  • This paper investigates the cracking and tension-stiffening behavior of 100 MPa shrinkage-compensated strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC) and conventional concrete tie elements in monotonic and cyclic tension. Strain and surface crack formation of tension ties were monitored with two strain displacement transducers and a photo microscope with a lens of magnification 50 times. Three different cement composites such as conventional concrete, shrinkage-compensated SHCC, and normal SHCC were used in the tie specimens to investigate the influence of the cement composite type on the tension stiffening and cracking behavior. Test results indicated that initial shrinkage of the ultra high-strength cement composites is greatly reduced as the 10% replacement of cement by the shrinkage-compensating admixture based on calcium sulfo-aluminate (CSA). The test results on the SHCC tension ties showed that the first cracking load decreases proportionally to the initial shrinkage strain. Reinforced ultra high-strength SHCC ties with the initial shrinkage compensation exhibited improved tension stiffening and smaller crack spacings, i.e. the reduction in crack width. Cyclic loading did not have a significant effect on tension stiffening and cracking behavior of tension ties with normal concrete and SHCC materials.

  • This study was examined the tensile strength change of a circular tubular member with artificial sectional damage on its surface to consider surface sectional damage by corrosion. The tensile strength tests were conducted using circular tubular specimens with artificial sectional damage considering sectional damaged height and width on its surface according to the corrosion level. From the tensile strength test results, it is confirmed that tensile strength of the circular tubular specimens was affected by the damaged circumference (damaged width), not damaged length (damaged height) and their tensile failures were appeared at the minimum section of the artificial sectional damage part. Nonlinear finite-element analyses were conducted considering equivalent sectional damage effect on sectional damaged part in tensile specimens to examine the change in the tensile strength of tubular specimens with artificial sectional damage since it is difficult to estimate the sectional damaged surface condition of the specimens clearly. From the nonlinear finite element analysis results for the tensile test specimens, tensile strengths of test specimens with irregular sectional damaged surface were relatively evaluated to be highly decreased than these of FE analysis model with equivalent sectional damage. Therefore, residual tensile strengths of tensile members with irregular sectional damage as local corrosion can be evaluated and predicted using correlation coefficient between tensile test results and FE analysis results with equivalent sectional damage.

  • Tension member is one of the most important elements in tension structure. An economical and reliable measurement method of a member's tensile force has yet to be developed, however. Several conventional measurement methods have some disadvantages when used for long-term, on-site measurement. A new tension-force measurement device was proposed to resolve measuring problems. Its principle was to use the bending part of the device as an elastic spring. The lateral deformation of the bending part due to tensile force can be measured to monitor the tensile force. This device was inserted in the tension member like a turn-buckle. Lateral deformation may be measured in the field at any time for the purpose of maintaining structures. Finite element analysis was used to design the shape and parametric study. Six specimens were tested within the elastic range. The test result showed that the elastic behavior or the bending part was consistent with the analysis' results.

  • In this papers, an analytical model which can simulate the post-cracking behavior and tension stiffening effect in a reinforced concrete(RC) tension member is proposed. Unlike the classical approaches using the bond stress-slip relationship or the assumed bond stress distribution, the tension stiffening effect at post-cracking stage is quantified on the basis of polynomial strain distribution functions of steel and concrete, and its contribution is implemented into the reinforcing steel. The introduced model can be effectively used in constructing the stress-strain curve of concrete at post-cracking stage, and the loads carried by concrete and reinforcing steel along the member axis can be directly evaluated on the basis of the introduced model. In advance, the prediction of cracking loads and elongations of reinforced steel using the introduced model shows good agreement with results from the previous analytical studies and experimental data.

  • Longitudinal elongation develops in reinforced concrete beams that exhibit flexural yielding during cyclic loading. The longitudinal elongation can decrease the shear strength and deformation capacity of the beams. In the present study, nonlinear truss model analysis was performed to study the elongation mechanism of reinforced concrete beams. The results showed that residual tensile plastic strain of the longitudinal reinforcing bar in the plastic hinge is the primary factor causing the member elongation, and that the shear-force transfer mechanism of diagonal concrete struts has a substantial effect on the magnitude of the elongation. Based on the analysis results, a simplified method for evaluating member elongation was developed. The proposed method was applied to test specimens with various design parameters and loading conditions..

  • The verification of serviceability of concrete structures requires more informations on the composite behaviors between concrete and reinforcement. Among them, the investigation of crack widths and spacings is based on the tension stiffening effects. In this paper, the tension stiffening effects of high strength concrete members with compressive strength of 80 and 100MPa are investigated experimentally. It was found that the current design code which is based on the tests of normal strength concrete may not describe the tension stiffening effects in high strength concrete correctly. The coefficient that can appropriately reflect the tension stiffening effects in the high strength concrete was proposed. Also, the crack spacing was investigated through the cracking behaviors and the crack width according to the difference of the strains in steel and concrete was estimated. The results of this paper may be used to examine the tension stiffening effects of high strength concrete members.

  • In the present study, the deformation capacity of slender shear walls with thin web was studied. As reported by other researchers, web-crushing and rebar-fracture, developing by inelastic deformation after flexural yielding, were considered as the governing failure modes of walls. To address the effect of the longitudinal elongation on web-crushing and rebar-fracture, the longitudinal elongation was predicted by using truss model analysis. The failure criteria by web-crushing and rebar-fracture were defined as a function of the longitudinal elongation. The proposed method was applied to 17 shear wall specimens with boundary columns, and the prediction results were compared with the test results. The results showed that proposed method predicted the maximum deformations and failure modes of the wall specimens with reasonable precision.

  • Splice of reinforcement is inevitable in reinforced concrete structures and, generally, lap splices are used. Lap length for tension splice is determined from development length in tension. The development length is calculated from an experimental model which was based on data of tests on anchorage and splice. Longitudinal reinforcements in flexural members are deformed and, therefore, prying action happens in spliced reinforcements unlike anchored reinforcements. The prying action induces tensile stress in cover concrete and this tensile stress plays the same role to a circumferential tensile stress caused by bond. Because splitting failure is assumed to occur when the summation of tensile stresses caused by the prying action and the bond is equal to the tensile strength of the concrete, the prying action reduces the bond strength of spliced reinforcements. A theoretical model for the prying action is developed and effects of the prying action on the bond strength are assessed. The tensile stress by the prying action is proportional to tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of reinforcements. In addition, the tensile stress is inversely proportional to spacing of reinforcements. Consequently, longer splice length is required for spliced reinforcements with small spacing in flexible members.

  • This paper provides test results on the tension stiffening behavior of high strength concrete (HSC) members used silica fume free binder (SFFB) instead of silica fume. The objective of this study is to evaluate the capability of replacing expensive silica fume to SFFB in HSCs with compressive strength of 60 and 80MPa. Test results indicated that for two mixes of 60 and 80 MPa HSC, cracking and strength behavior of tension members, which are replaced silica fume to SFFB, showed equivalent performance to those of tension members used silica fume.
