Neural representation of a visual object is distributed across visual cortex and overlapped with those of many other objects. Thus repeating an object facilitates the recognition of the object while it impairs the recognition of other objects. These effects are called repetition priming and antipriming, respectively. Two experiments investigated a new phenomenon of repetition antipriming, in which a repeated object itself is antiprimed. The learning stage presented object pictures which were degraded at various levels. Participants determined how recognizable each object was. Then, the test stage presented the intact version of the object pictures and made participants to perform a categorization task. Both Experiment 1 and 2 found that the processing of the objects that had been recognized were facilitated (repetition priming) while the processing of the objects that had been perceptually ambiguous were impaired (repetition antipriming). These findings suggest that experiencing a perceptually ambiguous object might enhance the connection between feature-level representations and multiple object-level representations, which impairs the subsequent recognition of the repeated object.

This study investigated the influences of situational interest, attention, and cognitive effort on drawing as a method to assist students to connect and integrate multiple external representations provided in learning chemical concepts. Seventh graders (N=178) at two coed middle schools were taught about the "Boyle's Law" and the "Charles's Law" for two class hours through drawing. They observed macroscopic phenomena through demonstrations. After these observations, they drew their mental model from the external verbal representation, and then compared their drawings with external visual representation. The tests assessing situational interest, attention, cognitive effort, and conceptual understanding were administered as post-tests. Correlation and path analyses supported a causal model which situational interest had a positive direct effect on attention to the drawing. Attention led to conceptual understanding directly as well as through cognitive effort. These results suggest that situational interest may be induced by drawing first of all, and attention and cognitive effort may be direct causes of conceptual understanding in drawing. Educational implications are discussed.
As social beings, we need to understand others' actions as quickly and accurately as possible. Action understanding can occur at many levels. We sometimes grasp others' intentions unintentionally. Other times, however, we have to expend effort to draw inferences about their goals. In the context of joint action, the joint Simon effect demonstrates that actors are influenced by the unintended representation of a co-actor's actions. This effect has been described as quasi-automatic, but it is unclear if the effect is automatic enough to be immune to cognitive load. Thus, we asked participants to complete a joint Simon task with or without a concurrent working memory task. One group of participants maintained a single digit in their mind during working memory load blocks (low-load group), while the other group maintained five digits (high-load group). As a result, the low-load group showed a joint Simon effect both during no-load and low-load blocks. In contrast, the high-load group had no joint Simon effect during either no-load or high-load blocks. These results suggest that the joint Simon effect is not an automatic phenomenon given that it requires cognitive resources. Actors in a joint task may represent a co-actor's actions in their task set, but only when cognitive resources are available.
The present discussion is concerned with showing the development of natural language processing and how it is related to information and cognition. On the basis of the computeational model,in which humans are viewed as processors of linguistic structures that use stored knowledge-grammar, lexicon and structures representing the encyclopedic information of the world, such programs of natural language understanding as Winograd's SHRDLU came out. However, such pragmatic factors as contexts and the speaker's beliefs, internts, goals and intentions are not easy to process yet.Language, ingormation and cognition are argued to be closely interrelated, and the study of them, the paper argues, can lead to the development of science on general.
The study examined the mental representation of children in foster care through the MacArthur Story Stem Battery (MSSB) and reviewed difference between children in foster care and typical children in terms of mental representation. Subjects of the study included a total of 50 children: 25 children (11 boys and 14 girls), aged from 5 to 8, in foster care in Gyeonggi Province, and 25 typical children (11 boys and 14 girls), aged from 5 to 8, who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The research findings are summarized as follows: First, in terms of mental representation, children in foster care showed less subjects of empathic relations and more subjects of disorganized aggression than typical children. Second, children in foster care showed lower coherence mental representation than typical children. Finally, children in foster care were more likely to fail in emotional regulation than typical children in mental representation.
This paper proposes an improved system for recognizing facial expressions in various internal states that is illumination-invariant and without detectable rue such as a neutral expression. As a preprocessing to extract the facial expression information, a whitening step was applied. The whitening step indicates that the mean of the images is set to zero and the variances are equalized as unit variances, which reduces murk of the variability due to lightening. After the whitening step, we used the facial expression information based on principal component analysis(PCA) representation excluded the first 1 principle component. Therefore, it is possible to extract the features in the lariat expression images without detectable cue of neutral expression from the experimental results, we ran also implement the various and natural facial expression recognition because we perform the facial expression recognition based on dimension model of internal states on the images selected randomly in the various facial expression images corresponding to 83 internal emotional states.
The study was designed to investigate implicit and explicit memory for words with processing theory. From experiment 1 to experiment 3,in a study phase, subjects first viewed stimulus words and were required to rate likeness of words of semantic processing task and to count lines of words of perceptual processing task.In a test phase, subjects were tested by implicit word completion task and explicit cued recall task.In experiment 1,levels of processing (LOP)effects were examined.Lop effects were obtained on the explicit memory tasks but not on the implicit memory tasks. In experiment 2,repertition of perceptual processing task influenced onlu implicit memory task.In experiment 3,bepertiotion of semantic processing task affected both implicit memory task and explicit memory task. These findings suggest that repetition effect of stimulus words are explanied better in dual process theory than transfer-appropriate processing theory.
The reason that an intelligent agent cannot understand the representation of its own perception or activity is caused by the traditional syntactic approach that translates a semantic feature into a simulated string, To implement an autonomously learning intelligent agent, Cohen introduces a experimentally semantic approach that the system learns a contentful representation of physical schema from physically interacting with environment using its own sensors and effectors. We propose that negation is a meta-level schema that enables an agent to recognize its own physical schema, To improve the planner's efficiency, Graphplan introduces the control rule that manipulates the inconsistency between planning operators, but it cannot cognitively understand negation and suffers from redundancy problem. By introducing a negative function not, IPP solves the problem, but its approach is still syntactic and is inefficient in terms of time and space. In this paper, we propose that, to represent a negative fact, a positive atom, which is called opposite concept, is a very efficient technique for implementing an cognitive agent, and demonstrate some empirical results supporting the hypothesis.
This paper examines the relation between memory and consciousness, especially the independence between memory and memory consciousness. First, the phenomena of memory performance without memory consciousness, next the phenomena of memory consciousness without memory representation are dealt with. They are examined both in special cases(e,g.,brain damaged patients, under hypnosis, etc.) and in normal cases. In both case, we can find that memory and memory consciousness are independent each other and that memory representation is neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for memory consciousness. Lastly, the roles of memory consciousness in our daily information processing are dealt with. Especially, the importance of memory consciousness in normal social life and the problem of self consciousness are discussed.
The present study examined the role of spatial attention in implicit memory for words when the word identity processing was not required. Spatial attention to the identity-irrelevant perceptual features of the words was manipulated by using a visual search task (Experiment 1) or a focused attention task (Experiment 2). In two e experiments. a significant priming effect was not found for the target words as well as for the distractor words. Implicit memory for words was not affected by spatial attention on the perceptual properties of the words. indicating that the word identity processing is required to produce priming.
