Effects of Carbofuran Root-zone Placement on the Spider Populations in the Paddy Fields (Carbofuran 수도근부처리가 논거미 밀도에 미치는 영향)

  • Population density of the spiders (Micryphantidae and Lycosidae) in the two Paddy field at Suweon and Iri was studied following single root-zone application of carbofurans encapsulea and liquid-formulated and two to four paddy water applications of carbofuran to rice plants. In two field tests, the spider populations were reduced In all insecticide treatments. Among them, the reduction was greater in the capsule placement of carbofuran than in the liquid injection and broadcast of carbofuran. Their reduction was also enlarged with the increase of application rate of insecticide. The significant reduction of spider population in root-tone appliration of carbofuran was considered due to the food-chain toxicity on the spider-hopper system.

  • Recently, various new services based on ubiquitous computing and networking have been developed. In this paper, we contrive Adaptive PIR(Pyroelectric Infrared Radiation) Detection Algorithm (APIDA), a PIR-sensor based digital signal processing algorithm, that detects the movement of an invading object by the recognition of heat change in the detection area, since the object like person or car emits heat(i.e., infrared radition), We devised APIDA as a highly reliable signal processing algorithm that increases the successful detection rate and decreases the false alarm rate in the intruding object detection. According to performance evaluation experiment, APIDA shows the successful detection rate of 90% and low false alarm in the plain area.

The Effects of Early Enteral Feeding in Extremely Low Birth-Weight Infants (출생체중 1,000 g 미만의 초극소저출생체중아에서 조기장관영양의 효과)

  • Purpose : With the recent improved survival of extremely low birth weight infants(ELBWI), enteral feeding has become a major issue. This study investigates the effects of early enteral feeding in ELBWI on their morbidity, duration of hospitalization, and mortality. Methods : ELBWI admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Samsung Medical Center from November 1994 to April 2004 who survived more than 14 days were enrolled. ELBWI were divided into two groups : an early feeding group(EF), in which enteral feeding was started within 3 days after birth; and a late feeding group(LF), in which enteral feeding was started beyond 3 days after birth. 80 ELBWI came under EF, and 131 ELBWI under LF. Results : Birth weight and gestational age did not differ between the two groups. In EF, the time to achieve full enteral feeding and the duration of parenteral nutrition were significantly shorter than in LF. The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia was significantly lower in EF, but the incidences of sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and cholestasis were not different between the two groups. There was no difference in the survival rate between the two groups, but the duration of hospitalization was significantly shorter in EF. Conclusion : Early enteral feeding in ELBWI did not increase the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis, but rather decreased the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and shortened the duration of hospitalization.

Analysis of Palivizumab Prophylaxis in Patients with Acute Lower Respiratory Tract Infection Caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (Respiratory syncytial virus로 인한 급성 하기도 감염 입원 환자에서 Palivizumab 예방요법 유무에 따른 비교 분석)

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics of lower respiratory tract infection due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in young children and to provide information for an effective guideline for palivizumab administration in Korea. Methods : We reviewed medical charts of 167 patients under 3 years of age who were hospitalized in Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital for lower respiratory tract infection between January 2007 and February 2011. Diagnosis of the virus was made based on the multiplex real time polymerase chain reaction. Results : There were 113 patients who were infected by respiratory syncytial virus. 90 patients were term infants and 23 patients were preterm infants. No difference was shown between term and preterm infants except the days of admission which was 9.0${\pm}$6.0 days and 12.6${\pm}$21.0 days respectively. In the preterm group their mean age at the time of admission was 5.21${\pm}$4.9 months and the mean gestational age was 33.1${\pm}$4.3 weeks, and the mean birth weight was 2,152${\pm}$950 g. Only 4 patients were born under 28 weeks gestational age and were candidates for palivizumab administration. Conclusion : Most of the patients with severe RSV lower respiratory tract infection were term or near term infants who were not candidates for palivizumab prophylaxis. A nationwide study is needed to make a new risk stratified guideline for RSV prophylaxis for our country.

Effect of Virus Free Stocks of Sweetpotato Cultivated at Different Regions (지역을 달리하여 재배한 고구마 바이러스 무병묘 효과)

  • To analysis of virus free sweetpotato effect, 5 virus free sweetpotato and virus normal sweetpotato varieties were planted in 5 different regions at 2010 year. The average yields of virus free sweetpotato are showed different results according to regions. Sinjami which cultivated at Iksan were increased maximum 68% compare to normal. However, Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were decreased yield 11% compare to normal. Analysis of tuber formation ratio of Sinjami, Yenhwangmi, Singeonmi which cultivated in Nonsan were decreased tuber number compare to normal. However, 3 varieties were all increased on Average storage root weight and yield of marketable storage root. In the results of analysis of marketable storage root according to cultivated regions and varieties, all varieties except Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were increased yield. Also, quality of virus free sweetpotato were enhanced 7 to 9 compare to virus infected sweet potato which showing average 3. Contents of starch between virus free and virus infected sweetpotato were not affected by virus. Virus free sweetpotato were more increased starch products according to increased total production yield. Also, $Brix^{\circ}$(%) was not showing difference between virus free and virus infected sweetpotatoes. In this experiment, Virus free sweetpotato are enhanced production yields and quality. Therefore, we suggested that virus free sweetpotato is one of the methods to reduce damage by sweetpotato virus.

Yield of Tuber Roots and Functional Substances According to the Planting Interval and Cultivation Period in Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.) (재식간격 및 재배 기간에 따른 고구마 수량 및 유용성분 함량 평가)

  • To develop a cultivation method for the mass production of sweetpotato cultivars, 'Juhwangmi' (orange tuber) and 'Sinjami' (puple tuber), the yield of tuber roots and content of various functional substances were analyzed according to planting intervals and growing periods. For 'Juhwangmi, the total yield of tubers was increased by respectively 36% and 54% and the yield of tubers over 300 g was increased by respectively 170% and 221% in the 140-day and 160-day cultivation plots compared with that in the 120-day cultivation plot at the 70×20 cm planting interval. Similarly, the total content of beta-carotene in the tubers increased as the cultivation period was extended. In particular, beta-carotene content at the 70×20 cm planting interval was the highest. For 'Sinjami', at the same planting interval, the total yield of tubers and yield of tubers over 300 g significantly increased as the growing period was extended. Within the same cultivation period, the yield of tubers over 300 g and the total anthocyanin content of 'Sinjami' were higher at the 70×30 and 70×35 cm planting intervals than at the 70×20 and 70×25 cm planting intervals in the 140-day and 160-day cultivation plots. Moreover, the total polyphenol and flavonoid content was significantly higher in 'Sinjami' than in 'Juhwangmi', and the values were the highest in the 160-day cultivation plots. In particular, the content of these two functional substances in tubers over 300 g was the highest at the 70×30 and 70×35 cm planting intervals.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Sasang constitution and body composition of the two groups devided by chest PA. Method : This study was carried out on 60 students of Semyung University. The students were selected according to the aspect ratio of rt. lung from chest PA. They were divided into two groups(length group and width group) and administered QSCCII & body composition analysis. Result : The 30 students of the length group were classified as Soumin(15), Soyangin(9), and Taeumin(6). The 30 students of the width group were classified as Taeumin(20), Soyangin(9), and Soumin(1). In the width group, weight, total body water, amount of total body fat, muscles, viceral fat area(VFA), waist hip ratio(WHR), were significantly higher than in the length group. Conclusion : There were significant relationships between the shape of lung and constitution and body composition. These findings indicate that actual organ condition could be expressed in body shape.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between parenting behaviors and peer relations among adolescents. The subjects of this study were middle school students who reside in Seoul. 425 self reported questionnaires were used for final analysis. Findings of this study from structural equation modeling analysis indicated that parenting behaviors affected self-esteem. Self-esteem of adolescents influenced peer relations. This study showed that self-esteem mediated the relationship between parenting behaviors and peer relations.

  • In this work we consider the mathematical formulation and numerical resolution of the linear feedback control problem for Boussinesq equations. The control is achieved by means of a linear feedback law relating the body forces to the velocity and temperature field, i.e., $$f=-{\gamma}_1(u-U),\;\;{\tau}=-{\gamma}_2({\theta}-{\Theta}}$$ where (U,$\Theta$) are target velocity and temperature. We show that the unsteady solutions to Boussinesq equations are stabilizable by internal controllers with exponential decaying property. In order to compute (approximations to) solution, semi discrete-in-time and full space-time discrete approximations are also studied. We prove that the difference between the solution of the discrete problem and the target solution decay to zero exponentially for sufficiently small time step.

  • Meningococcal disease is not rarely associated with abnormalities of the complement system. We experienced a case of C9 deficiency with meningococcal meningitis from a 12-year-old girl. Identification of complement deficiency has implications for management, including family studies, prophylaxis, vaccination, and altered threshold for infection screening and treatment.
