Fast Intra Mode Decision for H.264/AVC based on Directional Information (방향 정보를 이용한 H.264/AVC의 고속 인트라 모드 결정)

  • H.264/AVC video coding standard adapting a rate-distortion optimization technique to select the best coding mode with multi reference frames for each macroblock gets a higher coding efficiency than those of previous video coding standards but the computational complexity increases drastically. Therefore, many fast mode decision algorithms are proposed to reduce the computational complexity. Among them, we propose a fast intra mode decision algorithm based on directional information of I4MB. The proposed algorithm achieves consistent time saving about 15% in IPPP sequences and 44% in all I frame sequences with negligible loss in PSNR and small increment of bit rate compared with that of JM11.0.

  • HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding)는 JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding)라는 ITU-T(VCEG)와 ISO-IEC(MPEG)가 공동으로 진행한 팀이 만들어낸 표준화이다. 이 표준화된 코덱에서 율-왜곡 최적화(RDO)는 실행함에 있어 높은 성능 향상을 보이지만 상대적으로 많은 부호화 시간이 요구된다. RDO 의 부호화 시간을 줄이기 위해서 이 논문에서는 변환 계수를 이용한 고속 인트라 예측 방법을 제안한다. 기존 HEVC 에서는 RMD(Rough Mode Decision)를 통해 상위 N 개의 후보를 구하고 MPM(Most Probable Mode)을 거쳐 나온 후보들의 수의 합을 가지고 RDO 를 구하게 된다. 여기서 제안하는 고속 인트라 예측 방법은 RDO 를 구하기 전에 나왔던 N 개의 후보에서 이산 여현 변환(DCT) 계수를 이용하여 예측 모드의 수를 한 번 더 줄임으로써 RDO 수행시간을 줄이는 방법이다. 이 방법은 기존 HEVC 부호화 방법보다 적은 손실에도 불구하고 높은 속도 향상을 보인다.

  • 최근 360 미디어 콘텐츠의 수요가 높아지면서 360 영상을 효율적으로 전송하기 위한 다양한 압축 및 전송 기법들이 연구되고 있다. 360 영상의 스트리밍 기법 중 하나인 타일 기반 적응적 스트리밍 기법은 360 비디오를 타일 그리드로 나누어 부호화 하고, 뷰포트(Viewport)에 해당하는 타일만 스트리밍 할 수 있도록 한다. 기존의 타일 기반 스트리밍 기법은 뷰포트가 전환될 때 서버에 새로운 인트라 프레임을 요구하고, 지연 시간을 줄이기 위해 빈번한 RAP(Random Access Point)가 요구된다는 단점이 있다. 본 논문은 기존의 타일 기반 스트리밍 방법에서 인트라 프레임의 공유를 통해 비트율의 효율을 높이는 IFS(Intra Frame Sharing) 알고리즘을 제안한다. 제안된 IFS 방법은 낮은 화질의 인트라 프레임을 높은 화질의 인트라 프레임 부호화 시 공유하여, 뷰포트 스위칭 시점에서 다른 화질 간의 뷰포트 전환 작업이 필요 없어 비트율의 증가를 최소화한다. 실험에서, IFS 방법은 기존의 MCTS 기반의 적응적 스트리밍 방식과 비교했을 때 BD-rate(%)가 약 13% 절감되었다.

Efficient Intra Prediction Mode Decision Using DCT Coefficients for the Conversion of MPEG-2 to H.264 Standard in Ubiquitous Communication Environment (유비쿼터스 통신 환경에서 MPEG-2의 H.264로의 Transcoding 과점에서 DCT 계수를 이용한 효율적인 인트라 예측 모드 결정 기법)

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard provides higher coding efnciency compared to the conventional MPEG-2 standard. Since a lot of videos have been encoded using MPEG-2, the format conversion from MPEG-2 to H.264 is essential. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for the conversion of DCT coefficients to H.264/AVC transform coefficients. This conversion is essential, since $8{\times}8$ DCT and $4{\times}4$ integer transform are used in MPEG-2 and H.264/AVC, respectively. The mathematical analysis and computer simulation show that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced compared to the conventional algorithm, while the loss caused by the conversion is negligible.

Method for signaling intra prediction mode with merging MPM (MPM을 병합하여 인트라 예측 모드를 시그널링하는 방법)

  • In this paper, we proposed an intra coding method with merging intra prediction mode to achieve intra coding gain. The proposed method uses signaling of prediction mode with merging prediction modes, which is different from the conventional method. If the number of blocks that has the same prediction mode compared to that to be predicted from neighboring blocks exceeds the predefined threshold, then the proposed method is used in order to reduce bits of intra prediction mode for coding efficiency. Otherwise the conventional method is used. Experimental results show the proposed method achieves the PSNR gain of about 0.05 dB in RD curve and reduces the bit rates about 1 % compared with H.264/AVC. In particular, the PSNR gain of about 0.1 dB in RD curve and reduces the bit rates about 1.7 % compared with H.264/AVC at low bit-rates. we can know that the proposed method is efficient tool at low bit-rates.

Adaptive Combination of Intra/Inter Predictions in JM KTA Software (JM KTA 소프트웨어에서 인트라 및 인터 예측블록이 혼합된 코딩 방법)

  • We propose an adaptive combination scheme of intra and inter prediction modes, where uni-directional intra prediction, bi-directional intra prediction, and inter prediction method are adaptively selected in an EMB (extended macro block). For each EMB, after all inter blocks have been encoded and decoded, the reconstructed blocks are used as reference data for bi-directional intra prediction of other blocks. Whereas conventional intra coding scheme does not use the right and below side pixels of the current block as reference data, the proposed method uses those for bi-directional intra prediction mode. In this paper, we propose three advanced techniques; (a) filter design for bi-directional prediction, (b) adaptive coding order scheme which increases the chance to use the bi-directional intra prediction mode, (c) modification of syntax to represent coding order. The information for the coding order is informed to the decoder by using the modified syntax structure without adding any additional flag. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the BD-Rate by 0.5%, on average, compared to KTA.

Adaptive Fast Algorithm for Inter/Intra Prediction in H.264 (H.264의 인터/인트라 예측을 위한 적응적 고속 알고리즘)

  • The latest standard H.264 coding methods show better efficiency compared to the former coding standards from the rate distortion point of view, but also lead to high complexity. In this paper, we propose an adaptive and fast inter/intra prediction algorithm for H.264 video coding. In the inter prediction algorithm, an effective and simple mode selection method is proposed, which can adaptively adjust to motion estimation to reduce complexity. And proposed intra prediction algorithm reduces its complexity by using calculated Minimum Rate-Distortion costs in the prediction of Intra $16{\times}16$ and $4{\times}4$ modes. From experiment using JM8.4, our algorithm can reduce about $60.9\%$ of computation time as compared to JM, with only negligible PSNR and bitrate degradation.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to compress simple computer cell animation at very low bit rate. The structure of proposed algorithm consists of intra frame coding and inter frame coding. In inter frame coding, animation is encoded by color quantization using a palette, rearrangement of index, ADPCM used in JPEG-LS, mapping, classification, and entropy coding. In interframe coding, classifying the characteristics of motion, animation is encoded by block based motion replenishment. Experimental results show that the proposed methods turns out to outperform conventional methods including Flash, FLC, Motion-JPEG, MPEG-1, and MPEG-4.

  • H.264/AVC의 인트라 예측모드는 가변 크기 블록과 예측 부호화를 사용하여 압축효율을 높이고 있다. 인트라 예측 모드는 $16{\times}16$블록, $4{\times}4$블록에 대해 수행되며, 예측 모드는 참조픽셀의 위치와 예측 방향에 따라 구분된다. 기존의 예측모드는 왼쪽과 위쪽의 참조 픽셀을 가지고 예측을 하게 된다. 이 경우, 참조 픽셀과의 거리가 먼 픽셀들의 예측 정확도가 떨어진다. 본 논문에서는 예측 정확도를 향상시켜 부호화 효율을 최대화 할 수 있는 인트라 예측 방법을 제안한다.

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard shows superior coding efficiency by adopting many new techniques. However, the encoding complexity increases greatly to achieve higher coding efficiency. Especially, the rate distortion optimization technique, which is used to decide the intra-prediction mode, increases the encoding complexity. In this paper, we propose an efficient intra-prediction mode decision method. By using the variance of pixel values and the edge direction, the computational complexity of the intra-prediction mode decision is greatly reduced.
