  • This study was to investigate the production of combustion toxic gases of pinus rigida specimens treated with pyrophosphoric acid (PP)/4ammonuium ion ($4NH_4{^+}$), methylenepiperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (PIPEABP) and PIPEABP/$4NH_4{^+}$. Each pinus rigida plates was painted in three times with 15 wt% in the aqueous solution followed by drying the species at room temperature. Emission of combustion toxic gases was examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). First-time to peak mass loss rate (1st-$TMLR_{peak}$) treated with chemicals was delayed upto 66.7~250.0% compared to those of untreated specimens. For test pieces treated with the chemicals, the emission of peak carbon monoxide ($CO_{peak}$) values of 0.0136~0.0178% and peak carbon dioxide ($CO_{2\;peak}$) value of 0.04432~0.3648% were obtained, which were higher than those for the virgin plate. In particular, oxygen emission is much higher than the level of 15% which can be fatal to humans. Therefore, the resulting risk could be eliminated. However it is supposed that the combustion-toxicities were partially increased compared to those of virgin plate.

  • Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is an extremely toxic gas frequently produced during the incineration of plastics, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). A victim of a fire who has inhaled smoke could have cyanide in the blood. Therefore, cyanide could be a good marker for a post-mortem examination of a fire as well as carboxyhemoglobine (COHb) test of blood samples. For a particular fire case, a burned body with a suicide note was found inside a burned vehicle. Even though the COHb value is conclusive evidence, measuring the COHb for denatured blood might be difficult due to severe thermal denaturation or the formation of methemoglobin (MetHb). To overcome this difficulty, cyanide could be used as an indicator when investigating the death of a fire victim. In this study, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was adopted to measure the levels of cyanide in the blood through derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFBBr) under cation surfactant by scan and SIM mode. The concentration of cyanide in the blood of heart blood and brain of the victim was found to be 0.36 µg/mL and 1.20 µg/mL respectively, which was higher than the average value (0.041 µg/mL) found in the blood of 14 people who smoked.

  • For hazardous air pollutants(HAP) such as NO and $NO_2$ decomposition efficiency, power consumption, and applied voltage were investigated by SPCP(surface induced discharge plasma chemical processing) reactor to obtain optimum process variables and maximum decomposition efficiencies. Decomposition efficiency of HAP with various electric frequencies(5~50 kHz), flow rates(100~1,000 mL/min) initial concentrations(100~1,000 ppm), electrode materials(W, Cu, Al), electrode thickness(1, 2, 3 mm) and number of electrode windings(7, 9, 11) were measured. Experimental results showed that for the frequency of 10 kHz, the highest decomposition efficiency of 94.3% for NO and 84.7% for $NO_2$ were observed at the poser consumptions of 19.8 and 29W respectively and that decomposition efficiency decreased with increasing frequency above 20 kHz. Decomposition efficiency was increased with increasing residence times and with decreasing initial concentration of pollutants. Decomposition efficiency was increased with increasing thickness of discharge electrode and the highest decomposition efficiency was obtained for the electrode diameter of 3mm in this experiment. As the electrode material, decomposition efficiency was in order : tungsten(W), copper(Cu), aluminum(Al).

  • The influence of co-existing gases on the hydrogen permeation without sweep gas was studied through a Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane. Membranes have been investigated in the pressure range 1.5-8.0 bar under pure hydrogen, hydrogen-carbon dioxide and hydrogen-carbon monoxide gas mixture without sweep gas at $400^{\circ}C$. Preliminary hydrogen permeation experiments without sweep gas have been confirmed that hydrogen flux was $40.7mL/min/cm^2$ for a Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane (thick : 0.5 mm) using pure hydrogen as the feed gas. In addition, hydrogen flux was $21.4mL/min/cm^2$ for $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane using $H_2/CO_2$ as the feed gas. The hydrogen permeation flux decreased with decrease of hydrogen partial pressure irrespective of pressure when $H_2/CO_2$and $H_2/CO$mixture applied as feed gas respectively and permeation fluxes were satisfied with Sievert's law in different feed conditions. It was found from XRD, SEM/EDX results after permeation test that the Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane had good stability and durability for various mixtures feeding condition.

  • Bacterial resistance to antibiotics and residues of antibiotics in poultry products have encouraged the use of probiotics, prebiotic substrates, and synbiotic combinations of prebiotics and probiotics as alternative approaches to the use of antibiotics in poultry. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of a new probiotic CS61 culture on growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, and safety in broiler chickens, and to evaluate its value as an alternative for antibiotics used as a feed additive. Two dosages of CS61 culture (0.1% and 1%) were fed to chickens for 28 days. The results showed that terminal body weight and daily weight gain in the treatment groups increased in a dose-dependent manner when compared with the control group. Dietary supplementation with CS61 culture also improved feed conversion rate compared to the control group. There were no treatment-related toxic effects in terms of clinical findings, mortality, necropsy findings, hematology, or serum biochemistry parameters in any group tested. The nitric oxide assay showed that CS61 peptide has a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells. The results of this experiment indicated that dietary supplementation of CS61 culture may improve growth performance and feed conversion efficiency in chickens through its anti-inflammatory effect.

  • In this study, a vanadium catalyst study was conducted on the various characteristics of the exhaust gas in the Selective-Catalytic-Reduction (SCR) method in which nitrogen oxides emitted from cogeneration using biogas are removed by using ammonia as a reducing agent and a catalyst. V/W/TiO2, a commercial catalyst, was used as the catalyst in this study, and the effect was confirmed according to the tungsten content under various operating conditions. As a result of the NH3-SCR experiment, the denitrification performance was confirmed at 380 ~ 450 ℃ more than 95%, and durability to trace amounts of SO2 was confirmed through the SO2 durability experiment and TGA analysis. As a result of H2-TPR analysis, the higher the tungsten content, the better the redox properties. Accordingly, enhanced oxidizing properties were confirmed in the oxidation test for a trace amount of carbon monoxide emitted from the cogeneration. In NH3-DRIFTs analysis, it was confirmed that the higher the tungsten content, the higher both the Bronsted/Lewis acid sites and the better the thermal durability when tungsten is added to the catalyst. Based on the experiments under various operating conditions, it is considered that a catalyst with a high tungsten content is suitable to be applied to cogeneration using biogas.

  • We investigated the radiation exposure caused by DIPS, which is used to identify accurate repositioning and tumor location in pediatric cancer patients proton therapy. To compare and analyze DIPS condition, 50 pediatric cancer patients who underwent proton therapy were selected in Ilsan K cancer-specialized hospital from March 2007 to October 2009. For DIP exposure, 0.09~1.57 mGy is measured in AP and lateral directions and 23.55 mGy is measured in CSI patients. In whole brain patient, the amount of a day DIP exposure dose was 1.13 mGy. During treatment period, who exposed the biggest DIP dose are whole brain patients, 632.71 mGy is exposed. It is 1.13% of prescribed dose, represented dose is adequate because it is not exceeded 2% of recommended dose. Even though the exposed dose is not exceeded more than 2% of prescribed in DIP exposure, we should recognize the radiation damage and genetic influences to pediatric cancer patients, who is much sensitive to radiation and has longer mean residual life time. Therefore, DIPS guideline for pediatric cancer patients should be indicated to minimize the radiation exposure.

  • In this study, we conducted real-time measurement at the ship arrivals and departures at the port and at a constant speed of 150 rpm for exhaust emissions from a main engine installed on the training ship, HANBADA, of Korea Maritime University. The result showed that the concentration of nitrogen oxide was measured in the range of 800 ppm to 1,000 ppm at constant speed mode. On the other hand, the concentration of nitrogen oxide during ship arrivals and departures was significantly fluctuated between 210 ppm and 1,230 ppm. And, the concentration of carbon oxide at the arrivals and departures was also larger than that of at constant speed mode. These results show that the ship maneuvering skills to prevent a sudden load change of main engine at the arrivals and departures of ship is needed. Additionally, it means that the difference of exhaust emissions generated between the constant speed mode and the arrival/departure has to be considered when invented many technologies are adopted into the reduction technologies of air pollutants from ships.

  • One of the major causes of serious air pollution worldwide is emissions from road transportation. A number of countries are working to reduce vehicle emissions, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government is also implementing active policies to reduce emissions by setting a target of 40% by 2030. Implementing these policies requires the introduction of practical indicators. Most of the domestic emissions are calculated by the emission coefficient, a function of speed at the National Institute of Environmental Research under the Ministry of Environment, but the dynamic variable speed is limited to being used as an indicator of the number of eco-friendly vehicles. Therefore, this study calculated the emission rates in Seoul using the vehicle registration data of Seoul and the vehicle inspection data from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. The tendency of emissions was determined according to key variables such as vehicle type, fuel and mileage. Emissions were based on carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter measured by vehicle inspection from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. As a result, the emission rates showed a significant trend according to the model year and mileage. This can be used as a policy indicator to preferentially switch commercial vehicles with old model years and long mileage when switching eco-friendly vehicles in Seoul.

  • Background: In patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSAS), there are several factors increasing upper airway resistance and there is a predisposition to compromised respiratory function during waking and sleep related to constitutional factors including a tendency to obesity. Several recent studies have suggested a possible relationship between sleep apnea(SA) and systemic hypertension. But the possible pathophysiologic link between SA and hypertension is still unclear. In this study, we have examined the relationship among age, body mass index(BMI), pulmonary function parameters and polysomnographic data in patients with OSAS. And also we tried to know the difference among these parameters between hypertensive OSAS and normotensive OSAS patients. Methods: Patients underwent a full night of polysomnography and measured pulmonary function during waking. OSAS was diagnosed if patients had more than 5 apneas per hour(apnea index, AI). A careful history of previously known or present hypertension was obtained from each patient, and patients with systolic blood pressure $\geq$ 160mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure $\geq$ 95mmHg were classified as hypertensives. Results: The noctural nadir of arterial oxygen saturation($SaO_2$ nadir) was negatively related to AI and respiratory disturbance index(RDI), and the degree of noctural oxygen desaturation(DOD) was positively related to AI and RDI. BMI contributed to AI, RDI, $SaO_2$ nadir and DOD values. And also BMI contributed to $FEV_1,\;FEV_1/FVC$ and DLco values. There was a correlation between airway resistance(Raw) and AI, and there was a inverse correlation between DLco and DOD. But there was no difference among these parameters between hypertensive OSAS and normotensive OSAS patients. Conclusion: The obesity contributed to the compromised respiratory function and the severity of OSAS. AI and RDI were important factors in the severity of hypoxia during sleep. The measurement of pulmonary function parameters including Raw and DLco may be helpful in the prediction and assessment of OSAS patients. But we could not find clear difference between hypertensive and normotensive OSAS patients.
