  • The current study examined the relations between sixth-grade elementary school children's perceptions of daily hassles, optimistic thinking, and subjective well-being. This study also investigated the moderating effect of optimistic thinking on the relationship between daily hassles and subjective well-being. A total of 474 sixth-grade elementary school children participated in this study. First, children's daily hassles were negatively related to optimistic thinking and subjective well-being. As children perceived higher levels of daily hassles, they showed lower levels of optimistic thinking and subjective well-being. Children's optimistic thinking was positively related to subjective well-being. Second, children's optimistic thinking moderated the relations between daily hassles and subjective well-being. Specifically, for children with higher levels of optimistic thinking, their subjective well-being decreased with increasing levels of daily hassles related to parents and teachers. However, for children with lower levels of optimistic thinking, there was no relation between daily hassles and subjective well-being. These findings suggest that optimistic thinking could be an important means by which we could improve children's subjective well-being, especially when they experience higher levels of daily hassles.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to examine the relationships among daily hassles, social support, entrapment and mental health status in relation to gender in university students. Methods: Data were collected via a self- administered questionnaire from 118 male and 98 female college students in Kangwon province. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in daily hassles, entrapment and depression between male and female group. Also, there were significant relationship between entrapment and mental health status (i.e. depression, anxiety, hostility, somatization) in both groups. In male students, internal entrapment was the significant predictor of depression and anxiety, and external entrapment was the significant predictor of hostility and somatization whereas, in female students external entrapment was the significant predictor of depression, and internal entrapment was the significant predictor of anxiety, hostility and somatization. Conclusion: These results suggest that entrapment is an important factor for psychological maladaptation due to stressful life events. Therefore, strategies that reduce perception of entrapment according to gender should be developed for psychological adaptation.

Methods: Two hundred sixty five university students were gathered from the undergraduate classes. Data were collected through self-reported question- naires which included daily life stress scale, self-efficacy scales, hardiness scales, and health behavior scales. Results: The daily life stress level had a maximum score of 4 with a mean score of 2.09 and the mean score of health behavior was 2.56. A negative correlation exists among daily life stress, self-efficacy, and health behavior. The self-efficacy is positively correlated with the health behavior. According to the hardiness factor, health behavior is positively correlated with hardiness. In the subareas, health behavior is positively correlated with control, commitment, and challenge. The self- efficacy factor was positively correlated with challenge. Conclusions: In conclusion, based onthe results of this study, both self-efficacy and hardiness are useful concepts in reducing the stress level and in increasing the health promoting behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program based on both self-efficacy and hardiness.

  • This study aimed to investigate measures which could reduce the daily stress of 3-5-years-olds who are attending daycare centers, by examining the effects of 3-5-years-olds' time spent in daycare centers and peer competence on daily stress. To this end, two hundred and fifty 3-5-years-olds attending the same daycare for more than 6 months were selected from 5 daycare centers in Daejeon Metropolitan City and tested for their daily stress levels. In addition their teachers completed peer competence tests and a short questionnaire regarding the 3-5-years-olds. In terms of the results, those 3-5-years-olds who spent more than 7 hours or longer in daycare centers were found to have a higher level of daily stress than the 3-5-years-olds who spent less than 7 hours. Additionally, those 3-5-years-olds who returned home after 6 p.m were found to have a higher level of daily stress than the 3-5-years-olds who returned home before 6 p.m. Moreover, it was found that the more time 3-5-years-olds spent in daycare centers and the lower their peer competences were, the more daily stress they seemed to experience.
