  • The main theme of this paper was to investigate the role of education as a source of economic growth in Korea. In this study, first, the objective mode was built by extending neoclassical Solow growth theory. Second, the capital deepening typical of an endogenous economic per-capita growth model was developed empirically for seven East-Asian economies as for the medium term, during $1975{\sim}2004$. And then we found the meaning of coefficients of growth factors, direct relative contribution of each input to per-capita growth in seven East-Asian countries, relative indirect contribution of education to per-capita growth in Korea, accounting for difference due to accumulation in Korea. The indirect relative contributions of secondary and higher education and R&D to per-capita growth change the results somewhat. Secondary education is still the largest single contributor 83.6 percent of predicted growth is due to secondary school enrollment in Korea. Primary education comes second with 37.5 percent and followed by higher education at -52.9 percent. Physical investment gives 62.3 percent and unimproved raw labor contributes only -1.4 percent.

  • This study investigated the mechanism and the degree of the effects of social capital on children's depression by using the Korean National Child and Adolescent Panel data Yr. 1. We predicted that the human capital of a child's family such as education and income would influence children's depression directly, and indirectly through family and community social capital. We further predicted that the influence of the community social capital would be exerted on the depressive symptoms more so through the family social capital. The findings suggest that both the human capital and the community social capital influence children's depression through family social capital more so than directly. The findings underscore the importance of the qualities of family relationship for a child's mental health and suggested family policies and intervention strategies that strengthen families.

  • In developing countries where many of these institutions exist in relatively weak form, the investment pattern of VCs in developing countries may differ from one of VCs in developed countries. Given this situation, the research question of this study is how venture capitals invest new technology based ventures in developing countries. To address the research question, our study employs insight from signaling theory and examines two ways. First, what are the internal value of new technology based ventures and the identity of endorsing organization signaling to venture capitals' investment in developing countries? Second, Do venture capitals play a pivotal role for the growth of new technology based ventures in developing countries? This study then tests these hypotheses using the new technology based ventures in Korea which is regarded as an example of developing countries in Northeas tern Asia. Entrepreneur's prior work experience in a related industry in the human capital variables and collaboration with business groups and certification of venture company in the endorsement variables result in obtaining venture capital's investment and superior new technology based venture's growth whereas entrepreneur's educational level has no effect on venture capital's investment and firm's growth.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of IFDI on the regional growth of 16 subregions in Korea during 2000~2014 by applying the System GMM. As a result of the analysis, the IFDI flowed into Korea has showed a positive effect on regional economic growth such as capital formation, job creation, and export expansion. but import has showed a negative effect. and Human capital has showed a positive effect but not statistically significant. meanwhile, IFDI which was flowed in the regions has showed a positive effect on the GRDP of DK regions including Daegu and Kyongbuk, while the GRDP of Metropolitan including Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi and BUK regions including Busan, Ulsan, Kyongnam has showed a negative effect. there were observed similar trends in the complementarities between IFDI inflows and human capital. This study has confirmed that IFDI flows into Korea are an important factor for regional growth, but the growth effect on GRDP in the region differs according to regional characteristics. Therefore, this study has suggested that it is urgent to reorganize the industrial structure along with the IFDI attraction strategy suitable for regional characteristics in order to expand the growth effect of IFDI flowed into the regions.
