The Plan of U.S. Navy Aegis warship Modernization (미 해군의 이지스함 현대화 계획)

  • U.S. Navy had constructed 27 aegis cruisers from USS Ticonderoga(CG-47) and has been constructing aegis destroyers from USS Arleigh Burke(DDG-51). The aegis warships are the core anti-air forces of U.S. navy since 1983, the year of first aegis cruiser launching. U.S. Navy has been modernizing aegis warships to cope with advanced air threats. In this paper, it is reported that current status and analyzed report of U.S. Navy's aegis warships and aegis modernization plan.

  • 이지스 시스템은 미국이 고성능 대함 미사일을 함정에서 요격하기 위하여 개발한 함정용 대공 방어 시스템이다. 이지스(Aegis)는 그리스 신화에 나오는 방패(모든 사악한 것으로부터 몸을 지킨다는 방패)로, 중앙에 괴물 고르곤(Gorgon)의 머리 모양이 그려져 있다. 고르곤은 머리털이 뱀이며 그 눈을 본 사람은 무서운 나머지 돌로 변했다고 전해지는 스테노(Stheno), 에우리알레(Euryale), 메두사(medusa) 등 3자매중 하나를 말한다. 이 방패는 처음에 제우스(Zeus)가 소유하였으나, 뒤에 자신의 딸인 지혜.예술.전쟁의 여신 아테나(Athena)에게 주었다. 이지스 시스템은 요격용 대공 미사일인 Standard Missile SM-MR(RIM-66시리즈)과 위상 배열 레이다 SPY-1을 중심으로 하여, 그 외의 함내 센서(탐지 장치), 전술 정보처리장치 등 많은 무기 체계의 기능을 통합시킨 집합체이며, 이 위상 배열 안테나는 이지스 시스템의 상징으로 되어 있다. 현재 미국 해군의 Ticonderogal(CG-47)급 순양함, Arleigh Burke(DDG-51)급 구축함, 그리고 일본 해상 자위대 Kongo(DD-173)급 구축함에 탑재되어 작전의 효율성을 높이고 있다.

  • Since the first Aegis Cruiser USS Ticonderoga was constructed, Arleigh Burke class destroyers are being mass constructed as U.S. Naval capital surface ships and consistently improved the performance. In recent years, the newest aegis combat system, Baseline 9, was deployed. Aegis BMD, aegis ships which have BMD capability, is participated BMDS(Ballistic Missile Defense System) as a sea based BMD. And AN/SPY-1D will be replaced by AMDR(Air & Missile Defense Radar), advanced anti-air radar system to defend effectively against increased ballistic missiles threat from DDG-51 Flight III. In this paper, development status and technical characteristics of each type of aegis ships are researched and characteristics of AMDR are surveyed and described.

  • U.S. is constructing EPAA(European Phased Adaptive Approach) as a part of BMDS(Ballistic Missile System). The purpose of EPAA is to protect European NATO territory from Iranian ballistic missile threats. EPAA project consists of three phase, $1^{st}$ phase is completed as deploying transportable forces such as aegis BMD ships at the mediterranean, and $2^{nd}$ phase is on going. In this paper, the concept, characteristics, current status and future works of EPAA are surveyed and described.

  • 현재 미 해군에서 개발 중인 DD21은, 미 해군의 해상 전투력 구조의 핵심인 이지스급 함정을 제외한 DD-963급 구축함과 FFG-7급 프리깃 함의 교체함으로서, 연안전에 대한 새로운 특수 임무에 적응할 수 있게 많은 학자들에 의해 연구되고 있는 차세대 구축함이다. 즉, DD21은 기존 이지스 함정에 부가하여 대지전(Land Attack)과 대기뢰전을 포함한 다목적의 기능을 발휘하면서 전투원의 스마트(Smart), 배치와 장비와 기구의 자동화와 기계화를 통한 함정과 함체의 스텔스(Stealth)화로 유지비와 초기 투자비를 최소화시킨 함정이다.

  • Because of recent interests in energy conservation and prevention of environmental pollution, research related to these topics is increasing. The U.S. Navy has started to study the HED (hybrid electric drive) system in order to improve the COGAG propulsion system's fuel efficiency in AEGIS destroyers. (This ship's fuel consumption is 40% of the total fuel consumption of the U.S. Navy.) In addition, the Korean Navy is considering applications of the HED system in AEGIS destroyers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the U.S.A.'s HED system and to simulate its generating mode energy saving rate using LabVIEW. The results confirmed that the fuel savings are about 700 kg/h.

  • Arleigh Burke(DDG-51) and Sejong warship are AEGIS destroyer of US Navy and Korea Navy. These are designed to make more than 30knots by applying a COGAG(COmbined Gas turbine And Gas turbine) system. However, the gas turbine(LM2500) in this system has a low SFC (Specific Fuel Consumption) when the warship operated low speed. So, many kinds of companies are researching the HED(Hybrid Electric Drive) system to improve this problem. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the HED system and simulate by Sejong warship data. Serveral methods were used for that purpose. More specifically, the equipment modeling are employed for regression analysis by LabVIEW. As a result, it was found that the warship installed HED system could cut their fuel bills by as much as about 80,000,000won per year.
