  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the retention of the two denture adhesives with a silicone edentulous model and a resin denture base in vitro study. Material and methods: The experimental groups were used two denture adhesives and classified into 5 subgroups each. Subgroups were divided by the number of times the saliva sprayed. The control group was used synthetic saliva only. Dislodging tensile strengths were applied to the resin denture base using Instron in 3 directions ; vertical, lateral, and anterior-posterior. Results: The retention of two denture adhesives was increased significantly than saliva alone (P <.05). In each denture adhesives, the retention of saliva sprayed first was decreased than denture adhesive alone, but it didn't have significant differences. Whenever saliva sprayed repeated, the retention was decreased significantly than saliva sprayed first (P <.05). In each denture adhesives, vertical retentive force was highest than lateral and anterior-posterior retentive forces, and anterior-posterior retentive force was higher than lateral retentive force. This results were significantly different (P < .05). Significant differences of the retentive ability among two denture adhesives were not observed. Conclusion: From the results, use of the denture adhesives resulted in improved retentive ability of denture. Especially retentive force was highest in vertical direction.

  • Denture adhesive is the material using for enhancing retention and function of the denture. For a long time, denture adhesive was regarded as a repulsive material for dentist. However, it seems that the needs for using this is increasing. This study was planned to recognize the denture adhesive about kinds, components, and action mechanisms through literature review, and also evaluate its clinical effects and implications.

  • Denture adhesive is a material used to improve the retention and stability of the denture. And denture adhesive is divided into soluble and insoluble type. It improves the retention, stability of dentures, and masticatory functions of patients. Maintenance like cleansing and periodic follow up is essential. Almost of dental clinicians are only simply aware of the effects of denture adhesives and often rely on the manufacturer's instructions on precautions and maintenance. The purpose of this study is to examine the properties, effects, and precautions of denture adhesives, and to present clinical guidelines for patients and professionals.

  • Statements of the problem: Many denture wearers occasionally use denture adhesives to improve denture retention, stability and chewing efficiency. An ideal denture adhesive is nontoxic, non-irritating, and provides comfort to the oral mucosa. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and adhesive properties of a selected denture adhesive. Material and methods: To test cytotoxicity of the selected denture adhesive, mouse fibroblast cells were used in MTT testing. Cytotoxicity was examined according to the concentration of the denture adhesive and incubated for 1 to 4 days. To examine adhesive property, a denture base was fabricated on an edentulous dentiform. The adhesive was applied to the denture base, then tensile bond strength was measured, to evaluate the change in retention during 3 days. Results and Conclusion: 1. 1% and 2% concentration denture adhesive cream had no cytotoxicity. 2. The tensile bond strength of the group with both denture adhesive and artificial saliva was significantly higher than that of the group with only denture adhesive(P<.05). The tensile bond strength of the group with denture adhesive was significantly higher than that of with only artificial saliva(P<.05). 3. The tensile bond strength had no significant change during 1 hour, and then gradually decreased. After 1 day, it decrease to half. Within the limitation of this study, the tested denture adhesive had no cytotoxicilty and was effective in improving denture retention. The adhesive strength began to continuously decrease after 1 hour and it decreased to half at 1 day after application.

  • When oral cancer is occured, one may experience problems such as lip defect, necrosis of periodontal tissue and cervical caries caused by radiotherapy. According to ADI (Association of dental implantology), recent radiotherapy on jaw bone could be a relative contraindication of implant treatment. Due to this controversy, in most cases, treatment is done with removable dentures rather than implants. Especially, lip defect caused by an oral cancer operation have a serious repercussion on the retention of the denture. In this case report, patient with upper lip cancer had undergone resection primarily and secondary radiotherapy was done periodically. As a result, upper teeth of patient were extracted gradually and lower teeth showed very poor periodontal status. Therefore, Polident$^{(R)}$ denture adhesive cream (GlaxoSmithKline, London, England) was applied on maxillary complete denture to overcome reduced retention due to the lip defect and double crown RPD with friction pin was applied on the mandible successfully for two years.

  • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is concerned with promoting oral infection due to its low antibacterial activity. To overcome this, the nanoparticles of Ag-MSN, nGO, and CNP were mixed with MMA liquid in a weight ratio of 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0% compared to resin powder using Orthocryl from Dentarum, a calibration resin, and then instructed by the manufacturer. Accordingly, a specimen for calibration was prepared by mixing PMMA: MMA (1.2: 1) ratio, and physical properties of the calibration resin, antifungal experiments, and statistical analysis were performed. As a result of antibacterial experiments, the antibacterial properties of Ag-MSN increased. In nGO, the antibacterial adhesive effect increased hydrophilicity, not a change in surface roughness. The higher the CNP concentration, the higher the antibacterial activity. This suggests its potential usefulness as an antibacterial dental material for orthodontic devices and temporary restorations.
