  • To examine the residual stress field resulting from stamping process for the lower control arm of a car, the explicit finite element analysis is performed for the stamping process by way of the ABAQUS Explicit. The residual stress is obtained in terms of the Von Mises stress and other parameters such as equivalent plastic strain, the change of blank thickness, the final configuration of the blank and the spring back effect are also considered. Moreover, discussed is the convergence of the explicit FEM versus the punch sped and the element discretization

  • Southeastern Korean Peninsula has undergone the polyphase deformations according to the changes of regional tectonic settings during the Cenozoic. Through analyses of more than 600 fault-slip data gathered in the study area, five tectonic events are revealed as the followings: (I) NW-SE transtension, (II) NW-SE transpression, (III) NE-SW pure or radial extension, (IV) NNE-SSW transpression, (V) NE or ENE-WSW transpression. Event I was induced by the pull-apart type extension of the East Sea during 24-16 Ma, which resulted in the NW-SE extension of the Tertiary Basins in SE Korea. Event II was resulted from the collision of SW Japan and Izu-Bonnin Arc (or Kuroshio Paleoland) on the Philippine Sea Plate at ${\sim}$ 15 Ma, which stopped the extension of the Tertiary Basins and originated the uplift of fault blocks in and around SE Korean Peninsula. It was continued until ${\sim}$ 10 Ma. Event III is interpreted as the post-tectonic event after the block-uplifts due to the event II, which indicates a temporal lull in activity of the Philippine Sea Plate since 10 Ma. Event IV was originated from the resumption in activity of the Philippine Sea Plate which was restarted to move toward north at ${\sim}$ 6 Ma. The event made the EW compressional structures behind SW Japan as well as in the Korea Straits, and thus the block-uplifts in SE Korea was resumed again. Lastly, event V was resulted from the gradual decrease in influence of the Philippine Sea Plate and the cooperative compression due to the subduction of the Pacific Sea Plate and the collision of the Indian Plate since 5-3.5 Ma, which generated the NS compressional structures in the offshore along the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula and thrust up the fault-blocks toward west. This event is continuing so far, and thus is making the active faultings resulting in the present earthquakes of the Korean Peninsula.

  • This study has conducted to develop new gabion wall systems with vegetation base materials for stream bank stability and rapid rehabilitation. Vegetation base materials are primarily compounded with fine soil, organic composts and peat moss as plant fibers, a water retainer and a soil improver. Normally gabion wall systems resist the lateral earth pressures or stream power by their own weight. Therefore, fill material must have suitable weight, compressive strength and durability to resist the loading, as well as the effects of water and weathering. In this project, 100 to 200-mm clean, hard stones are basically specified, and about 50-mm rubbles are also used. Test application of new gabion wall system carried out in the stream bank of a small stream in the Gwangreung experimental forest, belonging to Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in December 16th, 2006. As a result of the analysis of hydraulic stability of new gabion wall system, gabion wall system has highest threshold shear stress when the gabion wall covered by vegetation. New gabion wall system is highly resistant to sliding and overturning because safety coefficients exceed 1.5. As a result of term of slope stability analysis of new gabion wall system by Bishop and Fellenius methods, stability of stream bank was highly increased after the construction of gabion wall. Therefore, new gabion wall system is effective to stabilize unstable stream bank.

  • High temperature plasma coating technology has been applied to recover damaged aluminum dies from wear by spraying pure aluminum and alumina powder. However, the coated mixed powder layer composed of aluminum and alumina often undergoes a detachment from the substrate, making the coated substrate die unable to maintain its expected life span. In this study, in order to increase the bonding strength between the substrate and the coating layer, a pure aluminum layer was applied as an intermediate bond layer. In order to prepare the specimen with variable bond coating conditions, the bond coat layers with a various gun speed from 10 cm/sec to 30 cm/sec were prepared with coating cycle variations ranging from three to nine cycles. The specimen with a bond coat layer coated with a gun speed of 20 cm/sec and three coating cycles exhibited ~13MPa of adhesion strength, while the specimen without a bond coat layer showed ~6 MPa of adhesion strength. The adhesion strength with a variation of bond coat layer thickness is discussed in terms of coating parameters.

  • Ideal rotator cuff repair is to maintain high fixation strength and minimize gap formation for optimizing the environment of biologic healing of tendon to bone. Among the current repair techniques, the suture bridge technique is superior to single- or double-row repair in ultimate load to failure, gap formation, restoring anatomical footprint and achieving pressurized contact area. The suture bridge technique also minimizes gap formation and has rotational and torsional resistances allowing early rehabilitation. However, despite superior biomechanical characteristics of the suture bridge technique, there is no evidence that these mechanical advantages result in better clinical outcomes. Furthermore, there is no difference in failure rates between the double-row repair and suture bridge techniques. An appropriate repair technique should be determined based on tear size and pattern and tendon quality.

  • This research was planned to evaluate the structural performance of post tensioned(PT) concrete member subjected to fire. Prime objective was to suggest some techniques to evaluate the performance of post tensioned concrete beam and slab exposed to high temperature through experiment. To accomplish this objective, the following two scopes have been proceeded to verify the strength reducing ratio of strands and find out the difference of resisting force at the PT concrete members exposed to high temperature through the fire test. The properties of prestressing steel(tendon) in PT concrete beam and slab under variable temperatures were reviewed. The test of this study was shown that stress relaxation occurred at high temperature, and some restoration of tensional force appeared as it got cooling down. The residual tension of the post tensioned beams at 4 hours after reaching the target temperature were 70% at $400^{\circ}C$, 10% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 2% at $800^{\circ}C$. The post tensioned slabs were 94% at $400^{\circ}C$, 84.5% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 62% at $800^{\circ}C$. The reason why the residual tension loss of the post tensioned slab was relatively small was considered to be that the slab was exposed just one side to high temperature and the strength of the strand was restored larger than that of beam. Also, it was confirmed that the post tensioned member inevitably experienced the loss of strength by fire damage, and restoration design of the member should be required to compensate for the value as much as lost strength.

  • In this study, to develop the lattice materials with a low environmental load for restoring the destroyed forest, 7 types of wood-concrete hybrid laminated materials were manufactured with domestic four softwoods, three hardwoods and concrete, and the effects of density of wood species on static bending strength performances were investigated. Bending MOEs of wood-concrete hybrid laminated materials increased with increasing density of wood species on the whole, and the values were higher than that of concrete by hybrid-laminating woods on the concrete. It was found that the measure values of bending MOEs were slightly lower than the calculated values calculated using equivalent cross-section method from MOE of each laminae of hybrid laminated materials and the difference between them was less than 10%. Bending proportional limit stresses of hybrid laminated materials showed 1.2-1.6 times higher than that of concrete by hybrid-laminating. Bending strength (MOR) of hybrid laminated materials increased with the density of wood species. By hybrid-laminating, the MOR of concrete was considerably increased. Therefore, it is considered that wood-concrete hybrid laminated materials can be applied as a materials with a low environmental load and durability for ecological restoration.

  • To interpret the movement historv of the Yangsan fault, the paleostresses were analyzed from about 1,000 striated small faults and 330 extension joints which were measured from 37 sites near and along the strike of the Yangsan fault from Yangsan-si, Kyeongsangnam-do to the Shinkwang-myeon, Kyeongsangbuk-do. Six sequential tectonic events have boen established as followings: (I) NW-SE extension, (Il) ENE-WSW compression and NNW-SSE extension, (III) NW-SE compression, (W) ENE-WSW extension, (V) E-W comoression and N-S extension, and (VI) NNE-SSW compression and(VI) NNE-SSWextension. The movement history of the Yangsan fault rnrning in NNE direction were inteepreted based on these six sequential stress fields. The initial feature of the Yangsan fault was formed at the first stage with the development of extension fractures by tectonic event (I) of NW-SE extension. The fault was acted continuously with a right-1ateral strike-slip movement by tectonic event( II) closely related to event( I). The movements had been continued until the Late Miocene. This age was the most active period in faulting. The left-lateral strike-slip movement was followed by subsequent tectonic events (ffi) and (IV). The activity of the Yangsan fault was suspended temporarily by compression of tectonic event (V) which was perpendicular to the strike of the fault. This period might be very short and the magnitude of the tectonic was also small. In the last stage, the fault acted with slight extension or right-lateral moveenent by tectonic event (VI).

  • LRU (Line Replacement Unit) modifications are often required for military aircraft due to aging. Recently, LRU modifications were proceeded for KA-O (Armed Airborne Controller) by replacing the ejection seat and adding avionic equipment, which made the aircraft's operational CG (Center of Gravity) on fuel consumption curve become out of the range of the specification requested. The off-ranged CG should be corrected by introducing an appropriate method. This study proposes a procedure for revising and verifying the empty weight CG altered due to LRU modification for small military aircraft (e.g., KA-O). In the proposed method, first, the change of empty weight CG of KA-O due to the LRU modifications is comprehensively examined. Then, several ballast masses are added to the engine mount strut to restore the empty weight CG on the fuel consumption curve to a safe operational range. The installations are verified via stress and fatigue analysis for various operating conditions. Considering that open information is not very available for the revision of empty weight CG, this study is valuable because it presents an established procedure for correcting and verifying empty weight CG during aircraft modification.

  • Shape memory alloys (SMA) are often used in smart structures as active components. Their ability to provide large recovery forces and displacements has been useful in many applications, including devices for artificial muscles, active structural acoustic control, and shape control. Based on the 3-dimensional SMA constitutive equation in this paper, the radial displacement control of externally pressurized circular and semicircular composite cylinders under external pressure with a thin SMA layer bonded on its inner surface or inserted between composite layers in investigated using 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Upon actuation through resistive heating, SMAs start to transform from martensitic into austenitic state, simultaneously recover the prestrain, and thus cause the composite cylinders to go back to their original shapes of the cylinder cross-sections.
