  • This study was carried out to make fundamental data for structural safety test of pipe- houses. Experiment on the stress distribution of pipe- houses was conducted to find suitable structural analysis model by examination of end support conditions of pipe. Besides, the loading test and the pile driving test were done to find pull-out capacity and bearing capacity of pipe on the assumption that pipe is pile foundation. For single span pipe - house, the theoretical results assuming the end support condition of pipe is fixed under ground agreed closely with the experimental results of stress distribution. On the other hand for double span pipe -house, the end support conditions of pipe were fixed support when vertical load is applied, and hinged one when horizontal load is applied. The pull - out capacity and allowable bearing capacity of the pipe portion that was buried in the grounds that were soft soil of paddy field and medium or hard soils of dry field derived from experimental results.

  • The pullout test is a nondestructive testing method certified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and British Standards (BS). Research has shown that it is very reliable in terms of evaluating the concrete strength of reinforced concrete members. However, the pullout test is rarely performed on domestic construction sites due to the complex procedures and high costs involved. This study proposes a new pullout test composed of a post installable break-off bolt, an insert nut, and a pullout tester, which satisfy both economical and practical purposes on a construction site. Three different types of special fastening methods, a temporary fixed bolt, a plastic fixed panel, and a fixed bar, have been developed. A pullout tester is proposed that is driven by the circle force introduced into a handle composed of eight gears without a load cell and a hydraulic cylinder. The serviceability and reliability of these instruments were investigated through experiments at construction sites. Furthermore, the sample pullout test with a wall specimen was conducted to estimate the usefulness of the temporary fixed bolt type of fastening methods and pullout devices. Eventually, the developed instruments will be useful on construction sites if minor requirements are met.

  • In order to assess the possibility of using steel fibers in the fissured ciays, uniaxial compression tests were performed on both unreinforced and reinforced clay samples containing a pre-existing crack. Test results showed that the steel fiber reinforcement increased resistance to cracks initiation and their propagation, and therefore increased both stress at crack growth initiation and peak stress at failure. The increase in resistance to cracks initiation and their propagation was related to the arresting or deflecting the crack propagation in clay samples by steel fibers. A theoretical interpretation of experimental results was made using fracture mechanics theory and pull-out mechanisms in fiber reinforced materials. It was revealed that the steel fibers had bridging effect through their pull-out action that caused an increased resistance to the propagation of the cracks in the samples. The predicted pull-out force based on theoretical analyses agreed reasonably well with the measured values obtained from pull-out tests.

  • Steel pile foundations are widely used for offshore constructions due to their high bearing capacity and efficiency. Typically, offshore structures that have reached the end of their design life are required to be demolished. However, pile foundations are often left on site due to technical and economic limitations. The pile left on the site not only pollutes the environment, but can also cause obstacles for the construction of new structures. Therefore, research is required to completely eliminate these foundations at the site. In this study, a new type of double-wall pile foundation that can drastically reduce the pull-out load was conceptually proposed, and a series of model tests were performed to validate the performance of the double-wall pile foundation. The installation and extraction of the double-wall pile were simulated in dry sand in the model test, and the measured up-lift load was compared to that of the conventional pile. According to the result, the maximum up-lift load induced by the decommissioning of the double-wall pile was reduced by 45% when compared to the traditional pile in dense sand. This study verified the mechanism for reducing the up-lift load of the double-wall foundation and confirmed the possibility of completely decommissioning a pile that has reached the end of its nominal service life.

  • The micropile is small diameter pile foundation of which diameter is below 300 mm. This system has been applied to reinforce the foundation structure. In the present study, the effects of embedded conditions of group micropiles were investigated from a series of uplift load tests. For the study, uplift load tests were performed using group micropiles in various pile spacing and installation angle. The increase of uplift resistance and the reduction of uplift displacement were investigated in the tests. As the result, the resistances were principally changed by embedded pile angle, the resistance increase were 33%, 59% and 5% for $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ of embedded pile angle. The uplift displacement reduction increases with lower pile spacing condition and the reduction ratios of uplift displacements in the same spacing condition were 50%, 53%, -45% for $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ of embedded pile angle.

  • This paper describes the applicability of FEA(Finite Element Analysis) to the simulation of pile pullout behavior under various soil conditions (relative density and fines content), in order to evaluate reasonably the pullout resistance of pile. That is, the results of previous research (You et al., 2018) were analyzed by FEA under the same conditions. The FEA results showed that axisymmetric analysis using virtual ground was able to evaluate the skin friction of the pile. Also, axisymmetric analysis, which can apply the shear resistance characteristics of the pile-soil interface in various soil conditions, could be used as an analytical method that can simulate a reasonable pile pullout behavior. Therefore, the analytical model proposed in this study was able to simulate appropriately the pullout behavior based on the stress-strain relationship of the pile-soil interface.

  • This paper described a results of direct shear test and pullout test by using soil supported by drilled shafts in order to evaluate the effect of relative density and fines content on pullout resistance performance of drilled shafts. The result of direct shear test showed that the variation characteristics of internal friction angle and cohesion could be confirmed quantitatively. The result of pullout test also showed that the effect of relative density and fines content on pullout resistance performance of drilled shafts was confirmed. That is, the contribution of the internal friction angle and cohesion of soils on the pullout resistance performance of drilled shafts was found to vary, when the fines content was about 13% based on results direct shear test and pullout test. Therefore, at design of drilled shafts, the effect of skin friction resistance should be considered on the influence factor of strength parameters ($c-{\phi}$) according to the fines content of soil.

  • An almost permanent anchor (friction type) is resistant to ground deformation due to the friction between the soil and grout at a fixed length from the anchor body. The purpose of this study is to calculate the force of bearing resistance for a bearing anchor in enlarged boreholes. We conducted analytical and numerical analyses, along with laboratory testing, to find the quantities of bearing resistance prior to grouting in EBA (Enlarged Bearing Anchor) construction. The force of bearing resistance from the analytical method was defined as a function of general borehole diameter, expanded borehole diameter, and soil unconfined compressive strength. We also employed the Flac 3D finite difference numerical modeling code to analyze the bearing resistance of the soil conditions. We then created a laboratory experimental model to measure bearing resistance and carried out a pull-out test. The results of these three analyses are presented here, and a regression analysis was performed between bearing resistance and uniaxial compression strength. The laboratory results yield the strongest bearing resistance, with reinforcement 28.5 times greater than the uniaxial compression strength; the analytical and numerical analyses yielded values of 13.3 and 9.9, respectively. This results means that bearing resistance of laboratory test appears to be affected by skin friction resistance. To improve the reliability of these results, a comparison field study is needed to verify which results (analytical, numerical, or laboratory) best represent field observations.

  • The corrosion of reinforcements embedded in concrete causes severe deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. As a countermeasure, epoxy coated reinforcements are used to prevent corrosion of reinforcements. When epoxy coated bars are used, the resistance of corrosion is excellent, but epoxy coating on the bars have a disadvantage of reduction in bond capacity comparing to that of normal bars. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the bond performance of epoxy coated reinforcements through experimental and analytical methods. Bond behaviors of epoxy coated bars for various diameters of 13 and 19mm and thicknesses of cover concrete of 3 types(ratio of cover to bar diameter) are examined. As the diameters of the epoxy coated bars increase, the difference of bond strength between epoxy coated and uncoated bars also increases and damage patterns showed pull out failure. In addition, finite element analysis was performed based on the bond-slip relationship obtained by direct pullout test and compared with the flexural test results. It is considered that flexural member test is more useful than pullout test for simulating the behavior of actual structure.
