The study of bilingual learning of mathematics at International High School in South Korea (한국 국제학교에서의 이중 언어를 활용한 수학학습에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated results of bilingual learning of mathematics in teaching quadratic functions at an international high school in South Korea. Unlike a Korean traditional public school, this international school has provided bilingual learning. 10th grade students enrolled two math classes, Algebra II that was taught in English through CCSS and High School Mathematics I that was taught in Korean through the Korean National Math Curriculum. In order to collect information on students' behaviors and math achievement, we analyzed students' academic back grounds, mathematical abilities, results of interviews, observations, questionnaires and assessments. The results of this study include specific benefits. Bilingual learning of mathematics is effective as a method to improve Korean students' mathematical abilities and attitudes as well as positive influence on Korean mathematics education.

The Processing System of English for Korean: Focused on the Interaction with Native Language Processing (한국인의 영어처리의 기제: 모국어처리와의 상호작용을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of phonology in lexical access of bilingual processing for Korean-English bilinguals. Four experiments have been conducted in order to adjudicate the nonselective lexical access hypothesis, which argues simultaneous phonological activation of two bilingual languages, and the selective lexical access hypothesis. which argues phonological activation of only one bilingual language. The results showed that the Korean target word processing was significantly affected by the phonological manipulation of the English target word(Exp. 2). Similarly, the English target word processing showed the tendencies that it is affected by the phonological manipulation of the Korean prime word(Exp. 2). This results indicates that the phonological information of another bilingual language is automatically activated when we process one of bilingual languages, and the process of English which is the second language for most Korean, is phonologically activated.

  • 외국문명의 영향으로 많은 외래어가 한국어 문서 내에서 사용되고 있으며, 이러한 단어는 주로 전문용어, 고유명사, 신조어 등으로 사전에 등록되지 않는 것이 많다. 본 논문에서는 이중언어 코퍼스로부터 자동으로 외래어 사전을 추출해 내는 확률적 정렬 방법과 실험결과를 소개한다. 확률적 정렬 방법은 통계적 음차 표기 모델에서 사용된 방법을 변형하여 적용한 것이며, 문서단위로 정렬된 두 종류의 영-한 이중언어 코퍼스에 대해 실험하여 재현률과 정확률을 측정하였다 성능은 전처리단계인 한국어 미등록어 추정에 영향을 많이 받았는데, 미등록어 추정을 대략하였을 경우, 재현률은 평균 58%였고, 정확률은 평균74%이었으며, 수동으로 미등록어 명사를 분리했을 경우, 재현률 평균86%, 정확률 평균91%로 외래어와 대응되는 원어를 추출해 냈다.

The Language Development of Bilingual Children Speaking Korean and English (이중언어(한국어-영어)를 하는 아동의 언어능력발달에 관한 연구)

  • This study compared the English and the Korean receptive competency of bilingual children with that of English and Korean monolingual children, respectively. The relation between English and Korean receptive competency of bilingual children was examined by age and gender. Subjects were 27 bilingual, 30 Korean monolingual, 24 English monolingual children. They were administered the revised form of the Peabody Pictures Vocabulary Test in Korean and English versions. Results show that bilingual children's Korean receptive competency is lower than those who spoke only Korean, and bilingual children's English receptive competency was a little lower than those who spoke only English, but the difference narrowerd with age. The relation between Korean and English competency in bilingual children was negative in 4- and 5-year-olds but became positive in 6-year-olds. This study shows that the two points-of-view on bilingual language development should be applied differently depending on children's age.

  • 통계기반 기계번역 시스템 (SBMT system)은 기계번역시스템 중에서 최근 활발히 연구되고 있는 분야이다. 통계기반 기계번역은 대용량의 말뭉치를 사용할 수 있어 특정 언어 쌍에 제한을 덜 받아 모델을 자동으로 학습할 수 있으며 다른 언어에 일반화하여 적용이 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 그러나 영어와 한국어 간 통계기반 기계번역에 있어서는 어순의 차이로 인한 문제를 해결할 필요성이 여전히 남아 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 영어와 한국어 간 이중언어 말뭉치를 구축하고 통계기반 기계번역 훈련 시스템인 Moses 에 기반하여 구현한 베이스 시스템을 이용하여 이중언어 간 어순처리 및 단어정렬의 최적화 방안을 연구하였다.

The Semantic System in Late Korean-English Bilinguals (후기 한국어-영어 이중언어자의 의미체계)

  • The present study was aimed to compare the semantic systems represented by the lexicon between L1 and L2 in late Korean-English bilinguals. The participants performed the word-picture matching task. the task was to decide whether the pictures represent the previously presented words' meaning. The words were the basic level categories. The stimuli were consisted of common object belonged to two different semantic categories (natural and artificial). To control the translation strategies, the SOA were manipulated as 650ms(Exp. 1) and 250ms(Exp. 2). No translation effort was found in the comparison of the two experiments. In both experiment, the RTs were faster in L1 rendition, and it took longer to decide the stimuli in natural categories than with artificial ones in L1. However, this category effect was not observed in L2. The results showed the differences in the organization of semantic representations in the brain through the bilinguals' two languages. While L1 semantic knowledge might be more systematically organized, that of L2 seems to be less well organized, at least by late bilinguals who participated in the present study.

  • 기존의 데이터베이스 응용 프로그램을 작성할 경우에 질의 언어와 개발 언어간의 이중 언어 정의 문제(impedance mismatch)가 발생한다. 이를 해결하기 위한 한가지 방법으로 본 논문에서는 Haskell의 리스트 컴프리헨션(list comprehension)을 이용한 데이터베이스 접근을 제안한다. 이 방식을 이용할 경우 문법 체계가 명확해 진다는 장점과 연속적인 집계연산자(aggregate operator)를 사용할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 또한 앞에서 지적한 이중 언어 정의 문제를 해결할 수 있다.

  • 이중주어 문장이란 하나의 용언이 두 개의 주격조사를 취하는 경우를 말한다. 이러한 이중주어 현상은 영어권에서는 없는 현상으로, 한국어 분석 측면에서 어려움을 야기할 뿐 아니라, 자동 번역 측면에서도 반드시 고려되어야 하는 현상이다. 그러나 이중주어의 분석에 대한 기존 연구는 국어학 분야에서만 진행되었을 뿐 자연어 처리분야에서는 다루어진 적이 없다. 본 논문에서는 이중주어 현상에 대한 분석을 통해, 이중주어 현상이 한국어 문장에서 빈번히 발생하는 현상이며, 기존의 ‘명시-격조사-용언’으로 구성되는 공기정보만으로는 이중주어 문장을 올바로 분석할 수 없음을 보인다. 이를 해결하기 위해 본 논문에서는 이중주어의 특성을 파악하고, 이들 특성에 맞게 ‘명사-격조사-용어’ 공기정보뿐 아니라 명사들 간의 공기정보 및 관형형 용언과 명사 공기정보, 그리고 주격조사의 교체를 통한 이중주어 분석 방법을 제안한다.

A Test of Hierarchical Model of Bilinguals Using Implicit and Explicit Memory Tasks (이중언어자의 위계모형 검증 : 암묵기억과제와 외현기억과제의 효과)

  • The study was designed to investigate implicit and explicit memory effec representations of bilinguals. Hierarchical model of bilingual information processing word naming and translation tasks in the context of semantically categorized or rar Experiments 1 and 2, bilinguals first viewed stimulus words and performed naming or tr then implicit and explicit memory tasks. Finding Ways to Improve the Bilingual Teaching and Learning Method of Children of Multicultural Families Applying Waldorf Education

  • At present, our society is reducing the birth rate, and the school population is decreasing, but multicultural students are facing the increasing social phenomenon. We all need to make sure that bilingual teaching and learning is effective for children of multicultural families who need to live in the days of Phono Sapiens so that they can live confidently as members of our society. To this end, there is a great need for a bilingual teaching and learning method that enables children from multicultural families to be free from language and cultural prejudice and to actively communicate and interact. In this paper, we propose a customized bilingual education method that applies various teaching and learning methods according to the development cycle, school age, and Korean language ability of children of multicultural families. The proposed bilingual teaching method for children of multicultural families is a teaching and learning method that applies the Waldorf teaching principle.
