required because of the long-term low profitability of timber production and forest products. In this situation, non-timber forest products can be the solution to secure stable sources of income for workers in the forestry field. However, the existing studies for non-timber forest products focus on effective production and economic analysis and provide plans for increasing the income and improving the marketing system. Therefore, this research intends to analyze the spatial distribution as well as quantitative concentration of non-timber forest production. To achieve this goal, this study examined the regional concentration and dispersion of non-timber forest production in 2001, 2007, and 2014 using the coefficient of localization(CL) and location quotient(LQ) and investigated the change in spatial distribution using spatial statistics. The production of chestnuts generally showed a concentrated pattern in 2014 based on the outputs of the CL and LQ, but the result of spatial autocorrelation indicated a decrease in the spatial concentration. In addition, astringent persimmon showed more concentration from the output of CL than oak mushroom, but Moran's I suggests the opposite. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the spatial distribution to understand and improve the marketing system and intensify the production of forest products.

  • Taxonomic distribution of ecto- and endomycorrhizae among woody species growing in Korea was studied and their distribution was compared with foreign literature, Most of root samples were collected from Central Branch Station of forest Research Institute in Gwangneung, Gyonggido. A total of 32 families, 63 genera, 102 species were examined. Ectomycorrhizae were observed in the following 13 general of Pinaceae (Pinus Larix, Picea, Abies), Salicaceae (Populus, salix), Betulace (Alnus, Betula, Carpinus, Corpylus), Fagaceae(Quercus, Casianea), and Tiliaceae (Tilia), Endomycorrhizae (vesicular-arbuscular) were observed in Populus and the rest of the 49 genera. Rhus was the only genus which did not have either ecto- or endomycorrhizae, while foreign literature listed following genera having both mycorrhizal types: Juniperus, Cupressus, Populus, Salix, Juglans, Alnus, Ulmus, Malus, Pyrus, and Tilia. Juniperus, Ulmus, Pyrus, and Acer which were reported to have facultative ectomycorrhizae were free of ectomycorrhizae, Some morphological characteristics of endomycorrhizae are shown in photogrphs and discussed.

  • Outdoor cuttings studies on two coniferous species, pitch pine and needle fir, have been made at Suwon, Korea extending from March to early May, 1956. The purpose of these studies was to find the effects of ages of parent trees, topophysis, dilute hormone solution treatments and the time at which the cuttings were collected on the rooting response of the cuttings. On September 2, rooting results were examined. Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) The total of 1335 cuttings were collected from 3- and 10-year old trees. The cuttings treated were planted on March 13 and April 20. 1. In the cuttings collected from 3-year-old seedlings, the best result (34 percent rooted) was obtained by treating ends of cuttings with a mixture of 50 ppm IBA and 50 ppm NAA. 2. No rooting was observed in lammas shoots. 3. The cuttings from 3-year-old seedlings gave better rooting than those from 10-year-old trees. 4. The root origins were developed from the lower part of the cutting and the cut surface. Needle fir (Abies holophylla) One hundred twenty-five cuttings were collected from a 30-year-old tree. The cuttings treated with any one of four mixed hormone solutions were planted on March 23. 1. Fifteen cuttings out of 75 cuttings from the lower half of the crown were rooted. The cuttings obtained from the upper half of the crown did not root at all. 2. The cuttings treated by the hormone solution made up of 20 ppm IAA, 20 ppm IBA, 20 ppm NAA, 20 ppm thiamine and 5 percent sucrose gave the best rooting (22 percent). 3. All roots originated from callus tissues and irregularly arranged parenchymatous tissues near the cut base.

  • This research is to investigate the four years growth mountain-cultivated ginseng ripened twenty-two weeks into four years fermented persimmon vinegar (tentatively: Sansamcho) ingestion on obese-related factors during dietary control. The Sansamcho was ingested orally, two times a day, after every meal for six weeks to the male rats. Groups were divided into the control (CON), the restricted diet (RD), and the weight cycling (WC). And, each groups has its own sub-groups as the -control (-CON), 2.5 times diluted Sansamcho ingestion (-MPV2.5), and 5.0 times diluted Sansamcho ingestion (-MPV5.0) groups, respectively. The number of rat was consisted of seven in each group. After six weeks rearing periods was done, abdominal fats (retroperitoneal fat, mesentery fat, and epididymal fat) and energy metabolic-related protein (AMPK: AMP-activated protein kinase; PPAR-${\alpha}$: peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-${\alpha}$; and CPT-1: carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1) were weighed and analyzed. Amount of stored fat was significantly or tended to decrease by Sansamcho ingestion. In addition, sum of fats increasing were suppressed by the material. On the contrary, energy metabolism-related protein expression was significantly increased or tended to increase by Sansamcho ingestion. This results suggested that increased energy metabolism using Sansamcho was restrained effectively visceral fat store by high-fat diet and/or dietary control. In other words, it has a good function to suppress weight cycling which is the most insoluble problem. Therefore, the fusion material, Sansamcho, may expect to utilize as the obese-suppression-food.
