  • Man-made vibrations from traffic and construction activities are important because they may cause damage to structures. The current literature provides that damages in the urban areas were not caused by direct transmission of vibration, but rather through subsequent settlement caused by soil densification. In this paper. prediction technique of ground borne vibration induced settlement was introduced on the basis of case studies. In situ application technique of the settlement prediction model developed in laboratary was described, and the predicted settlement was compared with the measured settlement from case studies. The settlement from case studies hlatched well with the settlement calculated from the model. The parametric studies of settlement in typical urban site conditions were performed to determine the sensitive parameters and to develop reliable vibration monitoring and interpretation schemes. These demonstrated the potential usefulness of the model for the evaluation and prediction of the vibration induced in-situ settlement of sands.

  • We measured subsidences occurred in a coastal reclaimed land, Noksan industrial complex, from May 2, 1996 to February 21, 1998, using 5 interferograms of JERS-1 L-band SAR. SAR with a spatial resolution of about 16 m can detect the two-dimensional distribution of subsidence that is difficult to be estimated from in situ measurements. Accuracy of the subsidences estimated by 2-pass DInSAR was evaluated using the measurements of Magnetic Probe Extensometer (accuracy of :${\pm}$1 mm) installed at 42 stations. DInSAR measurements were well correlated with the field measurements showing an average correlation coefficient of 0.77. The correlation coefficient was further improved to be 0.87 (with RMSE of 1.44 cm) when only highly coherenced (>0.5) pixels were used. The slope of regression line was 1.04, very close to the unit value. In short, DInSAR measurements have a good linear relation with field measurements so that we can effectively detect a subsidence in the coastal reclaimed area especially using pixels of high coherence (>0.5). The maximum accumulated subsidence was about 60 cm in the study area, while the subsidence in the northern and south western areas were less than 20 cm. The resuts show that DInSAR is extremely useful for geotechnical applications as well as observation of natural deformation.

  • The governing design point of shallow foundation is not its bearing capacity but its settlemen and N-value by the SPT is one of the key parameters for settlement estimation. However, if the N-value is more than 50/30, such as 50/10 or 50/20, the N-vlaues are not blow count of 30cm depth penetration. In these cases, the estimated settlements have big difference with the measured values because the applied maximum N value for the settlement estimation is 50. Therefore, in this study, the modified method for N-value estimation is suggested. The settlements by four methods, which are based on Elastic Theory with application of modified N-value, are compared with the Origina Plate Load Test data. The same comparision was carried out with another seven Empirical Methods. The result of this study showed that the error range of settlement is decreased from 260.4~2136.5% to 20.3~272.7%. Among four methods which are based on Elastic Theory, the original method by Elastic Theory is the most accurate with the application of modified N-value. Among Empirical Methods, Terzaghi-Peck's(1948, 1967) modified method 1 is the most accurate with the application of modified N-value. The differences between the original method by Elastic Theory and Terzaghi-Peck's(1948, 1967) modified method 1 are neglectable.

  • Groundwater drawdown was pointed out as one of the causes of induced settlement on high speed railways, especially concrete track. In this study, the effect of groundwater variation on settlement was evaluated through a comparison of field measurements with numerical analysis results. A trial and error method, i.e., repeated numerical analyses by changing material properties, was used to calibrate the model. The model was applied to investigate the effect of groundwater drawdown, thickness of soft layer, and embankment height on residual settlement after concrete track completion. A soft layer thicker than 4m would result in more than 30mm of settlement; a detailed analysis of groundwater behavior thus should be conducted from the design stage to construction.

  • Three-dimensional finite element analysis of 1,300 ton stainless water reservoirs was undertaken to consider differential settlement effects of the reservoir when subjected to earthquake loads. The earthquake load for large (>1,000 ton) water reservoirs are further determined using a specification established from the Korean Standards Association. The structural behavior of water reservoirs with differential settlements can be heavily dependent on seismic loading effects. Stress and displacement distributions are induced for various load combinations, including for with and without differential settlements. From numerical examples, the induced maximum displacements of the water reservoirs largely increase with differential settlements compared to those without differential settlements.

  • In this study, model tests were performed to investigate the settlement characteristics of the rock/soil mixture subgrade with the many portion of mudstone due to the cyclic train loading in high-speed railway. Specially, from the tests varying initial degree of saturation, effects of increment of the degree of saturation in the subgrade due to rainfall or elevation of ground water table under cyclic train loading on the deformation characteristics were analyzed. From the results, in the low degree of saturation, settlement converged to some value. However, in the condition of degree of saturation larger than some value, settlement rapidly increased. Therefore, it was found that it is important to maintain the degree of saturation of subgrade below the specific level to prevent the settlement of subgrade.

  • Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted at two subsidence areas near and at limestone mine sites, respectively, in order to estimate their causes of subsidence and the regions of potential occurrence. In addition, the linkages of mine development with these subsidences were investigated by the rock engineering analysis. Two study areas have different geological setting. One study site is the land subsidence area, which contains clay and sandy soil near the limestone mine, The other study site is the land subsidence area located just above the mine, which is expected to be relevant to the limestone mine. As results of two-dimensional (2D) electrical resistivity surveys at the sites 1 and 2, low resistivity zones, which are 70 ~ 120 ohm-m and 20 ~ 50 ohm-m, respectively, were found under the subsidence zones. For the study site 1, the possibility of subsidence was confirmed by using three-dimensional (3D) inversion performed with 2D resistivity profiles. For the study site 2, the cause of the subsidence and the possibility of subsidence occurrence were confirmed by rock engineering computation with regard to measurement line 7 in which low resistivity accompanied by subsidence area was observed.

  • The behavior of the Top-Base foundation was investigated by carrying out 3D finite element method. Special attention is given to the settlement behavior of concrete Top-Base foundation due to the consolidation settlement of the embedding depth and the effect of footing dimensions which are not included in the practical design. To obtain the detailed informations, a series of numerical analyses were performed for different pile configurations. It is shown that as the number of piles in a group increases, the calculated settlement also increases. However, for the $7\times7$ group, there is no further increase in settlement. Based on this study, it is found that the total settlement of Top-Base foundation is highly influenced by the consolidation settlement and footing configurations. It is also found that the current design method overestimates the settlement, and thus, needs to be modified and supplemented.

  • In this study, a standard consolidation test (Oedometer) was performed on the relative density of sand in the south coast to evaluate long-term creep settlement characteristics. Experimental results show that the cumulative settlement at the final loading stage decreases as the relative density increases and the variation of the void ratio decreases. As a result of analyzing the settlement rate of long-term creep of sand, creep settlement of 4.7~11.0% occurred depending on relative density with respect to total settlement. The creep parameter, Beta, of Schmertmann et al. (1978) was estimated to be 0.17~0.40 (average 0.21), and it tended to converge to a certain value when the load step becomes more than a certain level. It was found that there is no significant difference in the creep parameter depending on the layer thickness, and it was confirmed that the creep parameter could be applied regardless of the field layer thickness.
