It has been argued that internet game overflow (IGO) causes negative effects on mental health among adolescents. Especially, suicide has been known as one of the most serious mental health problems in Korea. This study is to examine the effect of IGO on suicidal ideation among adolescents, and to examine the relationship among IGO, depressive mood, and suicidal ideation by analyzing the mediating effect of depressive mood in the relationship between IGO and suicidal ideation. For this purpose, we analyzed the 2012 dataset from the Korea Children and Youth Mental Health Promotion Study (N=8,745) by the National Youth Policy Institute. The results showed that, first, about 5.6% of adolescents were included in the risky group depending on the criteria of the measurement. Second, IGO has a statistically significant effect on suicide ideation when considering the two variables only. Third, however, as depressive mood was found to have a complete mediating effect in the relationship between IGO and suicidal ideation, IGO increases suicidal ideation by increasing depressive mood. As policy and practice implications, the necessity of intervention to reduce IGO and mental health problems among adolescents was discussed.

Moreover, most of the on-site counselors for game addiction needs professional training courses and want to participates in that courses. To solve the problem, this paper found out the needs of them through the survey of students, parents, and on-site counselor's needs and will propose new training curriculum for professional counselors. The results of this study would be available to train professionals for game addiction counseling and could help students who suffer from game addiction. Ultimately korean young people will play online games healthy.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group art therapy on the aggression and emotional regulation ability of elementary school students over-immersed in Internet games. The subjects include 16 elementary school children from H Local Children's Center in S City and G Local Children's Center in Y City. They were allocated to the experiment and control group each of which consisted of eight. Total 12 sessions of Group art therapy were administered to the experiment group twice per week from January 4 to February 15, 2016. Employed in the study were the Internet game addiction, aggression, and emotional regulation inventories. Collected data were treated with repeated measures ANOVA for differences according to the implementation time and group. The findings show that group art therapy had positive effects for mitigating the aggression of elementary school students over-immersed in Internet games and increasing their emotional regulation ability and that those effects lasted. Those findings indicate that group art therapy is effective for alleviating the aggression of elementary school children over-immersed in Internet games and improving their emotional regulation ability. Finally, based on the reuslt of this study, the development and future direction of this program for prevention and treatment of elementary school students over-immersed in Internet games is suggested.
This study aimed to explore the relationships between random item usage and gaming disorder tendency. A total of 413 adults participated and demographic and psychosocial variables were collected using Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and Daily Hassles Scale for Korean Worker. The results are as follows. First, two-third of gamers used the random item games and women are more engaged than men in random item games. Second, there were significant differences of gaming disorder tendency, game use time, and game use money (both for general and random item) depending on the item use type. Third, predictors of gaming disorder tendency were found as game use money (general), game use time, maladaptive emotion regulation, stress, novelty seeking, and stress using multiple regression analysis. Proper intervention for gaming disorder tendency and the need of further research were discussed.

The purpose of the study is to prove the effectiveness of bibliotherapy program to overcome of the excessive absorption on games for children. A 12-week programs were developed and managed in 1-2 grade, 3-4 grade, 5-6 grade for the elementary school student. Also MGUS (Maladaptive Game Use Scale), Self-Esteem Inventory, Self-Control Inventory, and HTP(House, Tree, Person) Diagnosis Tool were measured prior to the bibliotherapy and post-tests were followed to the participants statistically by t-test. According to analysis results, the bibliotherapy program was effectiveness to overcome of the excessive absorption on games for children.
This research examined the actual state of deaf students' use of Internet games by administering an Internet game addiction scale test to 201 deaf students from elementary, middle or high schools. The research findings indicated that middle and high school students were more likely to be left at home after school without their protector's presence than elementary school students. The average daily sleep hours of deaf students were similar to or fewer than those of general students, and the amount of their Internet access time and the one spent on Internet games were greater than that of non disabled students. As for the Internet user types, more male deaf students were categorized into risk user type than female deaf students, and the number of deaf risk user type students was significantly higher than that of non disabled risk user type students. The results suggest that the on-going national research on the actual state of Internet game users should include disabled students and that there is an urgent need to develop prevention programs of computer games overindulgence.
Excessive use of the internet and smart phones have become a social issue. The level of engagement has both positive and negative effects such as good performance or indulgence phenomenon, respectively. This study was to develop an algorithm to determine the engagement state based on cardiovascular response. The participants were asked to play a pattern matching game and the experimental design was divided into cooperation and competition task to provide the level of engagement. The correlation between heart rate and amplitude was analyzed according to each task. The regression equation and accuracy were verified by polynomial regression analysis. The results showed that heart rate and amplitude were positively correlated when the task was a game, and negatively correlated when there was a reference task. The accuracy of classifying between game and reference task was 89%. The accuracy between tasks was confirmed to be 76.5%. This study is expected to be used to quantitatively evaluate the level of engagement in real time.
The market size of online games has been rapidly growing as well as the behaviors of online gaming users have been changed. Online games are different from the traditional video games, because they permit players to interact each other during playing games. Today online gaming is a part of everyday life and social interaction has an impact on online gaming behaviors. Social interaction does not only have a positive impact on online game behaviors, but it also has a negative impact on them such as excessive online game usage. Previous research has a limitation to consider social interaction as a comprehensive concept. In order to fill the gap, we explore the factors of social interaction influencing on excessive online game usage. After reviewing previous literature, this study chooses three factors of social interaction such as escaping loneliness, expanding online social bridging capital, and reinforcing offline social bonding capital. The findings show that all of three factors of social interaction positively affect the excessive online game usage.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the time spent on violent internet games and game overindulgence on aggressive behavior exhibited by elementary school-aged boys and to investigate the mediating effects of self-control on the relationship between children's game overindulgence and their aggressive behavior. The subjects of this study were 118 fourth to sixth grade boys from five elementary schools. The instruments used were the aggression subscale of the Korean-Youth Self Report (Oh, Ha, Lee, & Hong, 2001), a questionnaire of the time spent playing violent internet games developed by the authors, the Internet Game Addiction Scale for Children (Kim, Lee, Kim, Kim, & Kim, 2006) and the Self-Control Scale (Nam, 1999). The data were analyzed by means of a Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results were as follows. First, children's self-control mediated the relationship between game overindulgence and aggressive behavior. Second, the amount of time spent playing violent internet games had no effect on children's aggressive behavior.
