Development of Mechanical Test Techniques for Irradiated Zircaloy Cladding in Hot Cell (조사 지르칼로이 피복관의 기계적 특성시험 기술 개발)

  • 고온 및 고압의 가혹한 방사선 분위기에서 사용되는 핵연료 피복관은 중성자 조사 및 수소화합물의 생성 등으로 인하여 기계적 성질이 저하된다. 따라서 조사된 핵연료 피복관의 손상기준 확립과 안전성 해석을 위해서는 연성 및 강도 등 기계적 특성을 정확히 이해하여야 할 필요가 있다. 핵연료 피복관의 종 및 횡 방향 인장특성 평가를 위하여 개발된 기존의 다양한 시험법들을 비교하고, 핫셀시험에 적합한 인장시험법을 개발하였다. 피복관의 종방향 인장시편은 튜브시편 또는 게이지부 내에서 균일한 변형률 분포를 얻도록 설계된 도그본 튜브시편(그림 1)을 사용한다. 피복관의 횡방향 인장시험에 사용되는 링시편(그림 2)은 게이지부 내에서 균일한 단축 원환변형율 분포 또는 평면변형율 조건을 나타내도록 설계한다. 연소 또는 조사된 피복관으로부터 시편을 제작하기 위해서는 핫셀 내에서 작업 이 가능한 방전가공기(그림 3)를 사용한다. 피복관의 종방향 인장시험용그립(grip)은 핀-부하형이며, 횡방향 인장시험의 경우는 시험 동안 시편의 곡률이 일정하게 유지 되도록 그립의 형상 및 치수를 결정한다(그림 4). 피복관의 종 및 횡방향 강도와 변형 등 기계적 특성을 평가하기 위한 응력-변형율 곡선은 시험기의 복합 강성(K)을 고려하여 결정한다. 이상과 같이 검토된 인장시험법은 피복관의 안전성 해석(safety analysis)과 관련 규정(regulatory)에서 사용되는 피복관 손상기준(fuel damage criteria)의 개선에 필수적인 자료를 제공한다.

High Strain Rate Tensile Test of Composite Material for Automotive Front End Module Carrier (자동차 프론트엔드모률 캐리어용 경량 복합소재의 고속인장 시험)

  • High strain rate tensile tests were performed to measure the strain rate sensitivity of fiber reinforced composite material. The composite material was developed for the light weight design of an automotive FEM(front end module) carrier. Standard specimens for quasi-static tests of fiber reinforced composites can be found in ASTM D3039. However, in case of high strain rate tests, it was hard to find standard specimen shapes. In this study, three kinds of tensile specimens designed based on ASTM D638 were investigated to determined the adequate gauge width of tensile specimen for fiber reinforced composite. A drop tower type of high speed tensile apparatus was developed for strain rates of about 15/s and 100/s. Gauge width of 6mm, 8mm and 10mm were investigated. Test results showed the specimen of 8mm width was adequate for the high strain rate tensile tests of fiber reinforced composite. It was found the strength of the composite material increased as the strain rate increased.

Forming Limit Evaluation of Copper Alloy for Liquid Rocket Combustion Chamber (액체로켓 연소기용 구리합금의 성형한계성 평가)

  • The dome stretching and tension test have been made to obtain a forming limit curve(FLC) for the copper alloy which is used for manufacturing the regenerative cooling chamber. For experimental survey of the forming limit curve, we have used in-plane tension specimen to obtain tension-compression strain state and also out of plane specimen to obtain tension-tension strain state through dome stretching test. All specimens are divided into longitudinal and radial direction specimens by the manufacturing method. The test results shows that in tension-tension region, copper alloy possesses a maximum major strain of 62.3% and maximum minor strain of 58.6%. In the tension-compression region, maximum major strain is 60.5% and maximum minor strain is 25.8%.

  • 원자로 압력용기 저합금강들은 원자로 가동 중 중성자 조사에 의해 재질열화 (material degradation)가 발생한다. 그러므로 계속적인 재질열화의 평가는 발전소의 수명을 예측, 평가하기 위해서 매우 중요하다. 그러나 표준시편을 이용한 인장시험, 충격시험 및 파괴인성 시험법 등은 조사시편의 크기 및 수량에 제한이 따르고, 높은 방사능으로 인해 시험편의 취급에도 제약을 받게 된다. 따라서 소형시편을 이용한 재료의 손상평가기술의 필요성이 부각되었고, 소형펀치시험(small punch test, SP test)은 그 중 하나의 유용한 시험 방법이다.(중략)

Theory and Practice in the Tensile Strength Test for Split Ring Shaped Rock Specimen (터진고리 형태의 암석시편에 대한 인장강도 시험의 이론과 실제)

  • In this study the split ring (SR) test was investigated for its applicability to the measurement of the tensile strength of rock specimen of NX size. The concept of the SR test is the same as the half ring (HR) test (Choi et al., 2019) except that the expected fracture plane is perpendicular to the loading direction. Because of this perpendicularity, however, it was believed that the SR test could be more accurate than the HR test. Like the HR specimen, the SR specimen is a curved prismatic bar with a uniform section. Appealing to a basic bending theory in strength of materials, the tensile strength for the special bar can be calculated analytically. Numerical simulations using LS-DYNA revealed, as expected, that the strength errors were 1% and 5% for the tensional and compressional SR tests, respectively, which were much lower than that (12%) of the HR test. To identify the performance of the two SR tests, laboratory experiments were conducted. The HR and Brazilian tests were also performed for comparison. The experiments showed that the ratios of the tensional and compressional SR to Brazilian strengths were 1.2~1.4 and 1.1~1.2, respectively, which are too small compared to empirical values in ordinary bend tests. Consequently, it is concluded that the SR test is not appropriate for use in tensile strength test of rock specimen of NX size. But the ratio of the HR to Brazilian strengths was within 1.7~2.0 for both the previous and present studies, showing a good consistency in their test results.

Evaluation of Notch Effect on the Dynamic Strain Aging Behavior of Carbon Steel Piping Material (탄소강 배관 재료의 DSA 거동에 미치는 노치 영향 평가)

  • In this study, tensile tests were performed using standard and notched-bar specimens under two different displacement rates and various temperatures, in order to investigate the effects of the stress and strain concentration at the notched section on the dynamic strain aging (DSA) behavior of carbon steel piping material. In addition, finite element simulations were conducted to evaluate quantitatively the stress and strain states for both types of specimen under uniaxial tensile loading. The results showed that serration and an increase in tensile strength, which are considered to be evidence of DSA in carbon steels, can be observed from tensile tests for notched-bar specimens. It was also found that the temperature region of DSA observed in the notched-bar specimens was higher than the DSA region observed in the standard tensile specimens tested under the same displacement rate. The results of finite element analysis showed that this behavior is associated with the high strain rate at the notched section, which is caused by the stress and strain concentration.

Formability Evaluation of a Copper Alloy for Regenerative Cooling Thrust Chamber (재생냉각 연소기 챔버 제작용 구리합금의 성형성 평가)

The test results showed that in the tension-tension region, copper alloy revealed a maximum major strain of 62.3% and a maximum minor strain of 58.6%. In the tension-compression region, the maximum major strain and the maximum minor strain were measured to be 60.5% and 25.8%, respectively.

Change of Tensile Strength for Rafter Pipes of Plastic Greenhouse according to Elapsed Period (경과년에 따른 비닐하우스 서까래 파이프 인장 강도 변화)

  • 비닐하우스의 골조를 구성하는 파이프는 부식을 방지할 목적으로 아연도강관을 사용한다. 그러나 시간이 지남에 따라 아연도금량 감소와 여러 외부 환경인자 등에 의하여 부식이나 침식이 진행되어, 외관상 녹이 생기고 강도와 연신율 등이 감소하게 된다. 이는 비닐하우스 전체의 내구성을 저하시키는 요인으로 작용하게 되는데, 이를 평가하기 위한 방법이나 기준은 미비한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 농업시설의 내구성을 평가하기 위한 방법의 하나로 각기 다른 경과년수를 갖는 비닐하우스로부터 채취한 서까래 파이프의 인장 시험을 실시하였다. 인장 시험에 사용된 서까래 파이프는 (구)시설원예시험장에 설치되어 있는 비닐하우스에서 경과년별로 채취하였으며, 지중매설부와 지상노출부로 구분하여 시편을 제작하였다. 인장 실험 결과 서까래 파이프의 경과년이 오래될수록 시편의 인장 강도는 작아지는 경향을 보이고 있으나, 파단연신율은 경과년과 연관성을 찾아보기 어려운 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 동일한 경과년을 갖는 서까래 파이프 시편에서 지중매설부의 인장 강도와 파단연신율이 지상노출부에 비해 대체로 작게 측정되었으며, 경과년이 증가할수록 인장 강도의 감소폭이 커지는 경향을 보이는 것으로 나타났다.

  • In the tensile test necking occurs at the maximum load point and non-uniform stress state is generated in this section. The equivalent stress becomes quite different from the axial stress as necking proceeds. Methods for obtaining the true stress-true strain curves, by overcoming difficulties due to the necking phenomena, have been developed by many authors. One of the methods based on the finite element analysis simulation is a very promising method. In this paper, general-purpose finite element program is used to simulate the tensile test. A round specimen and a flat specimen prepared from the same steel block are tested and simulated. The true stress-true strain curves are determined without assuming that the material follows Hollomon's law.

Infrared Thermographic Monitoring for Failure Characterization in Railway Axle Materials (철도차량 차축 재료의 파괴특성 적외선열화상 모니터링)

  • The wheelset, an assembly of wheel and axle, is one of important parts in railway bogie, directly related with the running safety of railway rolling stock. In this investigation, the tensile failure behavior of railway axle materials was investigated. The tensile coupons were prepared from the actual rolling stock parts, which were operated over 20 years. The tensile testing was performed according to the KS guideline. During tensile testing, an infrared camera was employed to monitor temperature changes in specimen as well as demonstrate temperature contour in terms of infrared thermographic images. The thermographic images of tensile specimens showed comparable results with mechanical behavior of tensile materials. In this paper, the failure mode and behavior of railway axle materials were provided with the aid of infrared thermography technique.
