  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent and the nature of biological nursing science education for clinical nurses in general hospital. Methods: Five advanced general hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province were conveniently sampled. Contents of education for nurses conducted by the hospital nursing department from January 1 to December 31 of 2015 were collected. Contents of education included biological nursing science and the scope of inclusion and time of assignment were analyzed. Results: A total of 271 cases of nursing education data were collected and 223 cases were analyzed after excluding 48 cases whose contents were not confirmed. Biological nursing science was included in the contents of education for 117 cases (52.5%), but not for 106 cases (47.5%). Regarding the frequency of the biological nursing science education contents, 'pathophysiology'was the most frequently included (n= 286), followed by 'structure and function of the human body' (n= 191), 'mechanisms and effects of drugs' (n= 114) and 'clinical microbiology' (n= 43). Conclusion: Results of this study confirmed that the education for clinical nurses included a lot of biological nursing science related contents. These results can be used as basis for the development of curriculum and training course for nurses.

  • DEXA, as the standard areal bone mineral density (aBMD) measurement method, often shows an insuficient correlation between aBMDs of the measured bones and referring bones and is inaccurate due to the mass effect. In contrast, quantitative computer tomography (QCT), as a volumetric BMD (vBMD) measurement method, is being advanced so that it uses less radiation before, owing to improved CT device and computer imaging technology. Because dual-energy CTs can modulate the image signals showing tumor or specific chemicals as well as the ability to measure vBMD, they are expanding their application. For pre-checking vBMD of surgeon-specific bone volume at implantation candidate sites, a finite element creation-based local vBMD measurement technique was developed. The local vBMD measurement function for surgeon-specific shape volumes will be added to clinical imaging systems.

  • This study is a descriptive study to analyze the hand washing practice of nurses working in clinic applying health belief model. This research involved 162 clinical nurse at G city. The data were collected from Sep 1, 2017 to Oct 31, 2017. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test, 1-way ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis, where p-values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant by using SPSS 20.0. The overall practice of hand washing by general subjects were high 3.1 in all subjects, but there was no statistically significant difference. Health beliefs about hand washing practice according to general characteristics showed significant difference in perceived benefits (p<0.05), and there was a significant difference in perceived benefits and perceived barriers in age(p<0.05). In regard to the correlation among the subfactor of health beliefs, benefits had a statistically significant negative correlation to barriers and, positively correlated to cues to action. The results of this study suggest that continuing education of infection management in hospitals considering health beliefs about proper hand washing training will enhance hand washing practice.

  • A 69 year-old woman was admitted with sudden left facial weakness. She had no other neurologic deficit, except for left peripheral type facial palsy. She had a presumptive diagnosis of Bell's palsy. The blink test was indicative of left facial neuropathy due to left medullary lesion. Diffusion weighted (DWI) brain MRI demonstrated high signal signal lesion in left dorsolateral ponto-medullary junction. Apperant diffusion coefficient (ADC) brain MRI showed low signal lesion in the same area. We present an unusual case of ipsilateral peripheral facial palsy in dosolateral ponto-medullary infarction without other neurologic deficits.

  • Although lipoma is the most common soft-tissue tumor, accounting for up to one half of all soft-tissue tumors, intra-articular synovial lipomas are rarely seen. Occasional cases of intra-articular lipoma arborescens have been reported. However, true intra-articular synovial lipomas should be differentiated from other similar lipomatoid conditions such as lipoma arborescens, which are different pathologic entities and show different clinical presentations. This article presents the case of a patient who had an intra-articular synovial lipoma of the knee joint.

  • Background: Multidisciplinary team care (MTC) is a collaborative approach to treatment plan and ongoing care. We aimed to evaluate the clinical effect of MTC on the regulation of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) complications in dialysis patients. Methods: This retrospective observational study was approved by the institutional review board. Among patients who have undergone dialysis at admission, the patients admitted to the nephrology ward were allocated to MTC group, and the others to usual care (UC) group. The MTC group had collaborative care by nephrologists, nurses, pharmacists, and nutritionists. The endpoints were the regulation of corrected calcium (cCa) and phosphate (P), the percent of patients in target level of cCa-P product ($cCa{\times}P$), and the prescription rate of non-calcium based P-binders. Results: A total of 163 patients were included from January to December 2009. A significant difference was shown in the percentage of patients in target $cCa{\times}P$ level at admission (MTC vs. UC, 81.40% vs. 91.67%; P = 0.038), but there was no significant difference at discharge. During admission, the cCa and P levels of patients in only UC group were significantly changed. In addition, compared with UC group, patients in MTC group were more likely prescribed appropriate P-binders, when they had higher $cCa{\times}P$ levels than $55mg^2/dL^2$ (P <0.001). Conclusion: It was found that MTC had beneficial effect on improving the regulation of CKD-MBD and the appropriate phosphate binder uses. Therefore, application of the MTC is anticipated to enhance quality of clinical care in chronic diseases.
