  • Effective stresses may decrease due to generation of excessive pore pressure at the interface between soil and reinforcement in undrained condition such as rapid drawdownof groundwater level, resulting in the decrease in pullout capacity of the reinforcement. In this research, a series of laboratory pullout tests have been performed on different materials (clean sand, 5, 10, 15 and 35% silty sand), different overburden pressures (30, 100 and 200 kPa), and different drainage conditions (drained and undrained) in order to compare drained pullout capacity with undrained pullout capacity. The test results show that both drained and undrained pullout capacity are influenced by silt contents and increase with the increase of friction angle of the soil. The pullout capacity and the pullout displacement required to reach the peak value also increase as the overburden pressure increases. In undrained condition, the effective stresses acting on the reinforcement decrease as excessive pore pressures are generated, resulting in the decrease in pullout capacity and pullout displacement.

  • In order to ensure the stability of reinforced structures backfilled with low permeability soil, it is very important to determine the change in undrained pullout capacity compared to drained pullout capacity prior to design. In this research, a series of numerical analyses on laboratory pullout tests have been performed on different materials (clean sand, 5, 10, and 15% silty sand), different overburden pressures (30, 100 and 200 kPa), and different drainage conditions (drained and undrained) in order to compare drained pullout capacity with undrained pullout capacity. The results of numerical analysis also have been compared with the results of the laboratory pullout tests. The analysis results show that both drained and undrained pullout capacity are influenced by silt contents and increase with increase of friction angle of the soil and overburden pressure. In undrained condition, the effective stresses acting on the reinforcement decrease as excessive pore pressures are generated, resulting in decrease in pullout capacity; 57% for 30 kPa, and 70% for 100 and 200 kPa. These results show a good agreement with the results of the laboratory pullout tests performed under the same condition.

  • This research investigated the influence of the number of twist on single fiber pullout behavior of Twisted steel (T-) fiber and tensile behavior of high performance cementitious composites reinforced with the (T-) fibers (HPFRCC). Micromechanical pullout model for T- fibers has been applied to analytically investigate the influence of various fiber parameters including the number of twist on single fiber pullout behavior; and, to optimize the number of twist to generate larger pullout energy during fiber pullout without fiber breakage. In addition, an experimental program including single fiber pullout and tensile tests has been performed to investigate the influence of twist ratio experimentally. Two types of T- fiber with different twisted ratios, T(L)- fiber (6ribs/30 mm) and T(H)- fiber (18ribs/30 mm), were tested. T(L)- fiber produced higher equivalent bond strength (larger pullout energy) although T(H)- fiber produced higher pullout stress during pullout since T(H)- fiber showed fiber breakage during pullout. Tensile test results confirmed that T(L)- fiber in high strength mortar generates better tensile performance of HPFRCC, e.g., load carrying capacity, strain capacity and multiple micro-cracking behavior.

  • The nailed joints in wood construction are commonly designed to resist and carry the lateral load but also subject to withdrawal force like uplift load due to the wind. This research was conducted to evaluate the performance of nailed joint composed of dimension lumber and sheathing materials through the nail withdrawal and unsymmetric double shear joint test, and then compared to current design values. The withdrawal strength was greatly dependant on wood specific gravity, and the withdrawal strength of I-joist with OSB showed higher value in spite of low specific gravity. The maximum withdrawal loads were greater than that of derived current design values about 5 times. The lateral resistance of Japanese larch/OSB nailed joints was higher than that of SPF/OSB nailed joint, and derived allowable lateral strength of nailed joints in this study exceeded the current design values. The failure mode of nailed joints was primarily due to the nail bending and this tendency was notable in SPF/OSB nailed joint.

  • In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PGSN (Pressurized Grouting Soil Nailing) system is proposed. Effects of various factors related to the design of the pressurized grouting soil nailing system, such as the length of re-bars and type of reinforcement materials, were examined throughout a series of the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests. 9 displacement-controlled field pull-out tests were performed and the ratio of injected grout volume to grout hole volume were also evaluated based on the measurements. In addition, short-term characteristics of pull-out deformations of the newly proposed PGSN system were analyzed and compared with those of the ordinary soil nailing system by carrying out field pull-out tests. The test results were shown that the displacements of pressurized grouting soil nailing system were decreased 30~36% in comparison with using gravity grouting soil nailing system by the pressurized effect. The displacements of steel tube were diminished 31~32% comparison with using deformed bar by the reinforcement type change from the field pull-out tests.

  • For Determination of the ultimate uplift capacity, the failure mechanism of the foundation by uplift should be correctly known. However, studies on the variation of the failure mechanism with the embedment ratio of anchor plate among those factors governing the uplift resistance are scarce. In this study. in an attempt to observe more clearly the variation of the failure mechanism with embedment ratio and to check applicability of existing formulae for the ultimate uplift capacity. a model test was performed with ground made of carbon rods, simulating a plane strain conditions. As a result, failure characteristics of shallow and deep anchor conditions were clearly classified. It was found that the analysis of a shallow anchor should be made prior to determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of a deep anchor.

  • In this study, we constructed a database by collecting field pullout test data of the soil nailing using pressurized grouting, and suggested a method to estimate the ultimate pullout resistance using nonlinear regression analysis to overcome the problems of ultimate pullout resistance estimation using graphical methods. The load-displacement curve estimated by nonlinear regression showed a very high correlation with the field pullout test data. Estimated ultimate pullout load by nonlinear regression method was average 29% higher than estimated ultimate pullout load using previous graphical method. A sigmoidal growth model was found to be the best-fitting nonlinear regression model against rapid pullout failure. Further, an asymptotic regression model was found to be the best fit against progressive nail pullout. The unit ultimate skin friction suggested in this research reflected in the domestic geotechnical characteristics and the specifications of the pressurized grouting method. This research is expected to contribute towards establishing an independent design standard for the soil nailing by providing solutions to the problems that occur when using design charts based on foreign research.

  • This paper describes large scale pullout test results, in order to evaluate extensibility effect of strip-type reinforcement. The same test for ribbed steel strip reinforcement also is conducted to compare the friction resistance reinforcements' evaluation results. The pullout resistance of the ribbed steel strip reinforcement, which has a small cross sectional areas, was better than the friction resistance reinforcements' due to the bearing (passive) resistance. In case of friction resistance reinforcements, the pullout resistance of extensible reinforcement was better than inextensible reinforcement' even though they have a similar cross sectional areas.

  • In this study, the performance of group suction anchors installed in sand and subjected to pullout loading was investigated by numerical analysis. The group suction anchors consist of two or three units rigidly connected to each other in parallel array and the pullout resistances were compared with that of a single anchor. Parametric study was performed using numerical models to study the effect of the physical conditions of the group anchor. The parameters include the skirt length to diameter ratio of a unit suction anchor, the pad-eye location, inclination of loading and the spacing between unit suction anchors. The analysis shows that the ratios of the pullout capacity of double suction anchor and triple suction anchor to that of single anchor are 1.7 and 2.4, respectively. The ratio increases with the increase in the spacing between the unit anchors. The other parameters such as the skirt length to the diameter ratio, the location of the pad-eye and the loading inclination have negligible effect on the ratio of pullout resistances of the group anchor to the single anchor.
