A Study on Innovation and Competitive Strategy in Network-Based Economy: Case Analysis on Network Effects, Incremental Innovation in Korean Mobile Telecommunication Industry (네트워크 경제 하에서 혁신과 경쟁 전략에 대한 기반 연구: 한국 이동통신 산업 사례를 중심으로)

  • The existence of network is indeed the single most important factor that brings about new business phenomena in the new digital economy, especially in the IT industry. Network effect refers to a phenomenon that the increase in size of the network leads to increased network value and user utility. It determines the competitive structure of an industry and the performances of industry competitors (Shapiro and Varian, 1999). The phenomenon of increasing returns and winner-take-all enjoyed by the early winner in the competition can be attributed to the existence of positive feedback which increases the value of network and induces more users into join the network (Arthur, 1996; Shapiro and Varian, 1999; Song and Lee, 2003). This research attempts to shed light on the topic of innovation and competitive strategy of network-based industries. We analyze the case of the Korean mobile communications industry, in which a shift in technological paradigm from 2G to 3G brought new changes to the competitive structure of the industry. The Korean mobile communications industry makes an ideal case for analysis since it is an industry whose value is inherently dependent upon its user network. It is characterized by the typical increasing returns, in which a monopolizing player is enjoying firstmover's network effects. Because of the existence of network in the mobile communications industry, latecomers' disruptive innovations could not outcompete the incumbent's sustaining innovations. The contribution of this research lies in laying a groundwork for future studies by introducing a numerical simulation model to analyze the complexity theory and network effect.

  • 개방망은 망 접속을 표준화하여 망을 접근하도록 하는 technical interface의 공개측면과 망이 가지고 있는 망서비스를 공개하여 사용자로 하여금 선택적으로 이용할 수 있게 해주는 망서비스 공개 측면을 모두 고려하여 망구조를 실현해야 한다. 통신망은 망의 서비스 유형 및 일반적인 기능에 따라 음성급 전화망, 데이터망, 전용선망, 이동통신망 및 위성망으로 구분할 수 있으며, 이에 대한 망 접속은 각 망별로 또한 분류될 수 있다. 망서비스는 기술의 발전과 망진화에 따른 기술적인 요인, 고도통신 사업의 다양화에 다른 사업자 요구에 의한 요인, 그리고 시장수요 요인에 의해 계속 발전.진화되어지는 동적인 것이다. 개방망구조는 망서비스와 기술적인 접속을 주요 내용으로 하고 있기 때문에 이것도 역시 계속 진화되는 것으로 해석해야 한다. 본고에서는 개방망의 서비스 측면에서 해당교환 시스팀이나 전송시스팀이 제공가능한 서비스들로서 개방망구조의 서비스메뉴로 표현할 수 있는 것들을 각 망에 대해 자세히 파악하고자 한다. 이번 호에서는 그 첫번째 내용으로서 음성급 전화망에서 개방망서비스로서 국내 교환시스팀과 미국의 ONA 일환으로 BOC가 제공 가능한 것들을 소개한다. 음성급개방망서비스(Voice Grade Open Network Service)는 크게 가입자선측과 중계선측으로 분류 가능하다. 각 분류후에 1) 국내에서 제공가능한 서비스, 2) 여러 BOC가 공통적으로 보유한 서비스, 3) 특정 BOC가 보유한 서비스로 분류 정리하였다.

  • This paper corresponded to Smart-UAV(Smart Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technology development, a part of “The 21th Century New-Frontier Development Project” being propelled in accordance with enlarging the necessity of concentration development by selecting our strong technique being able to compete in the international society of knowledge based economy in the 21th century. Also, we designed Ku-band airborne video transceiver system performing to receive the TC(Tele-Command) signal needed to be applicable of Smart-UAV, and send the video and TM(Tele-Metry) signal at the same time. Moreover, we analyzed it in order to satisfy the system request of designed whole communication system, and established the validity on this paper going through by module simulation and manufacture of the whole system.

  • Recently, SDN technology is applied to real communication business, users are getting bigger, and as the amount of data flowing in the network increases, interest in network data flow management is increasing. During this process, it must be ensured that the confidentiality, integrity, availability, and traceability of the data on the network being transmitted. In addition, it is necessary to develop an environment for observing the flow of data in real time on a network required in various fields and visually confirming the control. In this paper, first, Mininet is applied to construct a network topology and various environment attributes. Second, we added OpenDayLight in Mininet environment to develop a simulation environment to visually check and control network traffic flow in network topology.

  • In the next generation mobile multimedia communications, the broad band shot-burst transmissions are used to reduce end-to-end transmission delay, and to limit the time variation of wireless channels over a burst. However, training overhead is very significant for such short burst formats. So, the availability of the short training sequence and the fast converging adaptive algorithm is essential in the system adopting the symbol-by-symbol adaptive equalizer. In this paper, we propose an adaptive equalizer using the DWMT (discrete multi-wavelet transform) and LMS (least mean square) adaptation. The proposed equalizer has a faster convergence rate than that of the existing transform-domain equalizers, while the increase of computational complexity is very small.

  • 승자독식(Winner Takes All)이라는 글로벌 경쟁원리로 인해 세계 주요 국가들 사이에 R&D 경쟁이 갈수록 치열해지고 있다. 이에 우리나라에서도 R&D 지원 확대 및 다양한 정책기획 활동 등이 전개되었다. 이러한 노력에도 불구하구 국가 차원에서 기획 및 정책조정이 효과적으로 추진되지 못하고 있으며, 국가연구개발사업 차원에서는 "기획의 양척 과다와 질적 부실"이라는 비판이 제기되고 있다. 반면에 기술 융복합화의 가속화 등 R&D 환경의 불확실성은 더욱 높아졌으며 국가연구개발사업의 규모 증가와 함께 연구기획의 복잡성은 더욱 더 높아졌다. 최근에는 국가 차원의 비전수립과 중장기 정책기획에 기초하여 사업기획과 과제기획을 연계 수행하는 등 기획을 통해 과제를 도출하는 하향식 접근이 강조되면서 기획의 중요성은 더욱 커졌다. 최근 연구기획의 새로운 기법으로서 정보분석 방법론(Information Analysis Method)이 대두되고 있다. 국가연구개발사업의 효율적 기획을 위하여 기존 기술기획 위원회(Peer Review) 방식 외에 정보분석 방법론을 통한 보완이 필요하다. 본고의 목적 크게 두 가지로 설명할 수 있다. 첫째, 현재 진행되고 있는 연구기획 및 연구기획 방법론으로 기장 많이 활용되고 있는 전문가 위원회의 한계를 제시하였다. 둘째, 최근 대두되고 있는 정보분석 방법론과 정보분석 시스템 구축, 그리고 이를 활용한 10대 기술(반도체, 디스플레이, 디지털 망원전파, 이동통신, BcN, 차세대 컴퓨팅, SW솔류션, 디지털콘텐츠, 임베디드 SW, 지식정보보안)에 대한 유망기술 발굴 실증분석을 실시하였다.

  • Recently, many difficulties have been faced in all parts of the world due to the impact of COVID-19. Personally, household income is decreasing sharply as many jobs disappear, and economically, many SMEs are increasingly going bankrupt. It is known that this phenomenon is highly likely to continue for the time being. In such a situation, the smart factory support project provides opportunities for difficult SMEs to improve productivity and change the corporate structure. In this study, the current status of smart factory promotion was examined, and problems occurring in the process of promoting smart factory support projects were identified. The improvement plans were derived so that more efficient projects could be promoted in the future.

  • This work describes an availability model of highly available systems to achieve Five-9's availability. Modern railway systems have raised users' expectations of powerful "always on" services. The crucial characteristics of these highly available services are essential to many modern businesses area, such as telecommunications, railway systems, information operations, Web-based businesses, and so on. The architecture-based model of system availability is useful to assess the feasibility of meeting a high availability target. The Markov model approach is straightforward for relative system engineers to adapt when they model highly available system failure and the failure recovery process. This work proposed the improved availability model through UML2.0. It is shown that the architecture-based model of system availability is a good reasonable by its application of the railway systems.

  • The SMART Highway project combines road construction with advanced technology and vehicle telecommunications. Its expected outcome is a world-leading intelligent road that is green, fast, and comfortable. A vehicular ad-hoc network(VANET) is the core technology of the SMART Highway, whose transport operation is based on road vehicles. The VANET is a next-generation networking technology that enables wireless communication between vehicles or between vehicles and a road side unit(RSU). In the VANET system, a vehicle accident is likely to cause a serious disaster. Therefore, some information on safety is essential to serve as the key exchange protocol for communication between vehicles. However, the key exchange scheme of the general network proposed for a fast-moving communication environment is unsuitable for vehicles. In this paper, communication between multiple vehicles more efficient and secure key exchange at the vehicle certification by signcryption is proposed.

  • This study attempts to identify how the value network of mobile industry has evolved in the value creating process. The longitudinal case study on SK Telecom was conducted by measuring the SK Telecom's investment structure during from 1999 to 2008. Results show that the convergence services based on the advanced mobile networks changed the revenue structure, and enabled SK Telecom to reposition as a media company. For the value creation, SK Telecom's value network has flexibly adapted to convergence environment through dynamic asset reconfiguration.
