  • Abnormally high waves occurring at the east coast of korea were observed at five field measurement stations and their characteristics were analyzed with the use of wind data provided by the Korean Meteorological Administration. The high waves occurred because strong Donghae twister that was developed by extratropical cyclone blew while high swell arrived at the east coast of Korea. At Sokcho, the most northern site among the five measurement stations, maximum gust speed was 63.7 m/s and significant wave height reached at its maximum of 9.69 m with the corresponding peak wave period of 12.8 s. The reason for appearance of the abnormally high waves is that high swell continued while the twister blew strongly. Moreover, the wind direction was the same as the direction of swell propagation, which maximizes the increase of wave height due to superposition of swell and wind-generated waves. On the east coast of Korea, outbreak of this type of storm waves is very probable in winter season so that it is requested to establish a countermeasure of minimizing possible damage caused by the storm waves.

  • One of the major characteristics of the swell-like high waves, which occur in the East Sea mostly in winter with large height and long period, is its suddenness associated with the rapid development of high waves from a calm state of sea. To represent such suddenness, in this study, the term sudden high waves is introduced. To propose the criterion of sudden high waves, comparisons were made between the wave measurement data at Gangneung and Wangdolcho for eight years from 2005 and the record of marine accidents and property damage on the coast of Gangwon-do Province and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province during the same period. It was found that most of the accidents occurred when ${\Delta}(H^2L)/{\Delta}t$ was approximately greater than the top 20% or $88.6m^3/hr$, which is therefore proposed as the criterion of sudden high waves. The used variable represents the rate of increase of the wave energy in one wavelength, including not only height and period but also suddenness of high waves.

  • Recently, as the strength of winds and waves increases due to the climate change, abnormal waves such as swells have been also increased, which results in the increase of downtime events of loading/unloading in a harbour. To reduce the downtime events, breakwaters were constructed in a harbour to improve the tranquility. However, it is also important and useful for efficient port operation by predicting accurately and also quickly the downtime events when the harbour operation is in a limiting condition. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to calculate the wave conditions based on the forecasted wind data in offshore area/outside harbour and also the long-term observation was carried out to obtain the wave data in a harbour. A forecasting method was designed using an auto-regressive (AR) and artificial neural networks (ANN) models in order to establish the relationship between the wave conditions calculated by wave model (SWAN) in offshore area and observed ones in a harbour. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, this method was applied to predict wave heights in a harbour and to forecast the downtime events in Pohang New Harbour with highly complex topography were compared. From the verification study, it was observed that the ANN model was more accurate than the AR model.

  • This experiment was carried out to find the effect of seeding rates and herbicides on the weed control, yield and crude protein of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). The variety used in the present study was Pioneer 988. Two different seeding rates were 25 kg/ha and 50 kg/ha and five weed control treatments were weedy check, hand weeded check, alachlor, alachlor+simazine, and simazine of preemergence application. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. Forage yield was not influenced by seeding rates. There was no significant difference between forage yield from 25 kg/ha and from 50 kg/ha of seeding rates. But weedy plots showed higher yield from the high seeding rate. Alachlor+simazine treatment showed the greatest yield among the weed control treatments. But there was no difference among the hand weeded treatment, simazine treatment, and alachlor+simazine treatment. 2. Seeding rates did not affect weed yield, but weedy plots showed the tendancy toward higher weed yield from the low seeding rate. Alachlor+simazing preemergence application showed the most effective weed control. But there was no significant difference in weed yield among the treatments of the hand weeded, alachlor+simazine and simazine. The weed yield in alachlor treatment was significantly higher than other three treatments. 3. The height of plant was shortest on the weedy plots and the longest height was obtained from the alachlor+simazine application. But in the first harvest the height was reduced by herbicides. Seeding rates did not affect the plant height. But the height was slightly taller under the low seeding rate than under the high seeding rate. 4. The percent crude protein of the forage did not affected by two seeding rates. Simazine treatments increased the percent crude protein and total crude protein yield. Simazine and alachlor+simazine application showed the significantly higher percent crude protein than hand weeded and alachlor treatments. Simazine increased the percent crude protein without reduction of forage yield. 5. Whereas the number of original stand was greater in the high seeding rate, the number of tillers per stand was higher in the low seeding rate. Weed reduced the number of stands and tillers. There was no significant indifference among the weed control treatments. It is concluded from above results that when sorghum-sudangrass hybrids are broadcasted for forage, 25 kg/ha rate of seeding is appropriate and alachlor+simazine treatment is most effective on weed control, maximum forage yield, and high percent crude protein.

  • This study has been carried out to obtain information related to food habits and snacking behaviors including health related behaviors. The subjects were 300 middle school students (144 boys and 156 girls). The results were as follows: Average height and weight of boys were 162.3 cm and 54.1 kg respectively. Those of girls were 159.8 cm and 49.0 kg respectively. 59.0% of the subjects of the subjects had 10,000-30,000 won as monthly allowances and their subjective health condition was good (55.7%). In the regularity of meal, 47.0% of the subjects had twice a day, the main reason for skipping meal was insufficient time to eat due to oversleep (54.3%). Most of the subjects (75.0%) had a prejudice in food selection because of a bad taste. 62.0% of the subjects ate snack between meals more than three times a week, because they were hungry, good taste and habitual. The criteria of choosing snack were taste, nutrition and quality of food. Food as snacks they frequently had fruits, milk and milk products, cookies, chocolate in order. Boys had more french fries than girls, girls had more fruits, cookies and chocolate than boys. Average food habit score of boys (49.27 ${\pm}$ 7.53) was higher than that of girls (48.54 ${\pm}$ 7.81). The group who had a higher food habit score, they had more fruits and less soft drink as snacks, lower BMI, and also less monthly allowance than the group who had a lower food habit score. This study may provide basic information on eating habits of middle school students, suggests that nutrition education or counseling can improve food habits and develop positive behaviors toward healthy diets.
