  • Chordomas are slowly growing and rare malignant tumors arising from the remnants of the notochord. Furthermore, intrathoracic chordomas presenting as a posterior mediastinal tumor account for only 1∼2% of all reported chordomas. Incomplete resection of these tumors can lead to local recurrence, distant metastasis and result in a poor outcome, but complete remission can be expected with complete resection and adjuvant radiotherapy. We report a case of thoracic chordoma presenting as a posterior mediastinal tumor which was successfully treated with complete resection and adjuvant radiotherapy without recurrence and distant metastasis for 2 years.

  • Malignant transformation of giant cell tumor (GCT) is known to be rare. Most of malignant transformation is reported to occur after radiation and malignant transformation without prior radiation is extremly rare. Both radiographic and pathologic findings are confusing to make a correct diagnosis. Due to the poor prognosis, early aggressive treatment is mandatory. We report this rare case together with the review of the literature.

  • In order to check host plant diversity and to confirm the potential risk to be invaded, we documented host plant flora and plant part of C. pentagona, an invasive parasitic plant in field survey and induced parasitic infection by them in the laboratory experiment. Parasitic interaction(12% of total tree species) was found in twig and leaf of tree such as Quercus mongolica and Abies holophylla that was not developed into ligninfication. There were most host plant species belong to Compositae, but the species parasitic rate of family was higher in Cyperaceae, Polygonaceae and Leguminoceae. Through the inducible infection experiment with C. pentagona, all species except one species show parasitic interaction between host plan and C. pentagona. These result means that the limiting stage for invading area is dispersion process for invading other area in Korea. Infection plant part by C. pentagona was dominantly both shoot and leaf, rather than only leaf or only shoot. We found newly 12 families and 45 host plant species including 33 herbacious one and 12 woody one. Crop plant such as Setaria italica and 6 endangerd one such as Scrophularia takesimensis, especially the later rare endemic plant was to death by parasitic infection of C. pentagona. These results indicate that C. pentagona is potential risk to both wild and cultivated plant in Korea.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the essential oil content and the aromatic constituents in the leaves of Saururus chinensis Baill, Angelica dahurica Fischer and Cnidium officinale Makino. Volatile aromatic compounds in three aromatic medicinal plants were extracted with steam distillation extraction method and identified by GC/MS. Major aromatic compounds in Saururus chinensis Baill were 1,6-octadien-3-ol, 1, 3-benzodioxole, myristicin, ${\alpha}-cadinol$ and patchouene. Major aromatic compounds in Angelica dahurica Fischer were terpinolene, 3-carene, ${\beta}-caryophyllene$, ${\beta}-cubebene$, butylated hydroxy toluene, caryophyllene oxide, piperonal, and in Cnidium officinale Makino were aristolene, benzocycloheptene, ylangene, valencene, ${\beta}-cedrene$, satene, and menthofuran. Essential oil content was highest in Saururus chinensis plant.

  • This study was performed to know and compare the community structures of macrobenthic invertebrates of eight fishing grounds in the coastal waters of Jeju Island from September to October 2008. A total of 166 species was identified. Mollusks comprised 77 species (46.4%); Arthropods 24 (14.5%), Cnidarians 18 (10.8%); Poriferans 16 (9.6%); and the others including Echinoderms 33 (17.7%). Density and biomass were estimated to be 6,905 ind./$m^2$ and 113,100.7 gwwt/$m^2$, respectively. Gastropods was the most dominant taxon in terms of abundance (3,311 ind./$m^2$) and number of species as well, and Gastropods was predominant in biomass (55,789.2 gwwt/$m^2$). The dominant species were Omphalius pfeifferi, Astralium haematragum, Turbo cornutus, Ergalatax contraacta, Lithophaga cura, Anthocidaris crassispina, Herdmania monus in 5-15 m. Based on the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into two station groups. The biodiversity, evenness and richness index appeared as follows: H' = 1.59-2.95, E' = 0.38-0.87, R = 3.3-10.4. The dominance index were highest in Daepo and lowest in Woljeong.
