Development of Moving Force Identification Algorithm Using Moment Influence Lines at Multiple-Axes and Density Estimation Function (다축모멘트 영향선과 밀도추정함수를 사용한 이동하중식별 알고리듬의 개발)

  • Estimating moving vehicle loads is important in modeling design loads for bridge design and construction. The paper proposes a moving force identification algorithm using moment influence lines measured at multi-axes. Density estimation function was applied to estimate more than two wheel loads when estimated load values fluctuated severely. The algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on a simple-span plate-girder bridge. Influences of measurement noise and error in velocity on the identification results were investigated in the simulation study. Also, laboratory experiments were carried out to examine the algorithm. The load identification capability was dependent on the type and speed of moving loads, but the developed algorithm could identify loads within 10% error in maximum.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the frequency characteristics of group walking loads based on the information of measured responses. At first, dynamic properties such as natural frequencies and modes are obtained from input/output relation for building structures by heel drop test. Second, a method to estimate group walking loads by the transfer functions from measured responses to group walking loads is proposed. The method turned out to estimate the group walking loads accurately. Higher modes could be important in estimating the amplitude of group walking loads with the information of single walking load.

  • An algorithm is proposed for estimating axle loads of trucks moving over a bridge by measuring dynamic responses. The bridge was modeled by a beam structure in the current applications of the proposed algorithm. Among the state vectors, measured acceleration was used and displacement was computed from measured strain at the same location. Nodal force vectors were computed by using a ready-made database of equivalent nodal force transformation matrix. The algorithm was examined through simulation studies and laboratory experiments. The effects of measurement noise and velocity error were investigated through simulation studies.

  • The paper presents the results of a study on improvement in flexure capacities of continuous prestressed steel I-girder with section increasement at internal supports. After tensioning, the field experiment on prestressed steel I-girder has been performed in the various aspects of prestressed I-girder introducing section increasement at internal supports, tendon profile.

  • Considering uncertainties of random input data, it is more reasonable to use probabilistic method than the conventional deterministic method for the design of structures or for the assessment of the responses of structures, which are designed as safe even under extreme loads. Therefore, to assess the quantitative effects of the constructed cable stayed bridge by the input random variables, a sensitivity analysis is studied. Using perturbation method, an analysis program is developed for the iterative probabilistic finite element analyses and sensitivity analyses of the cable stayed bridge, except the initial shape analysis. Monte-Carlo Simulations were used for the verification of the developed program. The results of sensitivity analysis shows the governing effects of external loads.   • Highway bridges are important infrastructures for national transportation systems. However, due to overweight trucks frequently moving on highways, highway structures have been gradually damaged and economical loss has grown severe. To maintain a highway bridge safe and sound, properties and loading characteristics of passing trucks on the bridge must be evaluated WIM(Weigh-In-Motion) systems have been developed by many research groups for multiple purposes. Most of the developed WIM systems have applied moment influence lines to identify loading characteristics. Since passing trucks are dynamic loads, however, the identified loads by the influence lines for static loads cannot represent the actual situation correctly. The current research investigates the effects of problem of different loading characteristics on load identification and proposes a new algorithm using the concept of moment influence surface. A numerical simulation study is carried out.

  • This study intends to analytically evaluate the vibration serviceability of the bridges for each long-span type having the same span length and road width using the Meister vibration sensation curve. With MIDAS, a structural analysis program, bridges were modeled using the girders as the frame element and slabs as the plate element. The transient analysis was performed using the moving loads of the design vehicles. This study presents the analytical process of reviewing the vibration serviceability during the design of long-span bridges. It involves the comparison of the vibration serviceability of different bridge types by applying the lagging-behind and acceleration amplitude from transient analysis to Meister curve. The result confirms that the process is appropriate.

  • Photoelasticity is a useful technique for obtaining the differences and directions of principal stresses in a model. In conventional photoelasticity, the photoelastic parameters are measured manually point by point. Identifying and measuring photoelastic data is time-consuming and requires skill. The fringe phase shifting method was recently developed and has been found to be convenient for measuring and analyzing fringe data in photo-mechanics. This paper presents an experimental study on the stress distribution along a horizontal line that passes the central point of a rhombus plate made of Photoflex (i.e., type of urethane rubber). The isoclinic fringe and/or principal stress direction is constant on this horizontal line, so a four-bucket phase shifting method can be applied. The method requires four photoelastic fringes that are obtained from a circular polariscope by rotating the analyzer at $0^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$ and $135^{\circ}C$. Experimental measurements using the method were quantitatively compared with the results from FEM analysis; the results from the two methods showed comparable agreement.
