Enhanced Mode Estimation Method for Intra/Inter Prediction in H.264/AVC (H.264/AVC에서 향상된 인트라/인터 예측을 위한 모드 추정 방법)

  • The intra prediction and the motion estimation of inter prediction occupy 70 ~ 80% of whole compression time in H.264/AVC. Compression efficiency has been higher, but complexity has increased and coding time has also increased much more. This paper proposes a block size decision method of the intra prediction and mode decision method which minimize the loss of video quality during the encoding and shorten the time spent. This paper, in addition, proposes an algorithm which determines the method of adaptive block mode for motion estimation of inter prediction. We investigated PSNR and the intra prediction and inter prediction of time-consuming calculations in order to measure video quality degradation and complexity through experiments. Consequently, when you use all three methods, these methods showed that average coding time is shortened as about 500 to 600ms in every frame in the case of all experimented videos, keeping video quality nearly similar, compared with existing methods of H.264.

  • 본 논문은 딥러닝을 이용하여 예측 블록을 개선하는 화면 내 예측 기법을 제안한다. 컨볼루션 신경망 네트워크로부터 기존의 VVC의 화면 내 예측 모드를 통해 구성한 예측 블록과 주변 참조 샘플을 통과하여 보다 원본에 가까운 예측 블록을 생성한다. 따라서 예측 후 신호는 원본 블록과의 차분 신호를 줄여 비디오 부호화 성능을 향상하게 된다. 실험 결과, VTM-10.0 대비 휘도성분에 대해 약 1.16%의 BD-rate을 개선하였다.

  • Recently, with rapid development of digital broadcasting technology, high-definition video service increased interest and demand. supplied mobile and image device support that improve 4~16 time existing Full HD. Such as high-definition contents supply, proposed compression for high-efficiency video codec (HEVC). Therefore, watermarking technology is necessary applying HEVC for protecting ownership and intellectual property. In this paper, analysis of prediction mode in intra frame and study feasibility of watermarking in re-encoding based HEVC. Proposed detect un-changed blocks in intra frame, using the result of analysis prediction mode.

Fast Intra Mode Decision for H.264/AVC by Using the Approximation of DCT Coefficient (H.264/AVC에서 DCT 계수의 근사화를 이용한 고속 인트라 모드 결정 기법)

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard uses rate distortion optimization (RDO) method to improve the compression performance in the intra prediction. The complexity and computational load are increased more than previous standard by using this method, even though this standard selects the best coding mode for the current macroblock. This paper proposes a fast intra mode decision algorithm for H.264/AVC encoder based on dominant edge direction (DED). To apply the idea, this algorithm uses the approximation of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient. By detecting the DED, 3 modes instead of 9 modes are chosen for RDO calculation to decide the best mode in the $4{\times}4$ luma block. As for the $16{\times}16$ luma and $8{\times}8$ chroma block, instead of 4 modes, only 2 modes are searched. Experimental results show that the computation time of the proposed algorithm is decreased to about 72% of the full search method with negligible quality loss.

Efficient Intra Prediction Mode Decision Method using Integer Transform Coefficients for the Transcoding of MPEG-2 to H.264 Standard (MPEG-2에서 H.264로의 Transcoding 과정에서 정수 변환 계수를 이용한 효율적인 인트라 예측 모드 결정 방법)

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard shows extremely higher coding efficiency, but it causes high computational complexity. Especially, the intra mode decision using the rate-distortion method requires many computations. Thus, the efficient intra mode decision methods have been proposed by decreasing the encoding complexity. In this paper, we propose an efficient intra mode decision algorithm using $4{\times}4$ integer transform coefficients in the conversion of MPEG-2 to H.264 standard. It is shown that the proposed algorithm reduces encoding time and complexity compared to the conventional algorithm, while showing similar PSNR performance.

Secondary Residual Transform for Lossless Intra Coding in HEVC (제 2차 잔차 변환을 이용한 HEVC 무손실 인트라 코딩)

  • A new lossless intra coding method based on residual transform is applied to the next generation video coding standard HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). HEVC includes a multi-directional spatial prediction method to reduce spatial redundancy by using neighboring samples as a prediction for the samples in a block of data to be encoded. In the new lossless intra coding method, the spatial prediction is performed as samplewise DPCM (Difference Pulse Code Modulation) but is implemented as block-based manner by using residual transform and secondary residual transform on the HEVC standard. Experimental results show that the new lossless intra coding method reduces the bit rate by approximately 6.45% in comparison with the lossless intra coding method previously included in the HEVC standard.

Fast Intra Mode Selection Algorithm Based on Edge Activity in Transform Domain for H.264/AVC Video (변환영역에서의 에지활동도에 기반한 H.264/AVC 고속 인트라모드 선택 방법)

  • For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264/AYC standard uses new coding tools such as 1/4-pel-accurate motion estimation, multiple references, intra prediction, loop filter, variable block size etc. Using these coding tools, H.264/AYC has achieved significant improvements from rate-distortion point of view compared to existing standards. However, the encoder complexity was greatly increased due to these coding tools. We focus on the complexity reduction method of intra macroblock mode selection. The proposed algorithm for fast intra mode selection calculates the edge activity in transform domain, and performs fast encoding of intra frame in H.264/AYC through the fast prediction mode selection of intra4x4 and chrominance blocks. Simulation results show that the proposed method saves about 59.76% for QCIF sequences and 65.03% for CIF sequences of total encoding time, while bitrate increase and PSNR decrease are very small.

A Study on the Guided Search Method for Transcoding MPEG2 P frame to H.263 P frame in a Compressed Domain (압축상태에서 MPEG2 P 프레임을 H.263 P 프레임으로 변환하기 위한 가이드 탐색 방법 연구)

  • The purpose of the paper is to enable a format transcoding between a heterogeneous compression format in a real time, and to enhance the compression ratio using characteristics of the compressed frame. In this paper, for the heterogeneous format transcoding, we tried to transcode from MPEG2 having a lower compression ratio to H.263 having a higher compression ratio. After analyzing MPEG 2 bit stream and H.263 bit stream of the same original video, we found that the number of intra coded macro blocks in MPEG 2 data is much higher than the number of the intra coded macro blocks in H.263 data. In the process of P frame generation, a intra coded macro block is generated when a motion estimation value representing the similarity between the previous frame and current frame does not meet a threshold. Especially the intra coded macro block has a great impact on the compression ratio. Hence the paper, we tried to minimize the number of intra coded macro blocks in H.263 data stream which is transcoded from MPEG 2 in a compressed domain. For the purpose, we propose a guided search method for transcoding the INTRA coded block into INTER coded block using the information about motion vectors surrounding the intra macro block in order to minimize the complexity of the motion estimation process. The experimental results show that the transcoding of MPEG 2 into H.263 can be done in a real time successfully.

Adaptive Intra Frame Encoding for H.264/AVC (H.264/AVC를 위한 적응적 인트라 프레임 압축)

  • In H.264 standard, an intra frame is the first frame of a GOP (Group of Pictures) and all macroblocks of an intra frame are encoded using the same quantization parameter. In addition, an intra frame is used for encoding the following frames of the same GOP so the encoding results of an intra frame affect the encoding results of the entire GOP. Thus, it is important to find the optimal quantization parameter of an intra frame for improving the quality of a GOP. In this paper, we propose an searching method for an optimal quantization parameter of an intra frame in real time. The proposed method uses a gradient descent method to find the optimal value based on characteristics of the optimal quantization parameters. Experimental results show that the proposed method captures the characteristics of the optimal quantization parameter and accurately estimates the optimal value.

Design of Intra Prediction Circuit for HEVC and H.264 Multi-decoder Supporting UHD Images (UHD 영상을 지원하는 HEVC 및 H.264 멀티 디코더 용 인트라 예측 회로 설계)

  • This paper proposes the architecture and design of intra prediction circuit for a multi-decoder supporting UHD images. The proposed circuit supports not only the latest video compression standard HEVC but also H.264. In addition to the basic function of performing intra prediction, this circuit has the capability of performing the reference sample filter operation defined in the H.264 standard, and the smoothing and strong sample filter operations defined in the HEVC standard. We reduced the circuit size by sharing the circuit blocks for common operations and internal storage, and improved the circuit performance by parallel processing. The proposed circuit was described at RTL using Verilog HDL and its functionality was verified by using NC-Verilog of Cadence. The RTL circuit was synthesized by using Design Compiler of Synopsys and 130nm standard cell library. The synthesized gate-level circuit consists of 69,694 gates and processes 100 ~ 280 frames per second for 4K-UHD HEVC images at the maximum operation frequency of 157MHz.
