  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of time on shear bond strengths of a light-cured glass ionomer cement and chemically cured resin cement to enamel, and to observe the failure patterns of bracket bondings. Shear bond strength of a light-cured glass ionomer cement were compared with that of a resin cement. Metal brackets were bonded on the extracted human bicuspids. Specimens were subjected to a shear load(in an Instron machine) after storage at room temperature for 5 and 15 minutes; after storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 or 35 days. The deboned specimens were measured In respect of adhesive remnant index. The data were evaluated and tested by ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, and t-test, and those results were as follows. 1. The shear bond strength of light-cured glass ionomer cement is higher than that of resin cement at 5 and 15 minutes. 2. The shear bond strengths of both light-cured glass ionomer cement and resin cement increase with time. There was no significant difference in those of both 1 day group and 35 day group 3. Light-cured glass ionomer cement is suitable as orthodontic bracket adhesives

  • The fertilizer experiment was conducted to establish a pattern of a continuous application of organic matter in rice-barley cropping system. Fine textured gray lowland soil was used to grow the crops. The amount of nitrogen absorption and the yield of the crops were the highest in barnyard manure 1,000kg/10a. A correlation among the content of humus and nitrogen, the amount of nitrogen absorption, and the yield was significant while it was not significant among the the nitrogen content of the soil fertility, the total nitrogen, and the yield of crops. The result of this research suggests that revelation of available nitrogen after the decomposition of the organic matter depending on climate and regions should be studied for the organic matter application in due season.

  • Corrosion resistances in various acids and high temperature oxidation properties have been investigated for the Ni-base superalloy KM 1557. Corrosion tests were performed in $H_2SO_4$, HCl, $HNO_3$, $H_3PO_4$ and $CH_3COOH$. Oxidation tests were carried out in air for 20 and 110hrs at $900^{\circ}C$, $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. Hot corrosion tests were done in salt bath of 75% $Na_2SO_4-25%$ NaCl at $900^{\circ}C$ for 20hrs. After the tests, the samples were observed by optical microscopy and analysed by EPMA and X-ray mapping in order to investigate the distribution of composition. It was shown that corrosion resistances in various acids and hot salt bath were proven to be excellent. It was suggested that the amounts of oxides were determined mainly by the depth of internal and intergranular $Al_2O_3$ oxide layers.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of salivary contamination of etched enamel on shear bond strength of a bracket adhered to etched enamel. Eighty extracted human permanent premolars were used in this study. These samples were divided into two groups. Buccal surface of samples were etched in vitro with 38% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds and 60 seconds. Each group was divided into four subgroups. Etched enamel surfaces were contaminated with saliva for 0, 1, 20, 60 seconds, washed and dried. Test surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscope(SEM). The shear bond strength of each sample was determined with a universal testing instrument(Instron Co. Model 4201). Results were as follows; 1. Salivary contamination for 1, 20, 60 seconds did not affect shear bond strength when compared with the uncontaminated enamel group. 2 There was no significant difference(P>.05) in shear bond strength between 15 sec. and 60 sec. etching in uncontaminated enamel groups. 3. When samples were examined using SEM, organic materials coated enamel surface masked the etched pattern partially.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of additional etching procedure prior to Maxcem resin cement application in indirect restoration cementation using push-out bonding strength. One hundred and two extracted human molars were used to make indirect resin restorations of gold inlay and Synfony. These restorations were cemented using Maxcem and Variolink II. Additional etching procedures were done for one group with Maxcem. Three groups have 17 specimens in both restoration types. Push-out bond strength was measured using multi-purpose tester and calculated for bonding strength per sqaure-millimeter area. The mean bonding strength values were compared using SPSS 12.0K program for one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's Test with 95% significance. Under the condition of this study, the additional etching procedure prior to usage of Maxcem resulted in reduced bond strength for both of restoration types.

Studies on the Physico-chemical Properties and Characterization of Soil Organic Matter in Jeju Volcanic Ash Soil (제주도(濟州道) 화산회토양(火山灰土壌)의 이화학적(理化学的) 특성(特性) 및 유기물(有機物) 성상(性状)에 관(関)한 연구(硏究))

  • A series of laboratory experiment was conducted to find out the chemical composition, characterization of humic substances by physical and chemical methods and reaction of Na-pyrophosphate, $Ca(OH)_2$ and rice straw with albumin on the degradation of soil organic matter in the volcanic ask soils of the Jeju Island. Results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The contents of organic matter, available silicon, active iron and aluminum concentration in volcanic ash the soils were remarkably higher but available phosphorous was comparatively lower than the mineral soils. In volcanic ash soil, the contents of potassium, calcium and magnessium were higher in upland soil than that of forest soil. The ratios of active $Al^{{+}{+}{+}}/Fe^{{+}{+}}$, C/P and $K/Ca^+$ Mg were apparently high in volcanic ash soils while that of $SiO_2$/O.M. was high in mineral soil. 2. The carbon/nitrogen ratio in humin, humic acid content in organic matter, and carbon contents of humin in total carbon of soil organic matter were apparently higher in the volcanic ash soils than in the mineral soils, The total nitrogen and fractions of acid or alkali soluble nitrogen were remarkably high in volcanic ash soils while mineralizable nitrogen ($NH_4$-N and $NO_3$) contents were high in mineral soils. 3. The values of K600, RF and log K were also higher in volcanic ash soils than those in mineral soils, and the absorbance in the visible range were high and color was dark in the soil of which humification was progressed Extracted humic acid from volcanic ash soil was less reactive to the oxidizing chemical reagent and was persistance to the acid or alkali hydrolysises. 4. The major oxygen-containing functional groups in humic substances of volcanic ash soils were phenolic-OH alcoholic-OH and carboxyl groups while those in mineral soil were methoxyl and carbonyl groups. 5. Absorption spectra of alkaline solution of humic acid ranged from 200 nm to maxima 500 nm. Visible spectra peaks of from humic substances in the visible region were recognized at 350, 420, 450 and 480 nm. Only one single absorbance peak was observed in the visible region at 362 nm for Heugag series and two absorbance Peak were also at 360 nm and 390 nm for Yeungrag series. 6. Evolution of carbon as $Co_2$ was increased with addition of Na-pyrophosphate in Namweon and Heugag series, and "priming effects" took place on the soil organic matter decomposition by addition of rice straw with albumin in Ido series.

  • Manganese hydrogen phosphate hydrate, $MnHPO_4{\cdot}2.25H_2O$, is a major constituent of the pre-conditioning compositions for the manganese phosphate coating treatment over carbon steel substrate. This compound is conventionally produced by the synthesis in the aqueous solution process followed by the filtration and drying processes and a series of size reduction and classification processes in dry state. However, it is evident that the conventional process is neither environment-friendly nor cost-effective. In this work, a new process principle was examined based on the controlled double-jet precipitation technology to produce the manganese chemical product of fairly uniform particle size distribution in an aqueous solution media. The effects of stabilizing agents were comparatively studied by the scanning electron microscope analysis in a uniformity point of view of the resulting particle size. Polyvinylpyrrolidone and Gum Arabic were excellent in controlling the crystal growth step, resulting in fairly uniform size distributions of the particles from the controlled double-jet process.

  • In one group that tested for the effects of grinding and etching on the deciduous teeth, S.E.M. examination on the ground or unground labial surface of deciduous maxillary central incisors were made after etching procedure with 40% phosphoric acid for 60 secs., 120 secs., 180 sees. each. In another group that tested for the degree of resin penetration to the ground and etched deciduous teeth, composite resin application was done to the ground deciduous maxillary central incisors that had been acid-etched for 30 secs., 60 secs., 90 sees., 120 sees., 180 secs. each. The tooth-resin specimens were cut at the middle 1/3 of the crown by 2mm thickness, and the adjacent tooth materials were demineralized by 10% hydrochloric acid, the author observed the tags of the resin replica with S.E.M.. Following results were obtained. 1. After 40% phosphoric acid etching, the unground deciduous enamel surface showed various types of etching pattern. 2. For the formation of regular micropores on deciduous enamel surface by acid etching with 40% phosphoric acid, the time over 120 secs. should be requested. 3. After 40% phosphoric acid etching, the ground deciduous enamel surface showed the same etching pattern that has been a preferential removal of prism peripheries despite different etching time. 4. On the ground group that etched over 60 secs. to 180 secs., the length of tags was $5{\mu}m$ to $8{\mu}m$, with a mean of $7{\mu}m$.

  • 유럽의 폐차 처리 지침, RoHs 및 국내 친환경 소재 부품의 개발이 날로 가속화 되면서 종래 사용해 오던 인산염 피막 등 중금속이 함유된 코팅 재료는 점차 친환경 코팅 용액으로 전환이 되었다. 최근 자동차 산업 등에서 종래 중금속인 $Cr^{+6}$을 함유하지 않는 다양한 코팅 용액이 상용화 되고 있다. 그 중 가장 효율적으로 적용되고 있는 용액이 아연 flake를 첨가하여 희생 양극효과를 가능하게 하여 내식용 코팅 용액으로 상용화 하고 있다. 이 용액에는 내식성을 확보하기 위하여 희생양극이 가능한 소재 인 아연 분말을 첨가하며, 이 분말의 분산성이 소재와 코팅 층의 밀착성, 내식성에 결정적인 영향을 미친다. 특히 산업 현장에서는 아연 분말의 효율적인 분산을 위하여 24시간 이상 교반해야하기 때문에 생산성을 감소시키는 결정적인 요인으로 작용을 한다. 아연 분말의 분산은 용액 내에 첨가하는 각종 첨가제의 종류와 첨가량에 따라 현저하게 분산성이 다르기 때문에 첨가 원소에 대한 연구가 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 서로 다른 이종 합금을 첨가하여 각종 첨가제의 종류 및 첨가량이 분산에 미치는 영향을 조사하였고, 첨가량이 코팅 층의 밀착성 및 내식성에 미치는 영향에 대하여 연구하였다. 분산제 첨가량이 낮을 경우 용액은 두껍게 코팅이 되며 분산 거리가 짧아졌다. 이 경우 코팅 층의 박리가 쉽게 발생하며, 코팅 층이 불균일하였다. 1.7% 첨가량에서 최적분산효과를 얻을 수 있었으며, 1,000시간 이상의 내식성을 확보할 수 있었다. 분산성과 동시에 유동성 확보가 중요하며, 유동성 확보를 위하여 점증제의 첨가량에 대한 변화를 주었다. 최적의 첨가량은 1.5% 이상으로 이 경우 부식 발생시간을 억제할 수 있었다.

  • The effects of continuous restoration of sludge into the reclamating paddy soil and leaching test of sludge components by soil column were investigated. 1. The contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, C.E.C. and organic matter(O.M.) were increased in/on the paddy soil treated with paper mill sludge than non-treated. 2. Humic layer depth recognized by color showed the non-treated(10 cm), second year(15 cm) and third year(20 cm), respectively. 3. The effects of sludge treatment showed in the contents of O.M. such as non-treatment(0.9 %) < second year(1.39 %) < third year(1.75 %) in 10 cm depth. 4. All components in soil tested with column were increased by holding capacity of sludge, and the contamination effects of soil and ground water were not found by leaching test.
