An Integrated VR Platform for 3D and Image based Models: A Step toward Interactivity with Photo Realism (상호작용 및 사실감을 위한 3D/IBR 기반의 통합 VR환경)

  • Traditionally, three dimension model s have been used for building virtual worlds, and a data structure called the "scene graph" is often employed to organize these 3D objects in the virtual space. On the other hand, image-based rendering has recently been suggested as a probable alternative VR platform for its photo-realism, however, due to limited interactivity. it has only been used for simple navigation systems. To combine the merits of these two approaches to object/scene representations, this paper proposes for a scene graph structure in which both 3D models and various image-based scenes/objects can be defined. traversed, and rendered together. In fact, as suggested by Shade et al. [1]. these different representations can be used as different LOD's for a given object. For in stance, an object might be rendered using a 3D model at close range, a billboard at an intermediate range. and as part of an environment map at far range. The ultimate objective of this mixed platform is to breath more interactivity into the image based rendered VE's by employing 3D models as well. There are several technical challenges in devising such a platform : designing scene graph nodes for various types of image based techniques, establishing criteria for LOD/representation selection. handling their transition s. implementing appropriate interaction schemes. and correctly rendering the overall scene. Currently, we have extended the scene graph structure of the Sense8's WorldToolKit. to accommodate new node types for environment maps. billboards, moving textures and sprites, "Tour-into-the-Picture" structure, and view interpolated objects. As for choosing the right LOD level, the usual viewing distance and image space criteria are used, however, the switching between the image and 3D model occurs at a distance from the user where the user starts to perceive the object's internal depth. Also. during interaction, regardless of the viewing distance. a 3D representation would be used, if it exists. Finally. we carried out experiments to verify the theoretical derivation of the switching rule and obtained positive results.

  • In school science class, actual geological field trips tend to be restricted due to a number of problems including travel distance, cost, safety, and so on. Therefore, alternative way should be sought to provide students with the benefits of actual field trip. The purpose of this study is to develop web-based virtual field trip (VFT) about Jeju island in Korea by using flash panorama, and to explore a variety of ways to utilize the VFT. The characteristics of Jeju VFT are as follows: it provides virtual space for secondary school students to learn about volcanic topography and geology; students can access contents in a non-sequential order by virtue of web-based system, and students can control learning pace according to their ability; it is possible to investigate the same field site repeatedly, not limited by time and space; it presents differentiated worksheets for different school grade; it provides diverse complementary web contents, e. g., closeup features, thin sections, inquiry questions, and explanations of outcrops. We proposed several ways with instructional models to utilize Jeju VFT in science class and extra-school curricular as well.

  • 현대 사회의 발전으로 인해 사람들의 삶의 질이 향상됨에 따라 사람들은 다양한 방식으로 자신 및 자신의 개성을 표출하려는 시도를 한다. 특히 IT 기술의 발전은 가상현실 및 3D 기술의 성장을 이끌어냈다. 본 논문은 다가올 4차 산업혁명에 발맞추어 사용자의 개성을 표출할 실용적이고 개성 있는 3D 모델링 아이디어를 제안하고자 한다. 스마트폰 사진 촬영과 동시에 사용자가 선택한 다른 캐릭터 사진과의 합성 사진을 Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)과 Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) 기반 딥러닝 기술을 통해 생성한다. 생성된 이미지는 사용자의 모습과 합성의 대상이 되는 캐릭터의 모습을 동시에 담고 있다. 본 연구의 결과물로 생성된 합성 사진을 3D 프린터를 이용하여 자신만의 모습이 담긴 굿즈를 생산 혹은 이모티콘을 생성하는 등 다양한 실용적인 응용분야에 적용 가능하다.

  • 아바타를 이용한 얼굴 애니메이션은 가상 현실이나 엔터테인먼트와 같은 분야에서 많이 적용된다. 얼굴 애니메이션을 생성하는 방법에는 크게 3 차원 모델을 직접 변형시키는 기하학적인 변형 방법과 2 차원 이미지의 워핑이나 모핑방법을 이용한 이미지 변형 방법이 있다. 기하학적인 변형 방법 중 3 차원 모델을 변형시키기 위한 방법으로 RBF(Radial Basis Function)을 이용하는 방법이 있다. RBF 함수를 이용하여 모델의 부드러운 변형을 만들 수 있다. 이 방법은 모델의 임의의 한 점을 이동하게 되면 영향을 받는 정점들을 좀 더 자연스럽게 이동시킴으로써 자연스러운 애니메이션을 생성할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 RBF 를 이용하여 3 차원 얼굴 메쉬 모델의 기하학적 변형을 통해 모델의 얼굴 표정을 생성하는 방법에 대해 제안하고자 한다. 얼굴 모델 변형을 위해 얼굴의 특징인 눈, 입, 턱 부분에 특징점을 정하고 각 특징점에 따라 영향을 받는 영역을 정하기 위해 얼굴 모델을 지역적으로 클러스터링한다. 각 특징점에 따라 영향을 받는 영역에 대해 클러스터링을 적용하고 RBF 를 이용하여 자연스러운 얼굴 표정을 생성하는 방법을 제안한다.

  • Estimating the correct pose of augmented objects on the real camera view efficiently is one of the most important questions in image tracking area. In computer vision, Homography is used for camera pose estimation in augmented reality system with markerless. To estimating Homography, several algorithm like SURF features which extracted from images are used. Based on extracted features, Homography is estimated. For this purpose, RANSAC algorithm is well used to estimate homography and DCS-RANSAC algorithm is researched which apply constraints dynamically based on Constraint Satisfaction Problem to improve performance. In DCS-RANSAC, however, the dataset is based on pattern of feature distribution of images manually, so this algorithm cannot classify the input image, pattern of feature distribution is not recognized in DCS-RANSAC algorithm, which lead to reduce it's performance. To improve this problem, we suggest the KCS-RANSAC algorithm using K-means clustering in CS-RANSAC to cluster the images automatically based on pattern of feature distribution and apply constraints to each image groups. The suggested algorithm cluster the images automatically and apply the constraints to each clustered image groups. The experiment result shows that our KCS-RANSAC algorithm outperformed the DCS-RANSAC algorithm in terms of speed, accuracy, and inlier rate.

Post-Rendering 3D Warping using Projective Texture (투영 텍스춰를 이용한 렌더링 후 3차원 와핑)

  • Due to the recent development of graphics hardware, real-time rendering of complex scenes is still a challenging task. As results of researches on image based rendering, the rendering schemes based on post-rendering 3D warping have been proposed. In general, these methods produce good rendering results. However, they are not appropriate for real-time rendering since it is not easy to accelerate the time-consuming algorithms within graphics subsystem. As an attempt to resolve this problem of the post-rendering 3D warping technique, we present a new real-time scheme based on projective texture. In our method, two reference images obtained by rendering complicated objects at two consecutive points of time are used. Rendering images of high quality for intermediate points of time are obtained by projecting the reference images onto a simplified object, and then blending the resulting images. Our technique will be effectively used in developing real-time graphics applications such as 3D games and virtual reality software and so on.

  • During the global pandemic period, The world has created a new paradigm using digital technology, aligning one direction with the highest value of life and survival. Untact has changed from a convenience value to an essential value with quarantine and sanitation. And the industry process has shifted from face-to-face to non-face-to-face. The platform formed an community in a virtual space, and companies started a new service based on presence. For a sense of reality, information is expressed and stored from 2D centered on images to 3D multifaceted. Companies are marketing using 3D modeling, focusing on augmented reality, virtual world, and mirror world of Metaverses. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current status and examples of 3D modeling in the E-commerce environment of domestic and foreign jewelry brands in this era of change, and present ways to use 3D modeling in jewelry industries.

  • Space design in the 21st century has been developed in connection with media more various than ever. In the age of image represented by popular culture, space design connected with media is based on post-reason thoughts constituting the post-modern society, and reflects polysemously and pluralistically changes in the society through the identification of art with life. The movie, which is an image perceived particularly sensibly and the most impractical simulated image among various illusionary media images composing the contemporary society, is growing rapidly in interrelation with various fields of art based on its peculiar nature, and its influence is getting more extensive. The movie manipulates mass society to create what does not exist and restore lost images into new realities through the reproduction of extremely realistic senses, and uses them in establishing virtual realities and creating illusionary images representing the age of simularc. The illusionary expression of the movie produces new meanings through disintegrating existing meanings and recombining them, and expresses popular culture from a position closest to our everyday life. Such an analytical attitude toward the illusionary movie reflecting our society can be a new approach to space design. The present study attempts to suggest the possibility of applying such an illusionary characteristic of the movie as a methodology of space design by utilizing the characteristic as a conceptual language of space design.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the visual characteristics of image expression elements of contents based on hologram and to find ways to utilize hologram effectively. Therefore, I intend to analyze the characteristics and cases of hologram, and investigate efficient representation methods of hologram contents. As a research method, I considered the theoretical background of the hologram through the literature investigation and the precedent study related to the hologram technology, and derived the results from the case study analysis. The characteristics of expression of hologram contents are fusion of virtual and physical elements, interaction, visual extension of reality space. It becomes possible to produce scenes that were difficult to visualize, thereby enhancing the interest and immersion of the audience.

Design of a DMA Controller for Augmented Reality in Embedded System (증강현실을 위한 임베디드 시스템의 DMA 컨트롤러 설계)

  • An Augmented Reality(AR) provides virtual information with a real environment, and the processor needs to access the memory for the AR system. However, the processor has the heavy workload as the technology improvement leads to increase the size of data. We need a specific module to reduce the workload to overcome the limitation. In this paper, we propose a Direct Memory Access(DMA) controller displaying image instead of the processor. We implemented the proposed DMA controller on a Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) and demonstrated the functionality of the DMA controller based on an Avalon Memory Mapped(Avalon-MM) interface. Also, the DMA controller is fabricated by using Magnachip/Hynix 0.35um CMOS technology and verified the feasibility of the embedded system.
