  • A new series of ion separation membrane materials based on pheonoxy and trifluoroethoxy co-substituted polyphosphazene has been designed and synthesized. The polymers were characterized by $^{31}P$ NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and get permeation chromatography. The basic phosphazene membranes were sulfonated to obtain better hydrophilicity and ion-selectivity. The membrane from $[NP(OC_6H_4SO_3H)_{1.58}(OCH_2CF_3)_{0.42}]_n$ gave excellent values of ion transport number, area resistivity, and also ion exchange capacity, compared with the commercial membranes.

  • Polyetherimide (PEI) membranes for separators in Zn air batteries were prepared via phase inversion process from casting solution composed of PEI, n-methylpyrolidone (NMP), and polyvinylpurrolidone (PVP). Furthermore, Zn air batteries were fabricated with the separators. The effects of PEI content and PVP addition in the casting solution on the morphology, mechanical strength, ionic conductivity were investigated through SEM, stress-strain test and ac impedance test. The elelctrochemical performances of the batteries were evaluated through galvanostatic discharge analysis. The mechanical strength of the membrane increased with increasing PEI composition in the casting solution. Little effect of PVP addition into the solution on the mechanical strength of the membrane was investigated. The ionic conductivity value decreased with increasing PEI composition in the solution. With addition of PVP, ionic conductivity of membrane increased until 10 wt% to show the maximum value of 0.1 S/cm. In the higher range of PVP addition over 10%, the ionic conductivity decreased with increasing PVP addition. Ionic conductivity of separator strongly affected the capacity of Zn air battery, and the battery assembled with the separator which showed high ionic conductivity showed high capacity.

  • Separators, which produces physical layer between a cathode and anode, are getting enormous attention as the quality of the separator determines the performance of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Porous membranes based on polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are generally utilized as the separator of LIBs because of their high electrochemical stability and suitable mechanical strength. However, low thermal resistance and wettability of PE and PP membranes limited the potential of LIBs. Operating at the temperature exceeding the melting point of membranes, the separators change their structures which lead to short circuit of LIBs. Low wettability of the separators corresponds to low ionic conductivity which increases the cell resistance. To overcome these weaknesses of PE and PP separators, different types of separator were prepared by co-electrospinning, applying coating layer, forming core shell around membrane, and papermaking method. The synthesized separator greatly enhanced the heat resistance and wettability of separator and mechanical properties like flexibility and tensile strength. In this review different type of polymer membrane used as separator in lithium ion battery are discussed.

  • The polymeric membrane, a component of battery devices such as Li-ion battery (LIB) and Li-polymer battery (LPB), is a typical material in which the carrier mobility dominates the battery performance. In this paper, the state-of-the-art of membranes for secondary battery is described in terms of membrane properties. Several prerequisites, which are related to stability of battery devices, are discussed to design and prepare suitable polymeric membranes. In addition, physical requirements of membranes and their measurement methods are described to develop applicable polymeric membranes in membrane preparation processes.

  • The present work was attempted to improve the performance for the removal of water from ethanol/water mixtures through the ion-exchanged zeolite membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to either $K^{+}$ or $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The membranes were ion-exchanged with 0.5 mole/L aqueous solution of either KCl or $CaCl_2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. In case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to $K^{+}$ ion, the total flux was decreased from $900\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,500\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ to $600\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,000\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factor was increased from $600{\sim}2,200$ to $850{\sim}2,500$ compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. And in case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion is substituted to $Ca^{2+}$ ion, both the total flux and selectivity of water showed the similar tendency compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. It is thought that the improved separation would be possible if the pore size of the zeolite membrane is controlled by the ion exchange.

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion polymer batteries have been considered to be next-generation power sources for portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. In this work, we tried to improve the cycling performances of lithium-ion polymer cells by coating aluminum fluoride and acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate copolymer to the polyethylene separator. It was found that the addition of aluminum fluoride to the surface-modified separator reduced the interfacial resistances and thus the cell exhibited a less capacity fading and better high rate performance. The cell showed an initial discharge capacity of 150 mAh/g and good capacity retention at 0.5 C rate.

Among them the water treatment separation membrane technology is an environmentally friendly process that does not use chemicals and shows better water quality improvement effect than conventional physicochemical and biological processes. The water treatment membrane can be applied to various fields such as waste water treatment, water purification treatment, seawater desalination, ion exchange process, ultrapure water production, organic solvent separation and water treatment technology, and it tends to expand the range of application. In the core technology of water treatment membrane, researches are being actively carried out to develop a separation membrane of better performance by controlling the pore size to adjust the separation performance. In this review, we summarized the frequency of announcement by country and organization through the technological competitiveness evaluation of patents and papers of the water separation membrane. Also, we evaluated the results from membrane research for waste water treatment, water purification treatment, seawater desalination, ion exchange process and present the future direction of research.

  • The study is aiming to prepare supported ionic liquid membranes for carbon dioxide separation efficiently. The ionic liquid, [bmim][${PF_6}^-$] (1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate) was fixed in the pores of PVDF micro-filtration membrane with a nominal pore size 0.1 ${\mu}m$. The permeabilities of $N_2$, $H_2$ and $CO_2$ gases through the prepared ionic liquid membrane were 0.075, 0.203 and 1.380 GPU, respectively. The selectivities of $CO_2/N_2$, $H_2/N_2$ were 14.2 and 2.69, respectively. Also, the supported ionic liquid membrane could be operated stably up to 2.0 bar with the immobilization of ionic liquid in the pores.

  • In this review, we summarized some of membrane processes using the ion exchange membrane typically used in energy applications. Ion exchange membranes are classified according to their functions, formations (e.g. heterogeneous, homogeneous), and polymer type. Furthermore, various methods to prepare cation exchange membranes and anion exchange membranes were discussed in detail and also illustrated through a thorough review of the literature works. There are numerous reports highlighting recent research trends in the ion exchange membrane fabrication, however, in this review we will focus more on discussing the development made in ion exchange membranes and their potential usages in future technologies.

  • This study is undertaken to investigate the major factor which causes a fouling phenomenon in membrane separation system and effect of hydrophilic treatment on fouling repression of hydrophobic polymer (polysulfone, PSf). Chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) and sulfuric acid as a sulfonating agents are used to produce sulfonated PSf (SPSf). SPSf membrane is prepared under several conditions to investigate it's separation process. The extent of fouling-repression is measured by membrane filtration index (MFI) value. With increasing the ion exchange capacity (I.E.C), the flux of SPSf membrane is decreased but the rejection is increased and the flux is less reduced. According to the MFI value, the SPSf membrane has a fouling-retardant effect.
