  • Dispersion of high temperature and high salinity water discharged from a desalination plant is numerically estimated to investigate its impact on marine environment. The plant is installed on a floating barge located in Jinhae Bay and takes 200 tons of seawater per day. Fifty tons of intake are changed into fresh water, while 150 tons of those are discharged as the water of 15℃ warmer and 1.33 times saltier than surrounding seawater. In this dispersion model, advection is described by two-dimensional tidal currents and turbulent diffusion is simulated by Monte Carlo technique. Decay of water temperature is modelled by heat exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean, while decay of water salinity is ignored. The distributions of temperature and salinity come to equilibrium when the dispersion model is run for 100 days for temperature and for 365 days for salinity, respectively. At equilibrium state the water temperature and salinity rise 0.01℃ and 0.001‰ higher than ambient seawater, respectively.

  • Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) technology has been focused in contaminated groundwater remediation. It is necessary to select adequate reactive material according to characteristics of contaminant in groundwater. In this research, the reaction between reactive material and heavy metal contaminants was estimated through column test. Reactive material was slag, which has been produced in Gwangyang power plant, and heavy metal contaminants were cadmium, lead and copper. Column test was performed in the condition of 1) single and multi contaminated solution and 2) different initial concentration of cadmium. Retardation factor of cadmium is 3.94 in multi contamination. But that of copper is 40.3 in single and 25 in multi. The difference of retardation between cadmium and copper is due to affinity, resulted from the difference of electronegativity. In multi-contamination, copper effluent concentration was above initial copper concentration and at the same time lead effluent concentration was decreased. This phenomenon was considered that lead extract copper sorbed in slag and then lead was sorbed to the vacant sorption site instead. And as the initial concentration was increased, the retardation factor of cadmium became decreased.

  • The application of multiphase flows is increasingly being applied to analyze phenomena such as single phase flows where the fluid boundary changes continuously over time or the problem of mixing a liquid phase and a gas phase. In particular, multiphase flow models that take into account incompressible Newtonian fluids for liquid and gas are often applied to solve the problems of the free water surface such as wave fields. In general, multi-phase flow models require time-based the surface tracking of each fluid's phase boundary, which determines the accuracy of the final calculation of the model. This study evaluates the advection performance of representative VOF-type boundary tracking techniques applied to various CFD numerical codes. The effectiveness of the FCT method to control the numerical flux to minimize the numerical diffusion in the conventional VOF-type boundary tracking method and advection calculation was mainly evaluated. In addition, the possibility of tracking performance of free surface using CIP method (Yabe and Aoki, 1991) was also investigated. Numerical results show that the FCT-VOF method introducing an anti-diffusive flux to precent excessive diffusion is superior to other methods under the confined conditions in this study. The results from this study are expected to be used as an important basic data in selecting free surface tracking techniques applied to various numerical codes.

  • In this study, an analytical model has been developed to predict the build-up of heat field due to a point heat source in the presence of sharp cross-flow depth change. The model has been applied to investigate the effect of the depth change and flow pattern on the heat field. Model results show that, when there is a sharp depth change in cross-flow direction, the heat transport across the boundary of the depth change is enhanced or diminished according to the increasing or decreasing of the horizontal diffusion flux. Including residual components as well as tidal currents give rise to reduce the effect of the horizontal diffusion on the heat transport because of increasing the advection of heat.

  • To improve water quality particularly for sea bathers along the Fylde coastal zone near Blackpool, North West England, waste water from a sewage outfall is studied using a mathematical model. The explicit second order accurate central scheme and the third order accurate QUICKEST scheme are used to represent the diffusion terms and the advection terms of the advective-diffusion equation, respectively. Hydrodynamic model is run for a coarse and fine grid, of 1km and 200m, respectively, obtaining good agreement with measured data. Water quality model is then used to predict faecal coliform levels in the region for four different scenarios, including discharges from: - (i) Fleetwood outfall, (ii)River Ribble for summer condition, (iii)River Ribble for winter condition, and (iv)combined sewer overflows for the Blackpool and Fleetwood communities. Main findings from the simulations are:- (i) Fleetwood outfall has a negligible impact on the beaches with respect to pathogen levels; (ii) Discharge from River Ribble for both summer and winter conditions is predicted in the range of coliform levels 10 -500 counts/100ml along the beach at Lytham St. Annes; and (iii) The CSO effluent discharges are predicted not to advect out into offshore by stronger tidal currents.

  • Characteristics of suspended sediment concentration of equilibrium and non-equilibrium state caused by waves and currents are investigated by conducting a movable bed experiments in wave tanks. In the region where a downward flux of suspended sediment is larger than a upward flux, time-averaged vertical distribution of suspended sediment does not indicate logarithmic distribution. A new numerical procedure for predicting time-averaged suspended sediment concentration is also proposed based on two-dimensional advective diffusion equation by applying a split-operator approach. It is found that the unposed procedure can predict measured distribution of suspended sediment satisfactorily.

  • Gaussian plume model is used to assess environmental dose for abnormal radioactive release in nuclear facility, but there has a problem to use it for complex terrain. In this report, MATTEW and WIND04 Codes which had been verified were used to calculate wind field in the complex terrain. Under the base of these codes principle, wind fields were obtained from the calculation of the finite difference approximation for advection-diffusion equations which satisfy the mass-conservative law. Particle concentrations and external doses were calculated by using PIC model which approximate the particle to radioactive cloud, and atmospheric diffusion of the particles from the random walk method. The results show that the adjusted wind fields and the distributions of the exposure dose vary with the topography of the complex terrain.

  • Coastal areas, especially embayments are apt to be polluted easily and many embayments in Korea are already suffering from pollution problems. To manage such pollution, it is strongly needed to develop technique to trace movements of pollution. Such technique cove- ring the embayment affected by the tidal influence, should take account both of the convection and the diffusion motions which cause lots of problems in numerical calculation. In this study, a Eulerian-Lagrangian Analysis(ELA) model was applied to Young Il bay and tested for its applicablity, which was developed by using the Eulerian-Lagrangian Method that reduce the numerical disperison and oscillation by way of solving convection and diffusion terrns separately. Concentration of Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) and Suspend Solid(SS) of the embay- ment area were estimated by the model and compared with the observed values and the sound results were obtained. At the same time the diffsion coefficient and decay coefficient for Chemical Oxygen Demand in the Young II Bay were found as Dx = Dy = 20m$^2$/sec, kd=2.5 ${\times}$ 10-5/sec respectively, and for Suspend Solid, Dx =Dy = 30m$^2$/sec, kd=5.0${\times}$ 10-5/sec

  • The two-stage numerical model was used to study the relation between three-dimensional local wind seal area for Korean peninsula. The first stave is three dimensional time-dependent local wind model which elves the wind field and vertical diffusion coefncient. The second stage is advection/duusion model which uses the results of the first stage as input data. First, wand fields on Korean peninsula for none synoptic scale wand showed typical land and sea breeze circulation, and the emitted particles were transported by sea breeze for daytime, emissions return to sea by land breeze for nighttime.

  • A three-dimensional numerical model which involved the nesting method was developed to reproduce the wind circulation of Kwangyang Bay area which comprises complicated mountains and sea topograph. The calculated results indicated geographical effects of Kwangyang Bay area, sea/land breezes and mount-valley wind which are local circular winds. We also noticed that the northern inland area of Kwangyang Bay formed the very complex wind systems under the influence of such geographic effects when a land breeze was not formed. A good agreement was found between predicted and observed values of temperature. In addition, the calculated results of the wind direction and the wind velocity are in accord with the observed values. They showed only a slight difference in between predicted and the observed values, when the sea breeze and the land breeze are changing.
