  • Recently, the proportion of long tunnel has increased for efficient use of land due to limited land area, driving convenience and high speed. RMR and Q-System of empirical methods has been mainly used for tunnel support design in domestic. Although shotcrete is the key to NATM tunnel, the related studies are insufficient. So, steel fiber reinforced shotcrete is applied to II~V grade rocks on domestic and foreign applications. And same amount of shotcrete is equally applied to tunnel roof and wall regardless of the applied rock load. Shotcrete is applied excessively rather than the original proposed value of RMR and Q-System. Thus, this study is to reevaluate the application part of plain shotcrete and steel fiber reinforced shotcrete of tunnel in Daebo granite, and to propose the reasonable application method of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. Field test and numerical back analysis using measurements were performed to verify stability. According to results, if RMR values are the upper class in the III grade, it can be designed in accordance with upper grade. In addition, if rock condition is good as a mountain tunnel in Daebo granite, it can be applied for plain shotcrete to III grade rocks because there is also no stability problems. And although steel fiber reinforced shotcrete is applied only crown of the tunnel in IV grade rocks, it is possible to secure stability for falling rock by key-block.

  • The field measurements on the shotcrete lining are usually performed during the tunnel construction. However, the credibility of the measurements is not certain because of the non-stress related strains occurring in the shotcrete, the uncertainty of the deformation modulus of the shotcrete, and the intrinsic difficulties involved in the strain measurements in the shotcrete. The problem related to the field measurements on the shotcrete is investigated using the review of the previous studies and the field measurement performed for this study. A method for the correction of stress measurements at the shotcrete lining, considering the non-stress related strains, is suggested using the literature review and the actual measurements obtained from the non-stress shotcretes. The deformation modulus used for the calculation of the stress acting on the shotcrete is also suggested.

  • Bonding strength of shotcrete is a significant influential factor which plays the role of collapse prevention of tunnel crown and of debonding prevention of shotcrete induced by the blasting vibration. Thus, the evaluation of the shotcrete bonding state is one of the core components for shotcrete quality control. In this study, the peak particle velocities induced by blasting were measured on the shotcrete in a tunnel construction site and its effect on the bonding state of shotcrete is investigated. Drilling and blasting technique was used for the excavation of intersection tunnel connecting the main tunnel with the service tunnel. Blast-induced vibrations were monitored at some points of the main tunnel and the service tunnel. The shotcrete bonding state was evaluated by using impact-echo test coupled with the time-frequency domain analysis which is called short-time Fourier transformation. Analysis results of blast-induced vibrations and the time-frequency domain impact-echo signals showed that the blasting condition applied to the excavation of intersection tunnel hardly affects on the tunnel shotcrete bonding state. The general blasting practice in Korea was evaluated to have a minor negative impact on shotcrete quality.

  • It is well known that shotcrete is the most important support member for the construction of large underground spaces. Generally, the strength of the field shotcrete is heavily dependent on the field mixing and spraying conditions so that it is different from the strength of the shotcrete mixed in laboratories. As a support member, the early strength of shotcrete unlike concrete is very important to the initial stabilization of the underground spaces. Therefore, the field methods to efficiently test the early strength of shotcrete have been highly required. This paper aimed to verify the pneumatic pin penetration test and the point load test for measuring the early strength of the field shotcrete. As a result of the experiments through a series of uniaxial compression, pin penetration, and point load tests for the range of the early shotcrete strength, two equations to estimate reliably the uniaxial compressive strength by the pin penetration and the point load tests were acquired.

  • The shotcrete is a NATM technique as a major tunnel support for ground stability after tunnel excavation. Instead of a general concrete lining method, it is a trend for curtail of construction periods and reduction of construction expenses that required to use of the permanent shotcrete lining. This high-strength shotcrete is required to use as a permanent shotcrete lining. This brought out the solution of environmental pollution and harmfulness to human. Accordingly, in this study specimens for strength measurement were made to develop shotcrete possible to develop materials in early with cement mineral accelerator as NATM method construction. It was compared with existing shotcrete material, unconfined compression test, flexural strength test, antiwashout underwater test were experimented. The fish poison test was experimented to evaluate an influence of environment. As a results of the test, unconfined compressive strength and flexural strength were equivalent with 28-curing day strength of existing material. An antiwashout of research subject material was revealed excellently in antiwashout Underwater test. As a results of the fish poison, an evaluation research subject material was founded more environmentally friendly than existing shotcrete.

  • The aim of shotcrete is to increase the bearing capacity and to protect the excavated surface from erosion by preventing falling of rock mass. Shotcreting method is divided into two types as dry process and wet process. Since 1997, wet process method has been used more frequently than dry process method in field works. The failure to bond, so called rebound, occurs in many case during shotcrete works. The excess amount of rebound has a significant effect on the total construction cost. For example, material and craft-man cost increases, the shooting time delays due to deceleration of work execution stage, work efficiency of craft-man decreases and additional cost to remove the muck generates. In this study, therefore, the experimental analysis of rebound amount and strength was conducted by analyzing the actual construction data for wet process type of shotcreting method upon accelerator contents. Also, the effective and rational method was suggested, which can be actually implemented in the Korea construction sites.

  • Now-a-days, the trend in constructing tunnels is to build more deeper, more longer tunnels of greater cross-sections. That's why, the demand of "Early-high-strength shotcrete" is very high because of their advantage of attaining higher strength immediately after excavation, which controls the ground subsidence. So, this study reveals the supporting phenomena of early-high-strength shotcrete, using three-dimensional numerical analysis. The crux of this study can be applied practically in construction sites also. Support Performance of two different qualities of shotcrete was checked out, by keeping the general shotcrete's thickness constant and comparing it with early-high-strength shotcrete's thickness decreasing it gradually in five steps, and analysing/comparing the support performance in all cases. Effect of using early-high-strength shotcrete was analysed to save the cost of steel sets, which are widely used for supporting the ground before the hardening of general shotcrete. The results of numerical analysis on the performance of early-high-strength shotcrete show that, it behaves more effectively under worse ground conditions and it can support the ground more conveniently than steel sets, before the shotcrete is hardened.

  • The Application of Steel Fiber Shotcrete in tunneling construction has become part of tunneling practice at least since the 1970s because of its high bending and tensile properties. Over the past 3 decades, researcher from all over the world have been significantly developing the associated technologies for improved performance of SFRS. But still it has some major drawbacks in terms of durability, damage of pumping hose, wastage due to rebound concrete, corrosion and it costs high. To overcome this situation researcher has to look for some alternative material. Therefore, this part study deals with the three types of fiber in order to find good alternative for steel fiber. Polyamide and Polypropylene fiber were used in this study with 0.6, 0.5% mixing ratio. To evaluate its fresh and harden properties air content, slump, compressive, split tensile and bending strength were measured. After comparing the results of all three types of fiber reinforced concrete with its different mixing proportion this study propose that polyamide fiber with addition ratio of 0.6 % for field use.
