  • A new measurement technique based on a two-color pyrometry and modulated LII signals to measure local soot particle temperatures has been proposed and examined experimentally. The theoretical review suggests that modulated LII signals of soot particles is suitable for a two-color pyrometry as long as the temperature increase due to laser heating remains relatively small. The modulated LII signals from ethylene and propylene diffusion flames were simultaneously measured at 550 and 750 nm by a dual measurement system that consists of optical fibers, PMT and lock-in amps. The local soot particle temperatures of diffusion flames could be obtained using a two-color pyrometry and modulated LII signal based new technique.

  • Soot particle temperatures in co-flow diffusion flames have been measured using a two-color pyrometry at the pressure of 0.2 MPa(2 atm). The measured soot particle temperatures along with the integrated soot volume fractions are analyzed to understand soot formation characteristics. At 0.2 MPa, the addition of small amount of air into ethylene do not change the soot particle temperature in soot formation regions. This result showed that the increase of soot formation with addition of air is mostly due to the chemical effect of the added air, such as the increased role of C3 chemistry during the early stage of soot inception process. The addition of sufficient air into ethylene, however, changes soot particle temperatures and the understanding of soot formation characteristics becomes complicated. Measured soot particle temperatures also showed that there is no significant temperature effect for the synergistic effect of ethylene/propane mixture on soot formation.

  • The instantaneous flame temperature and soot formation and oxidation in a D. I. diesel engine are measured by using a two-color method. The proposed method based on the continuous spectral radiation from the soot particles in flames is applicable to industrial diesel engines without major modifications of their main characteristics. Measurements are performed at one location inside the combustion chamber of a D.I. diesel engine. Effects of different engine speeds and loads on flame temperature and KL factor which is an index of soot concentrations were examined. A little temperature change were observed with increasing engine speed, while increased with loads. The higher the flame temperature is, the lower the KL factor is.

  • The present study deals with the effect of combustion chamber shape on in-cylinder soot oxidation characteristics of a D.I . diesel engine. The analysed combustion chambers were a toroidal and a reentrant with a projection(Complex). The two-color method was used to measure in-cylinder flame temperature and KL value which is approximately proportional to the soot amount along the optical path. In addition, heat release rate was calculated from the in-cylinder pressure data. From these investigations , the soot oxidation of the reentrant and the complex which were strengthen squish flows went worse in late combustion period under heavy-load operation compared to that of the toroidal at retarded fuel injection timing . It might be the cause of the flame holding that squish lip depress the outflow of flame from the bowl to the entire combustion space.

  • In this study to find out the amount of soot, LII method, which utilizes a laser, was used in laminar diffusion flame and based upon the temperature and soot measured from the turbulent Diesel diffusion flame in the constant-volume chamber using the two-color method. Through these experiments, we could know that the LII signal is generally proportional to the soot amount in a laminar diffusion flame. And we could acquire the temperature and soot using the two-color method in a turbulent Diesel diffusion flame effectively. In addition to, this experiment revealed that the KL factor was high on parts of the chamber where the temperature dropped. On the other hand, the KL factor was low where the temperature increased rapidly. Also, it was possible to measure the highest temperature of a turbulent Diesel diffusion flame is approximately 2300K.

  • In this study, In order to develop the measurement method of high energy density metal aluminum dust cloud combustion, flame temperature and emission spectrum was measured using spectrometer. Because of the ultra high ${\mu}m$-sized aluminum flame temperature more than 2400 K, it was measured by non-contact optical technique which is the modified two wavelength pyrometry with 520, 640 nm and spectrum comparison method. These methods were applied to experiment after accurate verification. As a result, we could identify that flame temperature is more than 2400 K in bottom of combustor in both methods. And on the emission spectrum analysis, we could measure AlO radical which is occurred dominantly in aluminum combustion.

  • In this work, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) technique was applied for the determination of %EE of chiral compounds. It may provide an easy way to determine the %EE with a proper accuracy within 2% error ranges as well as the absolute configuration of enantiomers. We demonstrated herein a flow cell VCD (FT-VCD) technique for time-dependent %EE measurements. The simultaneous monitoring of the mole fraction and %EE for two chiral species (epichlorohydrin and glycidol mixture) in the mixture was shown to be successful without any further separation steps. Thus, we demonstrate that FT-VCD is an appropriate analytical tool to monitor the kinetics of reactions involving chiral molecules. FT-VCD also provides a convenient nondestructive approach for the time dependent determination of the optical purity of individual components in a reaction mixture containing chiral molecules.

  • Based upon temperature calibration using the diffusion flame, the temperature and soot concentration of the turbulent flame in a visualized Diesel engine's turbulent flow of flame was qualitatively measured. Two different heads were used to judge the effect of swirl ratio within the combustion chamber. It was possible to measure the highest temperature of the non-swirl head visualized engine which is approximately 2400K, and that the swirl head engine managed up to 2100K. Also, the more the pressure of the spray increases the more the temperature increases due to the improved combustion situation with respect to the visualized diesel engine soot. This experiment also revealed that the KL factor was high where the fuel collided with the walls of the combustion chamber. Moreover the KL factor was high on parts of the chamber where the temperature dropped rapidly.

  • The temperature and soot of the visualized diesel engine's turbulent flow of the flame was measured qualitatively. In the combustion chamber, in order to judge the affect that the swirl current has on the current ratio two heads with different ratios were used. Using a high speed camera, the results were analyzed using flame visualization. In order to measure the temperature and soot of the turbulent flames like diesel flames, two color methods were used to acquire temperature and the soot of the flames according to the conditions through analyzing the two wavelengths of the flames. It was possible to measure the highest temperature of the non-swirl head visualized engine, which is approximately 2400K, and that swirl head engine managed up to 2100K. With respect to the visualized diesel engine soot, we got the grasp of the KL factor which bears the qualitative information of the soot. This study is dedicated to suggesting the possibility of measuring not only the temperature but also soot of the diffusion flame of the diesel engine turbulent flames.
