Design of Character Emoticon based on Sex for Efficient Emotion Communication (효율적인 감정 전달을 위한 성별 기반 캐릭터형 이모티콘 디자인)

  • In this study, a design of emoticons based on sex was studied through Kansai engineering method. First, we developed emoticon prototypes according to a design guideline derived from existing related literatures. Then, the design guidelines was updated from the survey results on the properties of emoticon, and the two sets of modified emoticons were developed from them. Another survey was executed to evaluate the degree of emotional expressions on the three types of emoticons developed in this way. A small number of emoticons were found to be designed fulling the researcher's intention. However, in many other emoticons, it was difficult to find a consistent characteristics. Even though it was observed through detailed analysis that one of the main causes of this result was lack of detail in the design guidelines, the results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the development and application of character - type emoticons suitable for male and female users' emotional expressions in future researches.

  • They use emoticons as assistance to express their emotion on CMC communications. Emoticons have been developed into diverse forms like text emoticon, image emoticon, animation emoticon. However emoticons represent the emotion only in simple way, not in specific because the shortage of grouping expressions of the emotion. So, the emoticons used nowadays should be grouped specifically in order to help produce the modulated animation emoticons those are able to represent the feeling in specific and diverse way and be used conveniently. Therefore, this thesis is going to propose the design method of a new kind of animation emoticons those can make what animation emoticons used nowadays are not able to through the grouping and analyzing expression images according to faces, gesture(hand), and backgrounds(decoration) focused on the animation emoticons in messenger programs.

The Role of Motives, Flow, and Social Influence in Attitude and Purchase Intention to Emoticons (이모티콘 사용동기, 플로우, 사회적 영향력이 이모티콘 사용태도 및 구매의도에 미치는 영향)

  • In recent year, graphic emoticons in MIM(Mobile Instant Messenger) play an important role not as a valuable communication methods, but as main business model for MIM service providers. Although the graphic emoticons in MIM are regarded as a commercial product, there has been little systematic research reflecting consumers' perspectives. In order to fill this theoretical and practice gap, the study is designed to explore the structural relationships among emoticon use motives, attitude, and purchasing intention to emoticons in context of MIM. The results showed that emoticon use motives in MIM were composed of two main factors, perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. And we also verified that both perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment positively impact flow in communication with using emoticons and social influence. Lastly, flow and social influence were positively related to attitude toward using emoticons and attitude also was related to purchase intention to emoticons in MIM, positively. However, flow and social influence did not have a positive influence on purchase intention to emoticons directly. The implications and limitations of this study are also discussed.

  • The evolution of instant communication has mirrored the development of the Internet and messenger applications are among the most representative manifestations of instant communication technologies. In messenger applications, senders use emoticons to supplement the emotions conveyed in the text of their messages. The fact that communication via messenger applications is not face-to-face makes it difficult for senders to communicate their emotions to message recipients. Emoticons have long been used as symbols that indicate the moods of speakers. However, at present, emoticon-use is evolving into a means of conveying the psychological states of consumers who want to express individual characteristics and personality quirks while communicating their emotions to others. The fact that companies like KakaoTalk, Line, Apple, etc. have begun conducting emoticon business and sales of related content are expected to gradually increase testifies to the significance of this phenomenon. Nevertheless, despite the development of emoticons themselves and the growth of the emoticon market, no suitable emoticon recommendation system has yet been developed. Even KakaoTalk, a messenger application that commands more than 90% of domestic market share in South Korea, just grouped in to popularity, most recent, or brief category. This means consumers face the inconvenience of constantly scrolling around to locate the emoticons they want. The creation of an emoticon recommendation system would improve consumer convenience and satisfaction and increase the sales revenue of companies the sell emoticons. To recommend appropriate emoticons, it is necessary to quantify the emotions that the consumer sees and emotions. Such quantification will enable us to analyze the characteristics and emotions felt by consumers who used similar emoticons, which, in turn, will facilitate our emoticon recommendations for consumers. One way to quantify emoticons use is metadata-ization. Metadata-ization is a means of structuring or organizing unstructured and semi-structured data to extract meaning. By structuring unstructured emoticon data through metadata-ization, we can easily classify emoticons based on the emotions consumers want to express. To determine emoticons' precise emotions, we had to consider sub-detail expressions-not only the seven common emotional adjectives but also the metaphorical expressions that appear only in South Korean proved by previous studies related to emotion focusing on the emoticon's characteristics. We therefore collected the sub-detail expressions of emotion based on the "Shape", "Color" and "Adumbration". Moreover, to design a highly accurate recommendation system, we considered both emotion-technical indexes and emoticon-emotional indexes. We then identified 14 features of emoticon-technical indexes and selected 36 emotional adjectives. The 36 emotional adjectives consisted of contrasting adjectives, which we reduced to 18, and we measured the 18 emotional adjectives using 40 emoticon sets randomly selected from the top-ranked emoticons in the KakaoTalk shop. We surveyed 277 consumers in their mid-twenties who had experience purchasing emoticons; we recruited them online and asked them to evaluate five different emoticon sets. After data acquisition, we conducted a factor analysis of emoticon-emotional factors. We extracted four factors that we named "Comic", Softness", "Modernity" and "Transparency". We analyzed both the relationship between indexes and consumer attitude and the relationship between emoticon-technical indexes and emoticon-emotional factors. Through this process, we confirmed that the emoticon-technical indexes did not directly affect consumer attitudes but had a mediating effect on consumer attitudes through emoticon-emotional factors. The results of the analysis revealed the mechanism consumers use to evaluate emoticons; the results also showed that consumers' emoticon-technical indexes affected emoticon-emotional factors and that the emoticon-emotional factors affected consumer satisfaction. We therefore designed the emoticon recommendation system using only four emoticon-emotional factors; we created a recommendation method to calculate the Euclidean distance from each factors' emotion. In an attempt to increase the accuracy of the emoticon recommendation system, we compared the emotional patterns of selected emoticons with the recommended emoticons. The emotional patterns corresponded in principle. We verified the emoticon recommendation system by testing prediction accuracy; the predictions were 81.02% accurate in the first result, 76.64% accurate in the second, and 81.63% accurate in the third. This study developed a methodology that can be used in various fields academically and practically. We expect that the novel emoticon recommendation system we designed will increase emoticon sales for companies who conduct business in this domain and make consumer experiences more convenient. In addition, this study served as an important first step in the development of an intelligent emoticon recommendation system. The emotional factors proposed in this study could be collected in an emotional library that could serve as an emotion index for evaluation when new emoticons are released. Moreover, by combining the accumulated emotional library with company sales data, sales information, and consumer data, companies could develop hybrid recommendation systems that would bolster convenience for consumers and serve as intellectual assets that companies could strategically deploy.

The Effect of Motivation for Emoticon Use on Behavior of Purchasing Paid Emoticon: Focused on Theory of Planned Behavior (이모티콘 사용동기가 유료 이모티콘 구매 행동에 미치는 영향: 계획행동이론을 중심으로)

  • Emoticons used in personal messengers have already become a one of industry. In this study, we want to explore what motivations people use emoticons and how they affect to purchasing behavior. We first looked into which emoticon usage motivation influenced the attitude of emoticon purchase, and then analyzed the research model through PLS-based structural equation modeling. The result found that fashion and fun/habit factors significantly explain attitudes to emoticon purchase, and attitude, subjective norms, and perceived self-control affect to purchase intention and purchase intention predict purchase behavior. This study showed the factors affecting the purchase of emoticons through a validated model, and the results suggest what motivation factors should be included in the marketing phase and advertising.

  • Today, as a means of online communication, the use of emoticons is activated in SNS. Emoticon is an important element to share impact effects and fun together with various content design attempts. In this paper, we analyze the expression patterns changed through development process of emoticons, and analyze characteristics and effects of emoticons which are combined with traditional culture among the types of emoticons currently used.

Motivations for the Using Emoticon : Exploring the effect of Motivations and Intimacies between Users on the Attitude and Behaviors of Using Emoticon (이모티콘 사용자의 이용 동기에 대하여 이용 동기와 친밀도에 따른 이모티콘 이용 태도와 행태 차이)

  • The forms of emoticon - a symbolic tool which expresses a person's sentiments and emotions in virtual space - have been diversifying by the growth of the mobile market. In light of this phenomenon, a number of studies about emoticon have been conducting in Korea. Nevertheless, those are limited not only to a certain form of emoticon which is combinations of symbolic characters but to the functional aspect of emoticon. Thus, this research focused on the image-form emoticon which is the most highly used, and on the user's perspective rather than functional. It is (1)found out the motive of using image-form of emoticon, and (2)explored the attitude and using behaviors toward emoticon based on the motives found. Moreover, this study (3)examined if there is a gender effect and intimacy effect. As a result, the motives of the emoticon-users were to express their emotions, to show their intimacies to the receivers, to manage their images, and to supplement text-based messaging. Two of the motives - expressing emotions and expressing intimacy - had a positive effect on the attitude and the frequency of emoticon-use. It is also found that the higher intimacy users feel toward the receivers, the better the attitude they have as well as the more frequent they use emoticon. This study suggests practical implications of emoticon as a growing communication tool by identifying the motives of using it. And it also contributes to examine the effect of the motives and intimacy on the attitude and the actual behavior of using emoticon.

A Study on the Use of Communication Functions in Mobile Messenger Emoticons -Focus on Line Messenger- (모바일 메신저 이모티콘을 통한 커뮤니케이션에 관한 연구 -라인을 중심으로-)

  • Smartphone has become a part of many people's daily lives. The mobile messenger function on the smartphone in particular is the most frequently used services. The mobile communication tool in the age of digital media can be classified into two big categories: text messages and emoticons, the non-verbal expression tool of one's emotions. This thesis has studied the mobile communications made by the non-verbal tool of emoticons. The history of emoticons traces back to the text-based emoticon created by Scott Fahlman, from which graphical emoticons were developed and the sound and animation effects have been added. Many people use emoticons and diverse companies are developing the tool. In this study, the representative emoticon development case of Line Co., Ltd. is analyzed to see the concept, types, development process, collaborations and merchandising of the emoticons. Based on the case of Line, the development orientation and direction of domestic emoticons will be discussed to be culture contents.

The Emotional Effect of Emoticon on Interpreting Text Message (메시지 해석에 이모티콘이 미치는 정서적 효과 - 휴대전화 문자 메시지 상황을 중심으로)

  • Cell phone users frequently send and receive text messages with emoticons in their everyday lives, but emoticon and its emotional effect on message in mobile context has not been focused on. The purpose of this study is to investigate the emotional effect of emoticons on interpretation of text message considering valent texts and emoticons. Study 1 showed the effect of valent emoticons on neutral message, and also revealed that existence of emoticon, regardless of its valence, decreases rigidness and increases familiarity of message. In Study 2 that used positive and negative text messages, we found that emoticon still affects assessing sender's mood state and emotion. Result of interaction between valences of text and emoticon showed that participants in condition of incongruent pairs felt more sarcasm.
