  • Science and technology policy a lot of implicit usjustified assumptions. These assumption without being reflected may cause various social problems. In this paper, lit is shown that philosophy of science could make contribution to resolving these problems. In epistemological viewpoints, theory of science and technology policy has been analyzed. I argue that social kinds, social entities appeared in social science should be interpreted realisticaly. Realizing this realistic interpretation of social kinds, as one field of social sciences, theory of science and technology policy can deal with the causal relation among social entities and the causal influence of science and technology policy more objectively- scientific knowledge has two components. One belongs to coded knowledge and the other belong to tacit knowledge which cannot be coded. I analyze the content and characters of tacit knowledge appeling to Michael Polany. One of the important function of science and technology policy is to make tacit knowledge more fruitful. I argue that philosophy of science fit well this function. Finally I claim that philosophy of science can help science and technology policy to reduce the ethical problems caused by science and technology.

  • This study was carried out to examine the development of physical knowledge in children. Eighty children aged 3- to 11-year-old and 16 adults were participated in this study. Participants' knowledge about failing, sliding and sinking/floating objects was investigated to understand what kind of knowledge they had, whether their knowledge was organized as theory and what was the nature of the developmental change in physical knowledge. Results showed that, for falling object task children of all age had correct knowledge about object's falling phenomena. However, there were age differences in children's understanding of the cause of object's falling. As the children's age decreased, the frequency of explanation referring to the absence of supper rather than the gravity as the cause of falling phenomena increased. For the sliding object task, children of all age could predict the motion of sliding object correctly. But only a few 9- and 11-year-old children could understand the effect of object weight and relations between gravity, frictional force and their interactions. Children under age 7 showed no evidence of possessing these knowledge. For sinking or floating object task, children of all age and even adults showed difficulties in understanding the sinking or float phenomena per se. For the cause of these phenomena although a few 9- and 11-year-old children referred to buoyancy as the cause, they had no correct knowledge about the buoyancy. This was also true for the adults. As a conclusion, the results of this study suggested that, not 3, but as young as 5-year-old children's physical knowledge exited as a form of naive theory in terms of their use as a causal devise in explaining the cause of object motion. However, even the theory of 9- and 11-year-old children was lack of the abstractness and coherence, which were also important characteristics of a theory. Finally, developmental change in physical knowledge proceeded toward more frequent and consistent use of physical knowledge as causal device and more abstract and coherently organized theory.

  • This study assessed the levels of knowledge and behavior about food safety, the factors influencing them and the causal relationship between them. The data were collected from 297 high school students in Gyeongbuk region by the self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of closed-end questions regarding each respondent's characteristics such as sex and grade, recognition on food safety, concern about hazardous elements towards foods and knowledge and behavior about food safety. The results of this study were as follows. Both levels of knowledge and behavior about food safety were not particularly high. The factors affecting the level of knowledge about food safety were mother's age and concern about hazardous elements towards foods. Grade, father's educational level, concern about hazardous elements towards foods, and the level of knowledge about food safety influenced the level of behavior about food safety. The results of the path analysis showed that grade and father's educational level directly affected the level of behavior about food safety. In addition, concern about hazardous elements towards foods had direct and indirect effect on the level of behavior about food safety On the other hand, the level of knowledge about food safety had an direct influence on the level of behavior about food safety.

  • Last year, a disastrous accident happened on the sea. Car ferry Se-wol which was on its way from In-cheon to Je-ju sank in the middle of the western sea. 304 passengers were drowned at the sea in the accident. There were no passengers who were waiting on board ship rescued in the accident. This study is to review the pattern of decision making in the middle of saving a life, right after Se-wol was about to sink. The starting point of this study is decision making on the rescue by rescue corps with no expert knowledge at the initial stage. When it comes to saving victims, there was no expert on rescue on the sea. Failure in rescue at Se-wol disaster lets us find a vicious circle of positive feedback loop. Experts with no experience act like well-qualified persons. Unqualified persons(leaders) have no expertise. Those who pretend to be expert occupy the important post in the hierarchy. It means we could not accumulate expertise of know-how in rescue division. That's why a vicious circle of positive feedback is formed in areas of disasters. It is necessary to train experts in Government Organizations to weaken the vicious circle of positive feedback.

  • Automation of programming-error detection is an important part of intelligent programming language tutoring systems. In this paper, a new programming error detection approach for novice programmers is proposed by plan matching and program execution. Program execution result is used to resolve the restricted programming plan representation and to provide a confirming evidence for the plan matching differences. By checking the values of shared variable between the related plans, we can detect the cause-effect relationship between the plans. With this relationship and the test data, we can explain the program's unexpected behaviors according to the bug's cause and resulting effects.

  • An event means a flow which has a time attribute such as the a symptom of patients, an interval event has the time period between the start-time-point and the end-time-point. Although there are many studies for temporal data mining, they do not deal with discovering knowledge from interval event such as patient histories and purchase histories. In this paper, we suggest a method of temporal data mining that finds association rules of event causal relationships and predicts an occurrence of effect event based on discovered rules. Our method can predict the occurrence of an event by summarizing an interval event using the time attribute of an event and finding the causal relationship of event. As a result of simulation, this method can discover better knowledge than others by considering a lot of supports of an event and finding the significant rare relation on interval events which means an essential cause of an event, regardless of an occurrence support of an event in comparison with conventional data mining techniques.

  • The goal of qualitative analysis is to capture and formalize qualitative and intuitive knowledge about physical world. Qualitative reasoning has been successfully applied to electric and mechanical mechanism domains, in which most of reasoning has focused on simulation. This paper introduces a qualitative comparative analysis technique which predicts how a change in a given situation propagates. We developed a comparative analysis technique which extends previous research by including a reasoning technique about the relative rate of the change of a parameter. Previous research focuses only on the relative change of a parameter. Causal model for the given situation is generated from qualitative domain model. The propagation by the change in causal relations are traced by applying our comparative analysis. By providing explanation as well as prediction for the given change, our technique is expected to be used in design, diagnosis, intelligent tutoring system, environmental evaluation.
