  • Socio-economic polarization in Korea partly due to recent globalization and industrial restructuring could reduce social mobility significantly through passing down educational achievement to one's children. Under the notion that residential segregation is geographical frame for the reproduction of educational inequality, this research investigates residential segregation by educational attainment and neighborhood disparity with a case study of Seoul. The statistical analyses employed local segregation measures such as Location Quotient and Local Moran's I and a variety of variables that reflect neighborhood characteristics. As a result, it found that there are sharp and clear contracts between low- and high-educational group concentrations/clusters particularly in terms of housing characteristics and educational facilities. This results provide some evidences that support the arguments about the causes of residential segregation by class in Korean Cities.

  • The purpose of this study is to systematically explain and discuss the return migration of Koreans in Central Asia to the Russian Far East. The Koreans' return migration is explained by the combination of push and pull factors inherent in the host and home countries. The structural or institutional push factors in Central Asia include the linguistic policy of a country, civil war, ethnic conflicts, while the micro ones are the Koreans' high concern of their children's education and the improvement of a socio-economic status. The macro pull factors operated in the Russian Far East are the permission to use the housing facilities and land previously controlled by military authorities and the laws of recovering the koreans' basic right and honor, while the micro ones are the networks of relatives and friends living in Central Asia and the Russian Far East. The two aspects related to the Koreans' return migration are also discussed. Firstly, the return migration of Koreans in Central Asia is interpreted as a migration of ethnic affinity. Secondly, the establishment of an autonomous district of Koreans in the Russian Far East is discussed.

  • A birth cohort approach to the Household life-cycle model could be an alternative to cross-sectional data. In this study, each residential mobilities of birth cohorts' is traced by the cohort data from repeated cross-section in the case of Jinju city. Because of the differences in fertilities by era, the volume of each cohort as a consumer in housing has varied and the condition of housing stock also has changed as the time goes by. These changes in housing make not only age effect stressed in Rossi's model, but also cohort and period effect. Due to theses effects of time, every residential mobility trajectories of generations' is different especially in earlier life stages. As households get older, it is found that the age effect reduces and the probability of residential mobility is lower. As this result, the residential succession and filtering between the earlier and latter generations is weakened and the residential segregation could be happened by birth cohort.

  • In this study, the structure and management of social group with each town, leadership with self-action and network with external organizations will be the main topic. Especially, the condition which make a communication with external organizations for localization is examined as an example of Mori village. As rice productivity has more serious problems than 1990s, many farming systems changed from rice productions to different kinds, like grapes. Particularly, this market and field started with the exchange system between local farms and cities because of the complex structure of grape circulation and increasing import for extra income. Extra income of farming is started to increase because of exchange program between local towns and cities. But, those works are concentrated on one or two leaders. It could be a burden for them. So. we need to change this into new system which the work is not concentrated to few leaders but distribute to everyone.

It first reviews the history of residence from the early 1900s to the present and the transition of residential boundary of the City of Busan. It then considers the characteristics of residential segregation and the important factors in it. The social class of pre-industrial society led the inequality of residential areas around the Eubchee. The existed Korean residential areas were separated by newly built-up residential areas in the Japanese colonial era. After the liberation from Japanese Rule and Korean War, rapid population growth made considerable slums across the City of Busan. These slums were an important factor to segregate residential areas from prosperous areas ever afterward. The socio-economic status has related to residential segregation through the formation of differential housing classes since 1990s. The historial analysis of these periods will offer an insight into how the dominant factors lead residential segregation in a specific period by promoting a more socio-economically integrated society.
