Shear friction strength model of concrete was proposed to explain the direct friction mechanism at the concrete interfaces intersecting two structural elements. The model was derived from a mechanism analysis based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity considering the effect of transverse reinforcement and applied axial loads on the shear strength at concrete interfaces. Concrete was modelled as a rigid-perfectly plastic material obeying modified Coulomb failure criteria. To allow the influence of concrete type and maximum aggregate size on the effectiveness strength of concrete, the stress-strain models proposed by Yang et al. and Hordijk were employed in compression and tension, respectively. From the conversion of these stress-strain models into rigidly perfect materials, the effectiveness factor for compression, ratio of effective tensile strength to compressive strength and angle of concrete friction were then mathematically generalized. The proposed shear friction strength model was compared with 91 push-off specimens compiled from the available literature. Unlike the existing equations or code equations, the proposed model possessed an application of diversity against various parameters. As a result, the mean and standard deviation of the ratios between experiments and predictions using the present model are 0.95 and 0.15, respectively, indicating a better accuracy and less variation than the other equations, regardless of concrete type, the amount of transverse reinforcement, and the magnitude of applied axial stresses.

The concrete structural design provisions in Korea are based on ultimate strength design. Up to service load stage, it is assumed a linear stress-strain relation, but there is no stress-strain relationship for a concrete material from service load stage to limat state. According to the current provisions, an independent method is provided for the each calculation of deflection and crack width. In EC2 provisions based on limit state design, however, a stress-strain relationship of concrete is provided. Thereby, it is able to calculate a strength as well as a deflection directly from concrete stress-strain relationship. In this paper the moment-curvature relationship is directly calculated from a material law using equilibrium and compatibility conditions. Then strength and deflection are formulated. These results are compared with the values from the current provisions in Korea. From the results, the deflection based on a moment-curvature relationship is well agreed with experimental results and it is appeared that the deflection after the yielding of steel is also possible.

This paper describes the extension of the numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to monotonic in plane shear and introduced in the companion paper, to simulate effectively the behavior of RE structures under cyclic loadings. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress strain relation of concrete, which across the tension compression region, is defined. In addition, unlike previous simplified stress strain relations, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect we used. The modifications of the stress strain relation of steel are also introduced to reflect pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.

In this study, the mechanical performance of concrete exposed to chloride ion penetration was investigated. And a compressive stress-strain model was presented. CaCl2 solution was added when mixing concrete to simulate long-term chloride ion penetration, and the concentration of chlorine ions was set to 0, 1, 2, and 4 % based on the weight of the binder. To investigate the compressive stress-strain curve after the peak stress of concrete, the compressive strength was measured by displacement control. When the chlorine ion concentration was 1 %, peak stress increased, but when the chlorine ion concentration was 2 % or more, peak stress decreased. In the case of peak strain, no trend according to chloride ion concentration was observed at 7 days. At 28 days, peak strain decreased as the chloride ion concentration increased. A compressive stress-strain curve model based on the Popovics model was presented using changes in peak stress and peak strain at 28 days. Microstructure analyses were performed to investigate the cause of the decrease in mechanical performance as the concentration of chlorine ions increased. It was confirmed that as the concentration of chlorine ion increased, Friedel's salt increased and portlandite decreased.

This paper proposes ductile failure simulation under high strain rate conditions using finite element (FE) analyses. In order to simulate a cracked component under a high strain rate condition, this paper applies the stress-modified fracture strain model combined with the Johnson/Cook model. The stress-modified fracture strain model determines the incremental damage in terms of stress triaxiality (${\sigma}_m/{\sigma}_e$) and fracture strain (${\varepsilon}_f$) for a dimple fracture using the tensile test results. To validate the stress-modified fracture strain model under dynamic loading conditions, the parameters are calibrated using the tensile test results under various strain rates and the fracture toughness test results under quasi-static conditions. The calibrated damage model predicts the CT test results under a high strain rate. The simulated results were then compared with the experimental data.

When the rubber vulcanizates reinforced with carbon black or silica are subjected to cyclic loading from its virgin state, the stress required on reloading is less than that on the initial loading. This stress softening phenomenon is referred to as the Mullins effect. The strain energy function of rubber vulcanizates was investigated using theory of pseudo-elasticity incorporated damage parameter that Ogden and Roxburgh have proposed to describe the damage-induced stress softening effect in rubber-like solids. The quasi-static cyclic loading test was performed using the NR-SBR vulcanizates reinforced with carbon black, and then the effect of a damage parameter to stress-strain curve in reloading and subsequent reloading paths was studied. The strain energy function of the rubber vulcanizates with a different filler content was also evaluated.
Deformational characteristics of subbase materials are important parameters in the mechanistic design of pavement. The subbase materials are mostly unbound granular materials in Korea, and seven representative subbase materials were collected for testing from the pavement construction sites. To evaluate the deformational characteristics of subbase materials, RC/TS, TX and FF-RC tests were performed. The effects of various variables on modulus were studied. The variation in the modulus with number of loading cycles and loading frequency are very small and can be ignored in a practical sense. The modulus of subbase materials were significantly affected by confining pressure and strain level. The representative modulus reduction curve and constitutive models for Korean subbase materials were suggested.
Wear mechanisms may be briefly classified by mechanical, chemical and thermal wear. A plane strain finite element method is used with a new material stress and temperature fields to simulate orthogonal machining with continuous chip formation. Deformation of the workpiece material is healed as elastic-viscoplastic with isotropic strain hardening and the numerical solution accounts for coupling between plastic deformation and the temperature field, including treatment of temperature-dependent material properties. Effect of the uncertainty in the constitutive model on the distributions of strait stress and temperature around the shear zone are presented, and the model is validated by comparing average values of the predicted stress, strain, and temperature at the shear zone with experimental results.

Confined concrete has enhanced strength and ductility compared with unconfined strength. Cause of these merits of confined concrete, many researches have been performed for confining effects of concrete and been studied in many fields. Although many researches about concrete confined by FRP sheets have been studied recently, it is difficult to apply concrete confined by FRP in real structures because FRP is a brittle material. In this study, the enhanced strength and ductility of concrete which is confined by steel tubes or steel plates were investigated. Fifty one specimens were tested and each specimen has different confining condition. Test results showed enhanced ductility and strength of confined concrete and concrete models were suggested under various confining conditions by regression of experimental data.
