  • Computational studies on the hydrodynamic behavior of the forward-sweep inducers for the rocket-engine turbopump are presented in comparison with the conventional backward- sweep inducers. In the present study, two kinds of forward-sweep inducers are designed and numerically investigated. Forward-sweep inducers have bigger tip solidity compared to backward-sweep inducers even with shorter axial length due to their forward-sweep leading edge profiles. It is shown that back flows at the inlet decreases dramatically for forward- sweep inducers. And the low pressure region at the back flow are also decreased, which is assumed to promote the suction performance of the inducers. It seems that the hub located upstream of the tip at the leading edge induces pre whirl at the inlet blade tip for the backward sweep inducer. And this pre whirl leads to the big back flow.

  • In the previous studies, the validation of numerical codes has been conducted based on the qualitative comparison of predicted ice shapes with experiments, which poses a significant limit on the systematic analysis of ice shapes due to the variation of meteorological conditions. In response to this, the numerical code has been quantitatively validated against available experiment for the ice accretion on cylinders and airfoils in the present study. Ice shapes accumulated on the bodies are systematically investigated with respect to various icing parameters. To this end, maximum thickness, heading direction and ice thickness are quantified and expressed in the polar coordinate system for the comparison with other numerical results. By applying the quantitative analysis, similar shapes are intuitively distinguished. The developed numerical code underestimates the ice accretion area and the ice thickness of lower surface. In order to improve the accuracy, further accurate aerodynamic solver is required for the water droplet trajectories.

  • The evaluation of supercooled water droplet impingement characteristics of full-scale aircraft components in wind tunnels under icing conditions has been severely limited by the relative size of the component and the test facility. The concept of truncated airfoil sections has been suggested in order to extend the operational range of icing tunnels. With proper deflection of the small trailing-edge flap on the truncated airfoil the local pressure distribution may remain very close to that of the full-scale airfoil. In this study the shape of a truncated flapped airfoil is investigated for various deflection angles. To validate the truncated flapped airfoils, air flow and collection efficiency over the truncated airfoil are compared with the results of the full-scale airfoil obtained from the state-of-the-art icing simulation code.

  • The goal of this study is to improve flow and noise performances of existing backward-curved blade centrifugal fan system used for circulating cold air in a refrigerator freezer by optimally designing airfoil shape. The unique characteristics of the system is to drive cold airflow with two volute tongues in combination with duct system in a back side of a refrigerator without scroll housing generally used in a typical centrifugal fan system. First, flow and noise performances of existing fan system were evaluated experimentally. A P-Q curve was obtained using a fan performance tester in the flow experiment, and noise spectrum was measured in an anechoic chamber in the noise experiment. Then, flow characteristics were numerically analyzed by solving the three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations and noise analysis was performed by solving the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkins equation with input from the flow simulation results. The validity of numerical results was confirmed by comparing them with the measured ones. Based on the verified numerical method, blade inlet and outlet angles were optimized for maximum flow rate using the two-factor central composite design of the response surface method. Finally, the flow and noise performances of a prototype manufactured with the optimum design were experimentally evaluated, which showed the improvement in flow and noise performance.

  • A cascade apparatus was designed with only one blade. Its passage is a 160% width of the cascade pitch. This kind of apparatus can give more accurate experimental result than those applying multi-blades even though the apparatus is small. However, this causes difficulties to make the periodic condition along the pitchwise direction. In this study, sidewalls were designed to satisfy the periodic condition based on the flow structure using a gradient based optimization and a genetic algorism. The objective function was adopted the surface Mach number obtained on the cascade and fourteen design variables were selected for controlling sidewall shapes. The designed sidewalls using the genetic algorism shows better result.

  • The present paper describes the optimum inverse design of 2-D linear cascade airfoil. The pressure coefficient of an airfoil surface is taken as the objective function, and non-orthogonal incompressible Navier-Stokes equation is applied to calculate the pressure coefficient. Both of steepest descent and conjugate gradient method have been used to make the objective function go to zero. The 1st order finite differential method is applied to the searching direction and the golden section method is used to compute the searching distance. As a result of the present work, a good convergence to the target airfoil has been obtained.

  • Ice accretion on the aircraft components, such as wings, fuselage, and empennage, can occur when the aircraft encounters a cloud zone with high humidity and low temperature. The prevention of ice accretion is important because it causes a decrease in the aerodynamic performance and flight stability, thus leading to fatal safety problems. In this study, a shape design optimization of a multi-element airfoil is performed to minimize the amount of ice accretion on the high-lift device including leading-edge slat, main element, and trailing-edge flap. The design optimization framework proposed in this paper consists of four major parts: air flow, droplet impingement and ice accretion simulations and gradient-free optimization algorithm. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation is used to predict the aerodynamic performance and flow field around the multi-element airfoil at the angle of attack 8°. Droplet impingement and ice accretion simulations are conducted using the multi-physics computational analysis tool. The objective function is to minimize the total mass of ice accretion and the design variables are the deflection angle, gap, and overhang of the flap and slat. Kriging surrogate model is used to construct the response surface, providing rapid approximations of time-consuming function evaluation, and genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimal solution. As a result of optimization, the total mass of ice accretion on the optimized multielement airfoil is reduced by about 8% compared to the baseline configuration.
