  • In this paper, a 2-dimensional edge-based matching algorithm is proposed that combines the generalized Hough transform (GHT) and the Chamfer matching to complement weakness of either method. First, the GHT is used to find approximate object positions and orientations, and then these positions and orientations are used as starling parameter values to find more accurate position and orientation using the Chamfer matching. Finally, matching accuracy is further refined by using a subpixel algorithm. The algorithm was implemented and successfully tested on a number of images containing various electronic components.

  • Matching spots between two sets of 2-dimensional electrophoresis can make it possible to find out the generation, extinction and change of proteins. Generally protein spots are separated by 2-dimensional electrophoresis. This process makes the position of the same protein spot a little different according to the status of the tissue or the experimental environment. Matching the spots shows that the relation of spots is non-uniform and non-linear transformation. However we can also find that the local relation preserves the topology. This study proposes a matching method motivated by the preservation of the topology. To compare the similarity of the topology, we compared the distance and the angle between neighbour spots. Experimental result shows that the proposed method is effective.

  • This paper proposes a robust oriented Hausdorff measure (ROHM) for 20D object matching. The ROHM is introduced by replacing the distance concept of the conventional Hausdorff distance (HD) algorithm by the accumulation scheme of the Hough transform (HT). The proposed algorithm can be considered as the modified directed HT using the distance transform (DT). The orientation information at each pixel is also used for removing incorrect correspondences. Experiments with various test images show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of conventional HD algorithms considered.

  • Proteins in a cell appear as spots in a two dimensional gel image which is used in protein analysis. The spots from the same protein are in near position when comparing two gel images. Finding out the different proteins between a normal tissue and a cancer one is important information in drug development. Automatic matching of gel images is difficult because they are made from biological experimental processes. This matching problem is known to be NP-hard. Neural networks are usually used to solve such NP-hard problems. Hopfield neural network is selected since it is appropriate to solve the gel matching. An energy function with location and distance parameters is defined. The two spots which make the energy function minimum are matching spots and they came from the same protein. The energy function is designed to reflect the topology of spots by examining not only the given spot but also neighborhood spots.

  • This paper presents a method for designing circular template used in similarity measurement for image registration. Circular template has translation and rotation invariant property, which results in correct matching of control points for image registration under the condition of translation and rotation between reference and sensed images. Circular template consisting of the pixels located on the multiple circumferences of the circles whose radii vary from zero to a certain distance, is converted to two-dimensional Discrete Polar Coordinate Matrix (DPCM), whose elements are the pixels of the circular template. For sensed image, the same type of circular template and DPCM are created by rotating the circular template repeatedly by a certain degree in the range between 0 and 360 degrees and then similarity is calculated using mutual information of the two DPCMs. The best match is determined when the mutual information for each rotation angle at each pixel in search area is maximum. The proposed algorithm was tested using KOMPSAT-2 images acquired at two different times and the results indicate high accurate matching performance under image rotation.

  • In this paper, we propose a VLSI array architecture for high speed processing of FBMA. First of all, the sequential FBMA is transformed into a single assignment code by using the index space expansion, and then the dependance graph is obtained from it. The two dimensional VLSI array is derived by projecting the dependance graph along the optimal direction. Since the candidate blocks in the search range are overlapped with columns as well as rows, the processing elements of the VLSI array are designed to reuse the overlapped data. As the results, the number of data inputs is reduced so that the processing performance is improved. The proposed VLSI array has (N$^2$+1)${\times}$(2p+1) processing elements and (N+2p) input ports where N is the block size and p is the maximum search range. The computation time of the rat reference block is (N$^2$+2(p+1)N+6p), and the block pipeline period is (3N+4p-1).

  • Performance evaluation of inexpensive LCTV to function as a two-dimensional spatial light modulator is performed. Correction of the phase distortion of the device is performed using the substrate of hologram plate and index matching oil. A new method for eliminating electrode grid pattern that incorporates phase conjugation in a BaTiO3 crystal is proposed and experimented.

  • We evaluated the overall setup accuracy for the On-Board Imager (OBI, Varian Medical Systems Inc., Palo Alto, CA, USA), with attention to the laser, the gantry, and operator performance. We let experienced technicians place the marker block on the couch using a lock bar system, with alignment to the isocenter of the laser, every morning. A pair of radiographic images of the marker block was acquired at $0^{\circ}$ and $270^{\circ}$ angles to the kV arm to correct the position using a 2D/2D matching technique. Once the desired match was achieved, the couch was moved remotely to correct the setup error and the parameters were saved. The average for the vertical and the longitudinal displacements were 0.65 mm and 0.66 mm, and 0.01 mm for the lateral displacement. The average for the vertical and longitudinal displacements were statistically significant at the 0.05 level (p value=0.000 for both), while the p value for the lateral direction was 0.829. These results show that the tendencies to displacement in vertical and longitudinal directions occur through systematic error, while systematic error was not found in the lateral displacement. This daily overall evaluation is practical and easy to find the systematic and random errors in the setup system; however, a daily QA for laser and OBI alignment is still needed to minimize the systematic error in aligning patients.
